raises questions for media
The death of TV broadcaster Greg Boyed
last week sparked a flood of tributes in
the media and many anguished articles
on the scourge of suicide and depression.
The media have been warned that intense
coverage can be counter-productive
and restraint is required. How did they
respond when one of their own was
involved?
“Why couldn't the reportage be straight
to the point?” TVNZ news presenter Peter
Williams asked in the Bay of Plenty Times
this weekend.
He was lamenting the media
convention that suspected self-
inflicted deaths should not be
reported as suicide without the
confirmation of a coroner.
He said it was because “according
to some in management . . . there
is no need to report an incident
which might inspire copycat
behaviour.”
In fact reporting guidelines
developed by the Ministry of
Health were agreed after extensive
and prolonged consultation with
the news media.
The guidelines also say media
should not report the method of death
or speculate on the cause. They should
not romanticise, rationalise or normalise
suicide.
Another key principle is that reports of
individual instances should not be unduly
prominent in the media.
“Surely it would help if we addressed the
issue face on,” said Peter Williams.
“You never know, expressing its raw
starkness might prevent someone else

doing the same thing,” he said.
The fact that we don't know how people
respond to visceral front-and-centre
coverage is part of the problem.
The TVNZ veteran is not the only
journalist who resents reporting
restrictions and has claimed the media
are prevented from reporting the issue
fully. But these days, there are more
media reports about suicide than ever
before - and they can have a wider reach
than ever before.
“Greg’s death had become
part of the insatiable news
cycle. Journalists, paralysed
by their own grief and
confusion, did what seemed
most obvious: delivering more
content. Soon, the internet
was saturated with tweets
and opinion pieces, mostly
written by pundits and former
TV stars.”

Unlocking South
Island Trade potential
to India launched
The New Zealand India Trade Alliance
(NZITA) has launched a South Island
chapter to create a gateway for
companies in the South to connect with
the huge opportunities emerging in the
Indian market.
An event, Unlocking the Potential of
India, in Christchurch last Thursday was
attended by around 60 representatives
from companies looking to expand
business opportunities in the enormous,
but complex, Indian market. The event
provided an insight into trading with
India, and the role of the NZITA in
unlocking the often-bewildering Indian
opportunity.

terms, it was doing this while keeping
inflation close to the central bank’s 4%
target and gradually reducing federal
government debt relative to the size of
the economy.

Keeping Safe when out and about

Unfortunately the lack of vigilance by
some people has meant that they have
been subject to incidents of victimization
by criminals actively looking for tempting
and easy opportunities.
We all want to live in a safe community,
however there are times when our own
actions can make a difference to how
other people perceive us. Being vigilant
and attentive to your surroundings
including other people can greatly
improve your safety when out and about.
The following advice can greatly improve
your safety when out in your community
Walking alone at night
• Where possible, always keep to well-lit
areas.
• Keep bags containing valuables, wallets,
purses close to your body.
• Keep you cell phone where you can
reach it.
• Walk close to the gutter, not beside shop
doorways.
• Walk facing traffic
If you think someone is following you
• Keep looking ahead and walk briskly.
• Cross the road and see if they follow.
• If they do, go to the nearest place where
there are people.

Diwali is around-Chalk it up for

Auckland Diwali Festival
Colourful chalk Rangoli designs will cover
the ground outside Ellen Melville Centre
before the Auckland Diwali Festival – and
one of them will secure a $500 cash prize
for its creator.
Ellen Melville Centre and festival
organisers are presenting a programme of
Diwali-themed festivities the day before
the festival, including a Rangoli-drawing
competition open to amateur, student
and professional artists.
Registrations are now open for artists
keen to secure one of the limited
pavement spaces for the Friday, 19
October competition.
Rangoli is an Indian folk-art form, where
designs are drawn onto the ground,
traditionally using coloured powders and
embellished with sand, rice, candles or
flower petals. The designs can be simple
geometric shapes, depict deities or
flowers or they can be more elaborate.
For this competition, the designs will
solely be created with chalk (the only
medium permitted).
Competition entrants will get 20 jumbo
sticks of coloured chalk, a 1.5m² patch
of ground and three hours, from 9am-
midday, to complete their designs.
The works will be judged on their
balance of traditional design and
modern influences, alignment to
the Diwali Festival themes of lights,
family, celebration, colour, and their
representation of the relationship
between New Zealand and the Indian
diaspora. The winners will be announced
at 1pm on the day.
Festival producer Leilana Meredith says
the team wants to hear from anyone with
experience of creating Rangoli or similar
arts forms.
“Whether you do this as a family tradition
or a hobby, you’re an art or design
student, or you make a living from art
and design, we’d love you to help us bring
a burst of Rangoli colour to the heart of
the central city. But spaces are limited, so

to listen to one of the finest orators on
spirituality worldwide, Sister Shivani of
Brahma Kumari who came visiting New
Zealand for the benefit of seekers. Sister

an evening of enlightenment, meditation

Inland Revenue on downward trend

The number of people threatening self-
harm in phone calls to Inland Revenue
(IR) has trended down consistently over
the last three years, says IR’s deputy
commissioner, corporate integrity and
assurance, Mary Craig.
“There are still too many, but this is
an encouraging trend that we hope
continues,” Ms Craig said.In the calendar
year 2016 there were 334 threats of
self-harm in calls; down to 306 in 2017;
and 182 to 28 August this year. Of those
approximately half were reported to
Police.
“Our staff have been encouraged to take
a consistent approach to these difficult
calls that aims to help rather than
exacerbate each situation,” she said.
But a key to avoiding these situations can
be for people to engage early with IR so
that we can help them avoid getting to
the point of desperation with debt,” Ms
Craig said. “We can and do help people
resolve difficult situations all the time.
“The most important thing is that they
don’t need to lose hope because there are
options we can discuss with them.”

eighth day of the month of Bhadra, as per

Lord Krishna is believed to be born some
5000 years back, as the eighth incarnation
of Lord Vishnu. The earliest mention of
Lord Krishna can be found in the epic of
Mahabharata.
The eighth son to Devaki and Vasudeva
of the Yadava clan, Krishna’s birth was
not welcomed by his uncle Kansa. Kansa
had his reasons – the great sage Narada
told Kansa that he would die in the hands
Krishna. So, Krishna’s father, Vasudeva,
took him to Gokul, where he grew up with
foster parents Nanda and Yashoda.
According to mythological stories,
Krishna overthrew the tyrant King Kansa
later after dodging several assassination
attempts by him.
In one of the paragraphs of the Bhagavad
Gita, Krishna says that whenever there
is be a predominance of evil and decline
of religion, he will reincarnate to destroy
the evil and let the good take over. The

the lead and collecting funds to
be channelled to the Kerala Chief
Ministers Disaster Relief Fund. We
have created a “ give a little “ page for
the fund collection. Similar to us, the

is collecting funds on behalf of us.
The other Indian Diaspora is chipping
in too. We are offered help by the NZ
business community as well.” Said

CRIMINAL JUSTICE Summit should be for
everyone – not just criminals
This week the Government held its
Criminal Justice Summit. According to
Justice Minister Andrew Little, having a
good mix of experienced experts who also
bring valuable cultural context show’s that
this Government is smart on crime.
The problem is, he hasn’t got the right
mix. He’s gathered together a room full
of people who support his view that we
should soften up our bail, parole and
sentencing laws to make it easier for
criminals to get out of prison early and
harder for them to get sent there in the
first place.
On top of a group of people who support
his soft on crime view, Mr Little has said
that the stories of victims shouldn’t be
told in the media while the summit is
happening. He says this is too emotive. He
doesn’t want those who have been burgled,
robbed or assaulted to be heard.
The problem with that is that both
Andrew Little and the Prime Minister
have done a two-day media blitz talking
about the rights of criminals. Mr Little
used the example of a 21-year-old man
who attacked his ex-girlfriend’s car with
a sledgehammer. He said the accused
‘apparently wasn’t threatening the young
woman’ and that he was ‘obviously
provoked’. He doesn’t think this man’s
actions warrant him being in custody.
So, while it’s fine for Mr Little and Jacinda
Ardern to go to the media with the
agenda that suits them, they don’t want
the victims of crime to have a voice. It’s
hypocrisy at its worst, with a dangerous
agenda behind it.

massive costs on to business, not the least
of which is a 27 per cent increase in the
minimum wage in the next three years.
Everyone wants Kiwis to earn more, but
an export business only survives if it is
internationally competitive.
Putting up labour costs with that speed
is not going to help increase our exports
– some will manage, others simply won’t.
Nor will reduced foreign investment
and attacks on oil and gas, dairy, export
education – some of our biggest export
earners – help those sectors grow.
This government has sown uncertainty,
pushed costs on to business and brought
in specific anti-growth policies.
Most businesses in New Zealand are
small and they struggle to survive, against
relentless competition here and overseas.
They worry about a government coming
along at putting the minimum wage up 27
per cent in three years. They worry about
tax uncertainty. They worry about finding
staff and keeping them.

received by the Governor on her arrival.
The Defence Minister extended her warm
greetings to Malik on his appointment as
the state governor, an official statement
read.
The two also discussed several important
inter-related issues concerning the
effective management of internal
and external security, particularly in
the context of increasing attempts at
infiltration and the ongoing anti-terrorist
operations.
Sitharaman and Malik also held
detailed discussions on the urban local
bodies and panchayat elections, which
will be conducted in the months of

10, breathed his last at 8.15 am today.
He had a cardiac arrest, according to the
doctors.
One of the longest-serving
parliamentarians in India, Chatterjee was
suffering from a kidney ailment and was
put on ventilator support on Saturday. He
suffered a haemorrhagic stroke in July.

BIMSTEC members call for
seamless connectivity, poverty eradication
The member states of the Bay of Bengal
Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical
and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC)
have agreed for establishing seamless
connectivity within the region and
committed to work for the eradication of
poverty by 2030.
As per the Kathmandu Declaration,
the BIMSTEC countries reiterated their
resolve to establish seamless multi-modal
transportation linkages and smooth,
synchronised and simplified transit
facilities through the development,
expansion and modernization of
highways, railways, waterways, sea
routes, airways in the region and direct
respective authorities to speed up their
efforts to conclude the BIMSTEC Coastal
Shipping Agreement and the BIMSTEC
Motor Vehicle Agreement as early as
possible, taking into account the special
circumstances and needs of the member
countries.
The member countries were satisfied
with the preparation of the draft
BIMSTEC Master Plan on Transport
Connectivity and called for its early
adoption and thanked the Asian
Development Bank for providing support
to prepare the Master Plan and task

Americans pay tributes to the man who
could have been US President, twice
A
mericans, including many former Presidents paid rich tributes to late
Senator and two times Republican Presidential candidate John McCain,
who died last week of brain cancer, he was 81. McCain, who remained a
senator for six terms, was literally prevented from getting elected the President
twice, first by the Republican George W Bush and then by the Democrat
candidate Barak Obama, both the former Presidents very generously praised
and commended McCain for his contribution in American politics and his
role in shaping American policies for the betterment of the country, during his
memorial service.
American politics is way different from the politics of rest of the world and is
way too different from Indian politics, where even in the death of a politician,
the party in opposition or in power, don’t miss a chance to take political
advantage. But as mentioned earlier, America is quite different from rest of
the world and despite any ideological difference, the salutation and accolades
will come even from the staunchest critics to a deserving person, because
Americans put their national interest first. John was an honourable person
who always detested abuse of power and believed that his opposition is equally
honest, patriotic and human as him. He graduated from US Naval Academy
to join American Navy and rose to the rank of Captain. He fought for America
during Vietnam war as naval aviation pilot. He pent few years as a war prisoner
in Vietnam, before returning to his country and joining politics later. If he was
elected in 2008 as US President, he would have been the oldest person to be
elected for the Oval office in the history of America.
McCain supported Iraq war but was very critical of then Défense Minister
Donald Rumsfeld and the Pentagon for keeping a low troop presence there.
He similarly supported the 2007 surge of more than 20,000 troops, which
increased security in Iraq. McCain also publicly supported President Bush’s bid
for re-election, even though he differed with Bush on several issues including
torture, pork barrel spending, illegal immigration, a constitutional amendment
to ban same-sex marriage and global warming. He also defended the Vietnam
War record of Bush’s opponent, Senator John Kerry, who came under attack
during the campaign. Both in the House and the Senate, McCain earned a
reputation as a conservative politician who nonetheless was not afraid to
question the ruling Republican orthodoxy. In 1983, for example, he called for
the withdrawal of U.S. Marines from Lebanon, and he also publicly criticized
the administration’s handling of the Iran-Contra affair.
He has worked diligently in support of increased tobacco legislation and
especially the reform of the campaign finance system, professing some more
liberal views and generally proving to be more complex than merely a straight-
ahead conservative. In July of 2017, McCain was diagnosed with brain cancer,
forcing him to step back from his role in the Senate. But he still made a critical
and controversial vote in July 2017 to repeal the Affordable Care Act after giving
an emboldened speech criticizing the Senate health care bill.
In his death as well, John McCain showed the same resilience which he did all
his life by ending his cancer treatment resulting in his demise the following
day. America is going to remember one of its brave hearts for a very long time
to come as a law maker par excellence setting a precedence for the future
generations.

The Significance of the Chariot with
Krishna and Arjuna
Krishna Janamashtami is observed as the birth day of the 8th Avatar of Lord Vishnu,
on the 8th day of the dark half Hindu month of Shraavana, normally falls between
mid August and mid September, when the Moon is in Rohini Nakshatra. Krishna is
famous for many things, one of the most well known is Bhagavad Gita, which is the
conversation between Krishna and Arjuna before the great Battle of Kurukshetra and
is considered as a philosophical and literary classic of all times.
Refer to Geeta Upadesam picture. There is a chariot between the two armies in the
battle field of Kurukshetra. Arjuna (passenger) is seated at the back. Lord Krishna
(charioteer) is driving the chariot. HE is holding the reins, which are controlling
the horses that are leading the chariot. Collectively this composes one full picture
of the chariot. But what does this all signify? This picture is symbolic of our inner
instruments to train the mind and senses. Here is a very concise and full of meaning
description:
1. Chariot: Sarira (physical body), the instrument through which the Self, intellect,
mind, and senses operate.
2. Charioteer: Atma (Self, sometimes referred as Higher Intellect or Buddhi), leading
the chariot, supposed to be the wise giver of instructions to the mind.
3. Passenger: Jivi (Individual Soul, the embodied Atma), always the neutral witness.
4. Horses: Indriyas (Senses), (eyes-vision, ears-hearing, nose-smell, tongue-taste, skin-
touch), through which we relate to the external world by perception and action.
5. Reins: Manas (Mind), through which the senses receive their instructions to act and
perceive.
6. Roads: The countless objects of the senses in the world and our memory

8. Destination: “Perfection” or “Self Realization”
9. Kurukshetra Battlefield: Inner battlefield of mind, the only place where one can
confront and vanquish the Inner Demons.
10. Two Armies: Kauravas (Demonic nature) and Pandavas (Divine nature)
11. Who's driving your chariot? Mostly we don’t let the charioteer on duty. The reins
(mind) are flapping around freely without the proper inner guidance and not giving
instruction to the horses (senses). Hence, they wander freely down any road they feel
like in response to their past memories (Chitta). The chariot (body) takes a beating, the
horses (senses) get tired, the reins (mind)) get worn, and the charioteer (Intelligence)
gets lazy. The passenger is completely ignored.
12. Put the charioteer back on the job: Retrain the charioteer (Intelligence) to pick up
the reins (mind) and start giving some positive direction to the horses (senses). This
training is called Sadhana (spiritual practice).
13. Allow the charioteer to serve the passenger: When the charioteer (Intelligence)
becomes more stabilized in being back on the job, there is an ever increasing
awareness of the fact the entire purpose of the chariot, horses, reins, and charioteer,
are to serve as instruments for the passenger, the true Self.
The Mahabharata is still going on within us, the fight between our demonic and divine
qualities. In this conflict, Krishna (Self, Atma, Higher Intellect) is ever on the side
of Dharma (Righteousness). If you seek to have the Lord on your side as your guide,
equip yourself with the divine nature, the qualities of Dharma. This chariot is to be
driven right to the Destination (Perfection, Self Realization). Horses may dash down
the chariot into a ditch if they are restive, tired, unwilling, and cannot see the road
properly. We can invoke Divine Guidance in us as our personal Charioteer to assist
us throughout every battle we must fight with Inner Demons.
“Don’t drive the car with your foot on the brake but use the brakes to control the car when
necessary. Must exercise control when there is some danger, such as impure thoughts,
impure feelings, impure sights, impure hearing. If you don’t have any brakes at all you will
surely come to grief. Horses which cannot be brought under control without reins, a car
without brakes, a person without sense control, are all extremely dangerous and heading
for disaster.”

Post-study work rights for international students in NZ

Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway
recently announced some changes to the
post-study work rights which will not only
boost New Zealand’s economy but also
reduce student exploitation and promote
our reginal education offerings.
These new immigration settings will
better match the skills that people study
in New Zealand with the skills that Kiwi
employers need to grow their businesses.
They are also expected to attract
international students studying at higher
levels of study and those who undertake
high quality sub-degree courses that are
needed in our growing economy.
The new changes provide time-limited
incentives for students to study and
work in the regions. This boosts regional
education providers and support the
initiatives to lift regional investment and
productivity. These changes will be in
effect from 26 November 2018.
Employer-assisted post-study work
rights at all levels will be removed and
this will help reduce the risk of migrant
exploitation and better protect New
Zealand’s international reputation. We
offer quality not quantity and our changes
are introduced to boost New Zealand as
a preferred destination for international
students and to match up positively with
our key comparator nations.
International students can be vulnerable
for exploitation because of financial
pressures, lack of awareness of
employment rights, reluctance to report
exploitation (as there may be immigration
consequences) and the need to secure
employment to facilitate pathways to
residence. Removing the employer-
assisted post-study visa will reduce the
risk of exploitation.
Main changes made to the post-
study work rights are:

Man deported for not telling immigration

He and his wife were granted residence
in 2007 to join their two children in New
Zealand and he said they split up after
he told her about the child's paternity in
2011.
He returned to see Ms Xu and their child
nine times between 2008 and 2015 and
they registered their marriage in 2014.
It was after their daughter applied
for residence as his child that he was
served with a deportation notice for not
informing Immigration New Zealand he
had another child.
The agency said it would have
investigated his first marriage more if it
had known of the extramarital child.
His lawyer argued sperm donors were not
parents under legislation in New Zealand.
The tribunal said he knew of DNA results
before his residence application was
finalised, although he did not intend to
defraud immigration authorities.
"The Tribunal has sympathy for the
appellant, an otherwise law-abiding
person, whose natural wish was and
is to live in New Zealand with his two
New Zealand-based children and their
families.
"However, the appellant was obliged
to inform Immigration New Zealand
of any relevant fact or any change of
circumstance that might have affected
the decision on his residence application,
and nevertheless he did not advise
Immigration New Zealand of the DNA
analysis results which showed that he
was genetically related to a child not
declared in his application, and of his
intention to add [her] to his household
registration in China.
"As a result, the appellant deprived
Immigration New Zealand of the
opportunity to undertake a full
assessment of his application and make a
decision based on his real circumstances."
It upheld his deportation, but removed
the usual period of prohibition on entry
to New Zealand so that he could apply to

A Punjabi mother’s determination to
overcome her depression leads to her
helping other migrant women.
Born in India, Baljit Dheil migrated to
New Zealand in 2008 and at first she
struggled to be happy here. She was
lonely, depressed and soon noticed many
other migrants were having problems
adjusting to their new lives.
She said they often struggled just to
do everyday tasks such as banking, or
catching public transport. Many had
never even heard of a public library.
Almost all suffered from a sense of
isolation.
Also missing friends and family back
home in India, Baljit turned her focus to
helping other migrants in her community.
Armed with a commerce degree from
India, she set up a bank franchise in
Botany when she first got to Auckland
that was lucrative and successful.
But with having kids, she had to sell it.
Caring for Women
“At one stage I was depressed as well."
"I have suffered it, and that is how I know
exactly how people feel when they are
depressed,” said Baljit. “There is only so
much TV one can watch every day.”
“Only now because of all the work I have
been doing I am fantastic and completely
fine and others can be good as well."
Fluent in Punjabi, English, and Hindi,
Baljit started the Woman Care Trust
in Papatoetoe as a place to help other
Punjabi migrants for free.
“Many said to me, the ladies won’t come.
They only go to the Temple and their
home.”
But the numbers grew and now she has a
handful of staff helping out.
“It started in 2014 with just one other
woman, someone who wanted to learn
English. Soon that grew to 10 learning
English, then 100, and now (I'm helping)
600 Punjabi migrants connect with each
other, outside the temple or home.”
Soni Dheil runs fitness classes, like yoga.
At the last census results in 2013, the
Punjabi ethnic group in New Zealand
comprised just 324 people. Back then,
about 72% of Punjabi were born overseas,
compared with just 27% born in New
Zealand. It’s likely both figures have risen
since then.
Baljit said people travel to Papatoetoe
from all over Auckland each week to take
part in the wide range of free activities on
offer.
She applies for funding from various
sources, including the Community
Gaming Trusts. She said she’s lucky she
has been granted funding every year.
“We teach basic English. And then we
have got the computer classes here and
teach them how to do Facebook, Skype
and we teach email and Microsoft Word.
Just the basic stuff."
Fitness instructor Soni Dheil runs health
and nutrition sessions and interestingly
she tells the women what to wear when
they work out.
In Indian culture, Punjabi women do not
wear togs or bikinis.
“They said we are not wearing this or
showing any leg,” said Soni.
“You can wear long leggings or half
leggings and long top, a swimming top
instead.”
There were just a few women at first, but
now 30 women want to attend the pool
session every week.
Other activities include a play group for
young mums, soccer for young people
once a week, and traditional folk dancing.
There is also a room for men to hang out.
Baljit said all migrants are welcome and
you don’t have to be Punjabi.
“Any lady who is feeling lonely or sitting at
home depressed with nowhere to go they
can come here. If they don’t want to do
activities, they can come here and chat,”
she said.
Smita Biswas works for the Auckland
Council. She met Baljit at a workshop
and heard about her work and wanted to
collate Punjabi women’s stories into an
exhibition and record their oral histories.
“This is a project to document diverse
communities of Auckland,” said Biswas.
“We capture it from these people who
don’t normally engage with council or
with public libraries.”
“The women out here are able to regain
their identity in Punjabi culture and their
ladies night showcased that.”
The exhibition, part of the Auckland
Stories project, is now on permanent
display at the Trust, telling the stories of
14 women.
“I loved Baljit’s story. And then there were
other ladies, most of whom they said
how it helped their depression and their
alone-ness.
"Everywhere there was this common
thread about how the Woman Care Trust
made such a difference to their lives."
The exhibition launched in July at Ladies
Cultural Night at the Manukau Event
Centre in South Auckland. People came
from all over New Zealand.

There was dancing, cultural items,
stalls, food, and everyone wore
traditional dress.
“Once a year we do this ladies culture
night. We weren’t expecting that
many ladies last month - 2800 in fact
- to turn up so some ladies had to
wait outside. But we got them all in
eventually. It was a great night.”

India finishes at 8th position with highest ever medal

Indian athlete Jinson Johnson, who
clinched a gold medalin Men's 1500m
athletics event at the 18th edition of the
Asian Games, arrived in India on Friday.

that he will be preparing for upcoming
championships.
He said, "I'm very happy. In 800 m India
won gold and silver. I won gold in the
1500 m. Overall, it's a very good result. I'll
