ABSTRACT
Riskawati. 2019. Figurative Languages in Robert Frost’s Selected Poems. A
thesis. of English Department, Faculty of Languages and Literature, State
University of Makassar, (Supervised by Abdullah and Sultan).

This research aimed to analyze the figurative languages in Robert Frost’s


selected poems “Choose Something Like A Star” and “My Butterfly”. This thesis is
focused on the figurative language and message on Robert Frost’s selected poems.
This research used pure structuralism as approach to know the figurative languages
and messages in Robert Frost’s selected poems which is pure structuralism is
approach that focus on analyze the intrinsic elements of literary work. The research
used qualitative descriptive method so, the data were presented without calculations
or numbers but with descriptions or explanations.The result of this research showed
that in “Choose Something Like A Star” were found five types of figurative
languages they were Personification, Irony, simile, hyperbole, and metonymy, while
in “My Butterfly “ were found four types of figurative languages they were
personification, hyperbole, irony and metonymy. The message contained in the poem
"Choose Something Like a Star" is that as human beings we must always evaluate
ourselves whether the life we live right or wrong, we must learn about right living,
we must be careful in choosing the path in life we are so that we can live peacefully
and happily. While the message contained in “My Butterfly” poem is as a human
being, we must always be aware that there is a substance greater than us, namely
God, we must not be complacent with the strength or wealth we have so that we make
mistakes or sins, we do whatever we want to do because we feel that we are the
strongest and have everything. we must always remember that everything we have in
the world belongs to God, even we also will die and return to Him.

Firstly, the researcher would like to say thank to Allah Subhana Wata’ala for

all His blessing and mercies and health so finally the researcher can finish this thesis.

Sholawat and salam always give to our noble prophet Muhammad Sallallahualaihi

wasallam, who has brought as from the darkness to the lightness.

This undergraduate thesis entitled Figurative Languages in Robert Frost’s

Selected Poems is submitted as the final requirement in accomplishing undergraduate

degree at English Department Faculty of Languages and Literature, State University

of Makassar.

In arranging this thesis, a lot of people have helped by giving motivation,

support and advice for the researcher. In this valuable chance the researcher intended

to express his gratitude and appreciation to all of them. First, the researcher special

appreciation goes to her mother Suriani and her father Kunu for their love, support,

pray and also their time for always remind her to keep spirit, and never give up.
