STAIRCASE PRESSURISATION CALCULATION

Design Requirement
a. Outward air flow velocity from staircase of not less than 1 m/s across 2 doors leading from any 2 successive storey and also that at the
ground floor when all the 3 doors are fully opened
b. The pressure differential between the staircase and the office area is within the range form 25 Pa to 50 Pa (about 2.5mm to 5 mm WG).
c. The force required to open any door at the door handle shall not exceed 110N
d. The condition in above a) and b) will be restored within 15 seconds after each disturbance by the operation of the door

Design Calculation
1) Estimation of air volume flowing past door when 3 doors are opened
a) Size of door is 0.00 m(H) x 0.00 m (W) Staircase serves 10 storeys in total
b) Area of door is 0.00 m2 ( 1.00 -leaf door) Simultaneous doors 3 open doors
c) Based on 1m/s, airflow through door when door is opened:
= 0 m2 x 1 m/s x 60 sec x 60 min
= 0 cmh per door
For opened doors, the air quantity is = 0 cmh or 0 l/s

2) Estimation of air leakage through doors when doors are closed

a) Design criteria based on BS 5588:Part 4:1978
b) Leakage Are Calculation:
Based on 50 Pa pressure difference and interpolate of data from Table 3.
From Table 3
Crack
Length Leakage
Type of door Size (m) Area (m)
2m (H)
Case A Single-leaf in rebated frame opening into a presurisation space 0.8m(W) 5.6 0.01
2m (H)
Case B Single-leaf in rebated frame opening outwards from a presurisation space 0.8m(W) 5.6 0.02
2m (H)
Case C Double leaf with or without centre rebate 1.6m(W) 9.2 0.03
Selection: Case B

I) From Case B, the leakage area per crack length = 0.02 m2 / 5.6 m = 0.003571 m
The door used has a crack length of 0 m. Therefore, the leakage area = 0m x 0.003571 m = 0 m2

c) Calculation of air leaks through doors:

Refer to Eqn 2 of sub-section 5.3.1.1
Qe = 0.827 x Ae x (Pe)^0.5

where,
Qe = The air supply to the pressurised space (m3/s)
Ae = The total effective area of the leakage paths out of the space (m2)
Pe = The pressurisation level of the pressurised space (Pa)

i) (Case A) Qe = 0.827 x 0 x 50 0.5 = 0.000 m3/s = 0 cmh

The leakage for 7 nos. of doors = 0.0 x 7 = 0 cmh

Therefore, the total door air leakage = = 0 cmh or 0 l/s

3) Estimation of air leakage through stair shaft & unknown points
BS 5588:Part 4:1978 recommends that 25% leakage is allowed for stair shaft leakage and unknown leakage
Stair Shaft Leakage = 0 cmh or 0 l/s

4) Required Fan Airflow = 0 cmh

a) The fan airflow required = door airflow + Door Leakage + Shaft leakage
= 0 + 0 + 0
0 cmh
SF 10% 0
TOTAL AIRFLOW = 0 cmh or 0 l/s
