National dismisses govt blueprint
as 'nothing new'
The announcement of the government
'blueprint' has been dismissed as nothing
more than damage control by the
National Party.
Party leaders and MPs from Labour, New
Zealand First and the Greens staged an
event in Auckland to unveil a high level
plan for the rest of this term, but the clear
intent was to demonstrate the coalition
was united, and in good shape.
The audience was handpicked, with
representatives from business, unions,
NGOs and academia.
Over the past weeks, there have been
open disagreements between New
Zealand First and Labour on topics
including the refugee quota and
employment law changes.
The prime minister laid out 12 policy
priorities, with three main themes - a
strong sustainable economy, ensuring
the well-being of New Zealanders and
providing "new" government leadership.
This differed from past governments, said
Jacinda Ardern, when intentions were
only spelt out in coalition or confidence
and supply agreements.

More awareness needed for
Prostate Cancer
Men are most at risk of the 35,897
new cases of cancer expected in New
Zealand in 2018, says the World Health
Organisation.
Male suffering from stomachache pain.
About 46 percent of New Zealand men
and a third of women are likely to develop
cancer, the World Health Organisation
report says.
Close to half the men in New Zealand
and Australia are at risk of getting cancer,
giving Australasia the highest regional rate
in the world, latest estimates from The
World Health Organisation (WHO) show.
WHO's International Agency for Research
on Cancer (IARC) estimates the risk of
New Zealand men developing cancer
before the age of 75 years is 46.27 percent.
The agency estimates the risk for women
in New Zealand at a third.
"The increasing cancer burden is due
to several factors including population
growth and ageing, as well as the
changing prevalence of certain causes
of cancer linked to social and economic
development," the agency's report said.
"This is particularly true in rapidly growing
economies, where a shift is observed from
cancers related to poverty and infections
to cancers associated with lifestyles more
typical of industrialised countries."
Cancer Society of New Zealand chief
executive Mike Kernaghan said an ageing
population and
lifestyle factors
including
diet and
exercise were
contributing to
the rising risk
of getting the
disease.
"All of those factors contribute, as we get
older, to an increased risk of cancer and
the concern is that we don't appear to
be paying enough attention here in New
Zealand to those issues," Mr Kernaghan
said.
He said cancer caused 30 percent of deaths
in New Zealand with lung cancer and
prostate cancer the most prevalent.
"Survival rates are… improving because of
new treatments that are available and the
care available.
"Having said that… we've still got a long
way to go in terms of improving our
performance here in New Zealand."
Mr Kernaghan said access to new and
proven medicines in New Zealand lagged
behind other countries around the world,
particularly Australia.
The IARC report also highlighted a
worrying rise in lung cancer in women,
with highest incidence rates in Hungary,
North America, China, Australia and New

Ganesh Chaturthi, also known as
Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganesh Chauth,

anniversary of Lord Ganesha - the god

El Nino weather pattern could bring
hot, dry conditions to a region
that is already dealing with falling
groundwater and river levels.
Hawke's Bay Regional Council chief
executive James Palmer said there was
a provision for 200 litres per second to
be drawn from the Tukituki River in an
emergency.
But he said the council still needed to
work out how it would be allocated.
"We are giving some thought to what
is the best way of using that water for
land owners."
Crop and tree stock farmers would be
eligible but not pasture farmers, he
said.
Farmers from Ongaonga and Tikokino
questioned why they were being given
emergency water for free too.
Ongaonga resident Kirsty Beagle said
she had to pay for tank water.
"Are these people that are going to be
taking an amount [ from the river]
going to be paying? No, it's free and it's
not good enough at all."
Meanwhile, Central Hawke's Bay
District mayor Alex Walker said she was
"really uncomfortable" with the regional
council granting consents to eight big
water users who wanted to take 15
million cubic metres of groundwater
from the Ruataniwha aquifer.
Known as the Tranche 2 consents, the
applications were on hold until all eight
applicants submitted their scientific
data to the regional council next
month.
Now the Ruataniwha Dam was no
longer on the table the district needed
to carefully weigh up how much water
was being taken from the aquifer, Ms
Walker said.
"I feel really uncomfortable about
adding another layer of complication to
that water security."
The district needed to find an
appropriate balance between how
much water it had, and how much it
was using, she said.
'If we keep taking...it's going to get even
harder to find that balance," Ms Walker

"There's no two ways about it, these

need to live up to. In 2018, we did
not meet the promises we made to

Four stabbings across New Zealand in one night

Police are investigating four stabbings
in different parts of the country
in September that occurred in
Christchurch, Moerewa, Napier and
Auckland in one night.
In Christchurch, a 52-year-old man has
been charged with murdering a 28-year-
old woman in the suburb of Ilam.
In the Far North, the fatal stabbing of
a 57-year-old man in Moerewa is being
treated as homicide.
In Hawke's Bay, the police are
investigating after a man arrived at a
Napier medical center with serious stab
wounds.
A woman who was stabbed in her
house last week in New Lynn, Auckland
is too distraught to talk about how she
got attacked in bright daylight on a
Sunday afternoon with a man armed
with a knife. It makes her bring back
the flashes of fear and the moments
of anxiety that she suffered during the
attack.

attack. If my family is getting harassed,
their safety is of utmost concern to
me. I am talking about the defence
of not just our own family and our
selves but also our neighbours and the
community at large.
We are not going to achieve anything
till the time the law changes. Only if
there is a change in law will the
police be able to do anything.

goods, US media have reported.
American media report that US
President Donald Trump is pushing
ahead with new tariffs on Chinese
goods.
The tariffs are expected to apply to
about $200 billion worth of imports
from China, including electronic parts
and consumer goods such as handbags.
It remains unclear when the new
import taxes - which could be as high as
25 percent - will go into effect.
Officials are reportedly still working on
the final list of products.
Mr Trump ordered his staff to start
preparing the tariffs this summer,
escalating a dispute over what the US
says are China's unfair trade practices,
such as state subsidies.
The new duties would add to tariffs

Chinese goods as part of that dispute,
as well as tariffs that China levied on
$50b in US goods in retaliation.

higher risk of obesity
While obesity is known to be a risk factor
for developing asthma, according to a
study, people with asthma are also likely
to become obese.
The research indicates that those who
develop asthma as adults and those
who have non-allergic asthma are at the
greatest risk of obesity.
According to the team behind the
research, the relationship between
asthma and obesity is more complex
than previously thought and more
research is needed to better understand
and tackle these two growing health
challenges.
Dr Subhabrata Moitra, the lead
researcher said, "We already know that
obesity can be a trigger for asthma,
perhaps via a physiological, metabolic or
inflammatory change but until now there
has been very little research on whether
the reverse is true, whether asthma can
lead to obesity."

an asthma attack or were woken up

The most common myth woven around
frozen food is that it is loaded with
preservatives. The simple science of
preservation is to store the food below 0
F which renders bacteria inactive thereby
preventing decay.
The fight between frozen and fresh foods
is largely biased. The fact is that frozen
food is healthier than its out-of-season
'fresh' counterparts which are picked
out even before they are ripe. These then
travel long distances and are stored in
warehouses before distribution.
The entire affair cannot possibly be
undertaken without preservatives as
the time span between production and
consumption is too long. On the other
hand, frozen foods are picked when
they are ripe and ready and are then
flash frozen to seal nutrients. There are
more than just two cherries on this cake.
Another compelling reason to favour
frozen foods is their longer expiration
periods. Of course, they don't persist
forever, but they do provide prolonged
margins.
"Having launched into the market just
over a year ago, we believe that there is a
real need for convenient, delicious, and
vegetarian ready-to-eat meals, snacks,
and pizzas in India, and we're excited

ensure that the consumer understands

The holy month teaches lessons on social justice, about resisting oppression and upholding humanity

A three-headed arrow through the neck
of an infant. A spear in the centre of a
youth’s chest. An arrow through the eye.
Women and children in chains. A last
call of a lone soldier beheaded for his
stand against tyranny and injustice.
This is the story of Karbala. History
books will never teach you about Imam
Hussain or the land named Karbala. You
may not have heard of the day (Ashura)
72 bravehearts stood against an army
of lakhs and yet, won. This is the story
that made the great British historian
Edward Gibbons say that will “awaken
the sympathy of the coldest reader.”
Even if you haven’t heard of Imam
Hussain, Karbala or Ashura now is the
time in global history that it means
the most. Look at the world around
you. There’s oppression, injustice and
mayhem everywhere. It is now more
than anytime that you need Imam
Hussain to inspire you. Imam Hussain
was a 7th century revolutionary leader
who made the ultimate stand for social
justice in the face of corruption and
tyranny. He gave everything, including
his life, for the dignity of his society.
Around 1,400 years ago, Imam
Hussain the grandson of the Prophet
Muhammad, rode with his family and
army to Kufa, a city in Iraq, after the
people pleaded with him to save them
from the oppression of their caliph,
Yazid I. During the journey, his caravan
was intercepted and diverted to Karbala,
Iraq. There, he and his family were
denied access to water in the scorching
hot desert for three days. Yazid’s army
murdered 72 of them and took the
women and children they hadn’t killed
as prisoners.
There have been battles throughout all
of history that have been just as evil and
dark. But none of them have been as
magnificent and heart-renching as this
one.
If you think ISIS has only been around
for the past couple of years, it’s wrong.
Imam Hussain fought the same ideology
1,400 years ago. He refused to pledge
allegiance to Yazid and his father,
who murdered, tortured, raped, and
oppressed people in the name of Islam.
In reality, they didn’t follow any of the
pillars of Islam, nor did they care about

that held people together no matter
their culture, race, or religion. Sounds
familiar?
Was it not for Imam Hussain’s stand,
Islam would have been a dead
religion long ago (sorry, bigots and
Islamophobes). For a long time, this
stand against injustice kept Muslims
safe and well. Unfortunately, ISIS,
AL-Qaeda, Saudi funded terrorists,
whatever you want to call them, had
enough and decided to tarnish that
image.
Recently, Saudi Arabia massacred
hundreds of innocent Yemenis at a
funeral, for no apparent reason but
power and money. Is that not what
Imam Hussain died fighting for?
Ashura (the day the massacre occurred
against the Prophet’s family) teaches us
about unity. It wasn’t a battle between
two princes Imam Hussain and Yazid,
but truly a battle about Good versus Evil.
It was only the right that united people
to fight for and alongside Imam Hussain.
There was a commander named Hur in
Yazid’s army who broke free from his
army and joined Imam Hussain in the
wee hours of day after realizing Yazid’s
corrupt ways. He was the first to be
martyred along with his son and slave.
Then there was John bin Huwai, an
Ethiopian Christian who fought
alongside Imam Hussain despite being
an old man, John gave his life for the
stand against oppression.
Imam Hussain, his family, and friends,
all of different races, cultures, and
religions, stood hand in hand against
an army of cruelty. If we, today, can put
aside our differences and hunger for
power and domination, we can easily
defeat anyone who stands in the way of
keeping humanity safe and inherently
good.
In Iraq (where his shrine is located)
each year, thousands of Iraqi people,
including orphans and poor, open their
homes to the visitors of Imam Hussain,
no matter their religion or ethnicity.
Who is Hussain, a non-profit
organization promoting his message
conducts food-drives, blood-drives, and
drives for the homeless in his honour. It
was started in London in 2012 and has
since become a global movement.
Perhaps, the most important of lessons
we can learn from Imam Hussain and his
army is that of resistance and sacrifice.
Mahatma Gandhi said during the Civil
Disobedience Movement, “If I had an
army like the 72 soldiers of Hussain, I
would have won freedom for India in 24
hours.”
All over the world, people today are
resisting to injustice, and they use Imam
Hussain as an example.
In Egypt five years ago, Hassan Shehata,
well known for standing up against
extremist groups and radical ideologies,
was murdered. His death spun Egyptian
Sunnis, Shia, and Christians into
standing up, and changing the discourse
locally, and nationally.
On January 2 2016, Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr
was executed by Saudi Arabia for doing
exactly what Sheikh Shehata did. His
murder caused international outrage,
especially in Bahrain, where persecution

Nimr’s, is just as common.
Nigerian cleric, Sheikh Zakzaky , has
been detained since December 2015 for
his stand against injustice. His followers
were burned alive for their loyalty.
Black Lives Matter, the Arab Spring,
Occupy Wall Street, NOW, and so many
other groups standing against injustice
in the world have Imam Hussain as an
example.
Once you truly understand the stories
of Karbala, listening to each one in
specific detail, you will understand why
millions of Shia every year mourn during
Muharram. It’s why they cry and wear
black and why Christians and Sunnis
alike join them in paying respects to
Imam Hussain and his brother Abbas
at their shrines in Karbala, Iraq. Not
because it’s merely a sad story, but
because sacrifices like this didn’t just
keep true Islam alive, but kept good alive
throughout the Eastern world.
You need to know of the powerful
women, like Zainab, the sister of Imam
Hussain, who embodied true feminism
and stood up to the tyrant Yazid in his
palace, even as they were handcuffed
and imprisoned.
Charles Dickens said, “If Hussain had
fought to quench his worldly desires...
then I do not understand why his sister,
wife, and children accompanied him.”
The first President of India, Dr Rajendra
Prasad, said, “The sacrifice of Imam
Hussain is not limited to one country, or
nation, but it is the hereditary state of
the brotherhood of all mankind.”
The battle of Karbala teaches us more
than how to combat the likes of ISIS and
stand up to any injustice. We can learn
from it feminism, ethics, morality, and
unity.
Karbala is not just a story for Shia
Muslims, it is a story for humanity.

Rhythm House, Dharmesh Parikh and team were the minds behind the spectacular celebration of Miss IndiaNZ 2018. It was the 16th annual extravaganza of Kiwi-
Indian elegance, fashion, music and dance.
This year’s event took place at Auckland’s Mahatma Gandhi Centre on Saturday 15th September.
As 20 contestants battled it out for the title, spectators were treated to a visual extravaganza of glitz, glamour, fashion, music & dance.
The winners of the night were Miss India NZ 2018 - Kartika Singh. 1st runner up - Hubaan Saher, 2nd runner up - Sinthia Kumar and Nishka Shettyand.
There was an outstanding performance by Abhishek Ravi the winner of “The Greatest NZ Dance Masala.
The judges for the evening were Surabhi Shukla Raval, Eric Ngan and Colin Mathura- Jeffrey.

RAHUL, PANT heroics in vain
as England win series 4-1
India went down in the fifth and
final Test against England by 118
runs at the Oval on Tuesday.
For India, KL Rahul ((149 off 224 balls)
and Rishabh Pant's (114 off 146 balls)
heroic resistance went in vain as
sensational centuries from both the
batsmen almost made it certain that
India would go to salvage some lost
pride and register an improbable win.
However, England captain had the last
laugh as his team clinched the series 4-1.
But, England leg-spinner Adil Rashid
dashed India's every hope with his lethal
blows. Evoking memories of Shane
Warne's 'Ball of the Century', the 30-year-
old removed the well-set Rahul in the
most exceptional manner, breaking
a brilliant 204-run partnership in the
process. Rashid also went on to removed
Pant in his very next over, ensuring that
England registered a thumping victory
and also giving opener Alastair Cook a
fitting farewell, who retired after the final
test.
Along with Cook, the series also ended
in a memorable fashion for pacer James
Anderson as he went on to become

Singh, who recently hung
up his boots, has revealed
that master blaster and
former Indian batsman
great Sachin Tendulkar had
motivated him to make
a comeback after he was
ignored from this year's
Commonwealth Games
(CWG) in Australia.
Addressing media here
on Saturday, post his
retirement, Sardar recalled,
"When I was left out from
CWG, I called Sachin paaji. I
was feeling very distraught.
I asked him that what he
used to do when he scored

criticise a lot on your bad performance.
He spoke to me for a long time and told
me to forget all criticisms, analyse my
performance by watching old videos and
play your natural game. It has helped me
a lot in the last four to five months."

nominated for Arjuna Award
Jakarta Asian Games gold medalist boxer
Amit Panghalwas on Tuesday nominated
for this year's prestigious Arjuna Award.
The 22-year-old boxer who hails from
Haryana was nominated for the award by
the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) after
his stupendous feat in the quadrennial
sporting event.
Amit joined Sonia Lather and Gaurav
Bidhuri in the list of boxing nominees for
the second highest sporting honour after
the Khel Ratna.
Panghal became the eighth Indian boxer
to claim an Asian Games gold medal.

recommended for Dronacharya Award
