Mahashivaratri celebrated all over New Zealand

Scammers steal
several thousand from two
elderly victims

Police are encouraging members of
the public to be vigilant after seeing an
increase in the number of reported scams
over the last 12 months. These scams
have ranged from IRD scams, sextortion,
tradesman and bank scams just to name
a few. It two separate incidents, elderly
people were scammed out of several
thousands of dollars by criminals this
year.
In the first scam, a resident received a
telephone call from a person claiming
to be ringing on behalf of the IRD. They
stated that the victim owed $6000 in
unpaid taxes, and that they would be
sending the police around to arrest them
if their overdue account was not paid in
full. The resident was then directed to
purchase ITunes gift cards then pass on
the redemption code to the scammer.
This incident resulted in the elderly
resident of being scammed out of $6000.
In the second scam, and elderly woman
was allegedly scammed out of nearly
$9000 by fake tradesmen who claimed
that they would fix her roof after scoping
her neighbourhood for work. The Con-
men managed to get this resident to pay
up-front prior to the commencement of
any work, however fled the address after
a concerned neighbour arrived at the
home and began asking questions of the
con-men.
Unfortunately these types of scams are
all too common. They are designed to
target elderly people who are the most
trusting, and are not always mobile
enough to check on the quality of
contractor work. Do not do business with
people who door knock or canvas your
neighbourhood for work Only employ
tradesmen or handymen that you can
trust and that have been recommended
to you. Do not be pressured in to making
a decision about hiring someone, if they
are genuine, they will be happy to wait
until you have made any decision and
sought advice.
If you receive a phone call from someone
claiming that you have won a lottery,
owe money or your your computer needs
fixing, don’t be fooled. Scammers will use
a variety of techniques to gain access to
your money and personal information;
they can come across genuine and
professional so bear this in mind.
Don’t provide personal information
over the telephone to anyone. Your
information can be used to access your
bank accounts, your computer, or other
information that can be used to incur
debt or accounts with businesses. If you
think you have been scammed or have
information about a scam, contact the
police immediately and report the scam
to www.netsafe.org.nz, Netsafe also has a
range of information for Parents, Staying
Safe online and online bullying advice.

Climate change protest

supporting next week's school strike
for action on climate change are being
careful not to encourage students to
wag classes to protest.
The strike scheduled for Friday 15
March is part of an international
day of action and organisers are
expecting thousands of young people
to participate. The protest includes a
march on Parliament and it's clear that
Labour and Green MPs are supportive
of the strike while National Party MPs
said it should not be happening on a
school day.
Green Party co-leader and climate
change minister James Shaw agreed
immediately when asked on TVNZ's Q
and A programme on Monday night if
students should leave classes to protest
next week. Education Minister Chris
Hipkins said it was up to schools to
decide how to handle the strike.
Agriculture minister Damien O'Connor
said he would be happy for his children
to go on the strike.
National Party leader Simon Bridges
said climate change was an important
issue, but the strike should not have
been held on a school day.
He said the protest could have been
timed to coincide with the upcoming
strike by secondary school teachers
on 3 April. Mr Bridges said a small
proportion of school children closely
followed climate change and he
doubted anyone would contest their
participation in the strike.
National Party education spokesperson
Nikki Kaye said government ministers
should not be encouraging students
to participate. "The main thing is
that parents have given permission,
otherwise we may have unsupervised
kids, 12 or 13 years old, in the streets."
Ms Kaye said ideally the strike would
have been held outside of school hours.
National Party MP Judith Collins was
dismissive of the protest action.
"Their little protest is not going to help
the world one bit," she said.
The former environment minister, Nick
Smith, said the cause was good but a
strike was not the best option.
Ms Handford said more schools were
supporting the strike than opposing it
and it appeared likely that thousands of

Golden Jubilee with exuberance & fun

Viscount School in Mangere celebrated
its 50 year of its existence on 23rd
February with lots of fun and gaiety. It
was heartening to see the involvement
of the local community with families
coming over to take part in the day long
activities organised in the school on this
occasion.
Viscount School was started in year
1969 with 14 teachers and 264 students

Over the last two years there have

Like a huge river that is slowly flowing
through valleys, feeding rivers and
tributaries and depositing its silt to
carve new landscapes, immigration is
reshaping New Zealand’s present and
future - not just its weave, texture and
feel but also its entire economic, social
and cultural demography. Immigration
may undoubtedly be one of the biggest
challenges that is being faced by the
country today.
Ironically, defining ourselves as a nation
of immigrants, we also view immigration
as a threat. Immigration arouses a
great subject of debate and most New
Zealanders are quite ambivalent in
their response when it comes to this
question. Whether it is a yes or a no to
immigration? – there is still no clarity.
In 2015 and 2016 India was the biggest
source of migration-driven population
growth, contributing net gains of more
than 12,000 in each of those years.
In the 12 months to June migration
added another 64,995 souls to this
country’s population, according to
Statistics NZ, which while still hugely
high by historical standards, was down
by 10.1% from the net gain of 72,305 for
the 12 months to June 2017 and down
5.9% compared to the net gain of 69,090
in the 12 months to June 2016.

in fewer Indians coming on residency

In the 12 months to June 2016 10,133
Indian citizens arrived on student visas,
but by the 12 months to June last year
that number had declined by 37.5% to
6334.

our present scenario. Our New Zealand
People’s Party leader, Roshan Nauhria
has on several occasions characterised
the under estimation of the skill sets
that immigrants bring to our country.
He has repeatedly voiced serious views
and expressed concern at the increase
in the number of applications that have
been declined or are constantly over
scrutinised because of the ethnicity of
the applicant especially if they are from
Asian countries. The matter is serious. If
we continue this blind eye policy, there
is real danger we will be inundated with
crisis with seriously large consequences.
We will face an ethical and moral
backlash at some point because of the
games we are playing with the lives of
not just individuals but families at large.
A lot of individuals and families
come here to genuinely get a high-
quality work life balance - and
they want to come to the safest,
most trustworthy countries. We
need to uphold the image of this
nation – and our integrity.
Current immigration trends threaten
New Zealand’s portrayal of the most
fundamental values of a "social
contract", the promise that we give
people when we invite them to come
and live in our country. We are not
saying that we take a soft stand on
wrong doings, but we formulate tougher
laws limiting who can enter, work, and
claim welfare benefits. Past performance
with dilly dallying and not taking a
conclusive decision have not succeeded
in allaying the public's anxiety and fears.
The two most important questions we
need to ask are –
1. Do we need more Skilled
Talent?
If no, we close immigration gates till
further requirement.
If yes, which is quite obvious, (and our
economists can explain) - What kinds of
talent should we seek?
2. How do we attract this pool
of skilled talent to come to New
Zealand and stay?
For this the applicant should be
screened from the country of their
residence with the point system
ranked according to their education,
labour skills, language fluency, and
other factors conducive to successful
assimilation. This process should not
be happening after landing here, on the
shores of uncertainty.
Our current system suffers from some
endemic discriminative problems.
Applicants should not be on temporary
visas and uncertain promises living in
New Zealand. A permanent decision
conveyed to them before they leave their
original country of residence, will induce
a sense of fairness, with skilled people
open to accepting our "offer" to come
here if they do not have better offers at
home or elsewhere.
We have to work towards encouraging
easier, faster naturalization, which other
nations have achieved. Not only must we
secure the legitimacy of the process by
making it a speedy, reliable process for
genuine applicants, but also improve the
accuracy and fairness by uprooting the
malignancy internally.
One might have expected the country
of immigrants with a racial, ethnic, and
national mix to have ideal numbers of
representation politically to address
their issues. Yet somehow, despite the
source countries populations in large
numbers in New Zealand, we are not
yet sufficiently numerous to secure the
seats politically. And a serious effort to
create a balance is required. We need
more political representation in the
Parliament as a universalistic call of the
hour.
NZPP has requested more people
particularly the youth to join the party
and as the new members naturalize and
then organize politically to defend their
group interests, change will happen
automatically and gradually start
becoming entrenched in the system.
Meanwhile, our government continues
to receive the revenue generated by
the industry, immigration agents and
advisors continue to charge their fee
to get their fair share from the pie,
employers continue to exploit workers,
private training and educational
institutions continue to operate in the
country, unlicensed establishments
continue to attract Indian students to
study abroad, while the most vulnerable
migrants continue to have their
reputation and lives shredded.
A plague and a disease called
immigration has entered the country
and has started wreaking havoc. It is a
matter of time before we find out the
magnitude of the colossal damage -
Whose loss will it be anyway?

breadth of the country to address
and hear problems related to
Immigration and Law and Order.

meetings in Tauranga, Hamilton,
Hastings and Napier to talk to

When it comes to a Capital Gains
Tax, very few New Zealanders will be
bystanders.
The Government’s Tax Working Group’s
recommendations reach deep into our
lives for a bigger clip of the ticket.
It would do that by imposing one of the
highest rates of Capital Gains Tax in the
world, allowing the Government to reap
$8.3 billion extra in its first five years
from ordinary Kiwis. Very little escapes
its net - small business owners, farmers,
investors, bach and lifestyle owners
would all be hit.
Even the family home could be carved
up for tax purposes, with Inland
Revenue taking an interest in your
boarders and even your flatmates.
After 10 years, the Government would
be taking an extra $6 billion annually
from Kiwis.

or build a productive business. The
Government would literally be taxing
our prosperity. But we think the
tax burden should be reduced, not
increased.
The Prime Minister claims this tax is
about fairness. That doesn’t cut it.
How is it fair on the small business
owner who works hard building up their
business, pays tax every single year,
who creates jobs and pays wages? The
Government would take a third of the
nest egg they had intended to live on in
retirement when they sell up.
If it’s about fairness, then why is an
$8 million home in Auckland exempt,
but a $350,000 rental in Whanganui,
or the West Coast, or Invercargill, gets
hammered with a Capital Gains Tax?
It is misleading to claim that only
the wealthy will pay a Capital Gains
Tax. It is the wealthy who can afford
good accountants, can move their
investments offshore.
But it’s the small business owner, your
local plumber or hairdresser, who can’t
move their business offshore, and who
will end up paying the tax. It is middle
New Zealand who will be hit the hardest.
It’s also going to impact every single
New Zealander with a KiwiSaver
account.

see Kiwis every day in our electorates,
working hard, scrimping and saving in
order to get ahead for themselves and
for their families.
Kiwis are rightly worried that a Capital
Gains Tax will affect their KiwiSaver,
their retirement savings, their small
rental properties and their farms. It will
affect all Kiwis in some way.

who are working hard to get ahead.
Those people who risk their own money
to employ others and start a business,
we don’t think you should be taxed on
your hard work.
You work hard all your life, it’s not right
that you’re taxed hard before retirement.

Consultation' needed on timing
for CGT law change - Peters
New Zealand First leader Winston Peters
says nothing is a done deal regarding
tax changes, including whether the
government passes legislation to
implement them ahead of the next
election.The government's Tax Working
Group recommended a broad capital gains
tax and a raft of other changes to the tax
system, including environmental taxes and
changes to savings taxes, in its report back
to the government a fortnight ago.
Finance Minister Grant Robertson has
long made it clear the government's plan
was to pass legislation implementing any
tax changes, including a possible capital
gains tax, ahead of the next election.
That would give New Zealanders the
chance to vote on the changes, as it would
not take effect until April 2021.
The law could be repealed if the
government were to change.
In response to a direct question about
whether the tax changes would be
legislated for this term, Mr Peters said "that
remains part of the consultation process".
"At the end, when we've finished
consultation and come to a decision, that
question will be able to be decided then,
but it's not now."
Mr Peters said regardless of what the
Prime Minister or Mr Robertson had said,
it would still be a matter for consultation.
"We don't know where this thing ends up
and what its componentry and elements
would be. At that point in time, it's not that
there is legislation that matters, it's what's
in it that matters, surely."

The New Zealand Government created
the Tax Working Group to consider
the future of tax. Chaired by former
Finance Minister Hon Sir Michael Cullen,
it will provide recommendations to
Government that would improve the
fairness, balance and structure of the tax
system over the next 10 years. It sought
input from a diverse and wide range of
New Zealanders and ran a two-month
public consultation between 1 March and
30 April 2018.
In September 2018, the Tax Working
Group released an interim report. Final
recommendations were released on 21st
February 2019 are as under.
Lowering personal income tax
The Group has investigated a range of
reductions in personal income tax. Its
preferred approach is allowing New
Zealanders to earn more at the lowest tax
rate of 10.5%. This would reduce income
inequality, benefit all full-time workers,
and support those transitioning into
work.
Encourage savings
The Group has identified a range of
measures to encourage saving, targeting
those at lower- and middle-income levels.
These include refunding the Employer
Superannuation Contribution Tax (ESCT)
for KiwiSaver members earning less than

Gallipoli war hero’s family homestead goes up for sale

A stately former farm homestead which traces its roots back

to the bloody battlefield of Gallipoli has been placed on the
market for sale.

The historic property known as Kohatunui in the settlement

of Whana Whana some 48 kilometres west of Hastings in
Hawke’s Bay was built in 1921 by New Zealand army officer
Eric Beamish who served in the Hawke’s Bay Mounted Rifles
division in World War I.

Now, the grand-children of Eric and Laila Beamish are

market for sale.

Zealand’s most well-known fashion designers

There seems to be more choice for
property hunters in the Auckland region,
as new properties coming to the market
are up while asking prices stay static,
but Kiwis’ passion for property remains
strong.
Eight regions (Waikato, Gisborne,
Wellington, Nelson and Bays, Otago,
Southland, Central North Island and
Manawatu/Wanganui) are experiencing
an all-time asking price highs and this
seems to be the major driving force
behind a new record high for New
Zealand’s average asking house price.
Unfortunately, Auckland is not one of
those regions. The national property
asking price in January 2019 climbed
3.3% on the previous month to $695,116
- the highest on record.
While total housing stock across the
nation was down 2.5% when compared
to January 2018, in the Auckland region
stock was up 4.6% with a total of 9,081
homes on the market. Of these 9,081
homes, 2,420 were new listings,
which is a 12.1% increase on
January 2018. The average
asking price in the Auckland
region was flat (a slight increase
of 0.7% to $960,482) when
compared to December 2018.

for residential properties
increased by 5.8% from $520,000
in January 2018 to $550,000

Sadhguru has offered the Mahashivratri
sadhana, which allows one to become
more receptive to the possibilities of
Mahashivratri. Anyone over the age
of 8 can participate. Here are the
instructions.
The Mahashivratri sadhana is a
preparation for Mahashivratri – a night
of tremendous possibilities. Anyone
over the age of eight can participate
in the sadhana, which can be done
for a duration of either 40, 21, 14, 7
or 3 consecutive days leading up to
Mahashivratri on March 4, 2019. The 40-
day sadhana starts from Jan 24, 21-day
from Feb 12, 14-day from Feb 19, 7-day
from Feb 26, and 3-day from March 2.
Daily Sadhana Process.The daily process
for the sadhana is as follows:
Last year, I got the opportunity to speak
in Parliament as we celebrated the 125th
anniversary of women’s suffrage in New
Zealand. It was a particular honour for
me partly because I have worked in the
women’s rights field most of my life and
partly because I chose to move to New
Zealand largely because this was the first
self-governing country in the world where
women won the right to vote.
Women’s suffrage marked the end of
women’s exclusion from politics. Women
voted for the first time in the 1893
elections. That was also the year that
Elizabeth Yates became the Mayor of
Onehunga (which is in the Maungakiekie
electorate where I am based) – this was
the first time such a post had been held by
a woman anywhere in the British Empire.
We currently have our third woman
Prime Minister. All our key constitutional
positions – Prime Minister, Governor
General, Speaker of the House of
Representatives, Attorney-General and
Chief Justice – have been held by women.
As a woman Member of Parliament of
Indian origin, I also acknowledge the
women of colour who have gone before
me and the struggles they fought. They are
the women on whose shoulders I stand
and I mentioned some of them in my
suffrage speech in Parliament last year.

There were many
Indian and Chinese women who fought
over decades to organise their own
organisations and women's auxiliary

history - women like Shantiben Parbhu
and Ruxmani Kasanji who fought to be
able to express their ethnic and religious male counterparts and less compared
identities as New Zealanders. These were
women who fought through the isolation
that many migrant women of those
times faced. I acknowledged the fact that
without women like them, I wouldn't be
here today. I was pleased to see Ruxmani
Kasanji’s appointed Member of the New
Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) in
recognition of her services to the Indian
community.
