ENG 252: 04

 Proposal: What are major multicultural or global issues professional writers

have to consider?

1. Purpose:

There are many issues professional writers have to consider:

 The sensitivity of the topic

 The past/present of the cultural issue written about

 The differing ideas including racist ones

 Overgeneralizations/stereotypes

 Maturity of the reader

2. Background:

I find this subject fascinating and though the world may see things differently, I want

to explore those differences. I think readers deserve to know the troubles and wonders

professional writers explore when they write a piece on certain more sensitive topics.

I consider these questions and issues when I read an article in the media. What would

happen if a professional writer wrote about a topic based in their own racist

insensitive views instead of taking the reader into account? How many people would

be in some uproar if a popular NYT author wrote something so insensitive about a

community already in turmoil? I think authors deserve to be scrutinized, but I think I

want to also explore and open the vault on the troubles they go through probably on a

daily basis. I want to also explore authors writings by those considered in the same

culture/background. How is it different than those authors who write about the same

topic, but aren’t in the same community?

“Despite the benefits associated with emphasizing diversity, many instructors are

reluctant to make changes in their classrooms. Some of us worry that our competence

related to diverse students and issues is not sufficient to qualify us to address diversity

in our classrooms or that in trying to be inclusive, we will inadvertently offend.”

(Sue, Torino, Capodilupo, Rivera & Lin, 2009; Sue et al., 2011).

3. Significance:

I think this topic is important. I’m a news junkie, and I’d love to explore this issue in

different perspectives; as a reader, as a writer, and as an editor. I hope to learn about

multiculturally sensitive writing. I think there’s so much turmoil in our society,

therefore writers have to be so careful with whatever subject they choose to write

about.

I think my perspective is objective. I think writers are slanted when it comes to

politics, but I think unless the writer is completely racist multicultural writing for

professional writers are on the same page. Be sensitive and be careful. After I

complete this project, I think I may share my outcomes with the public when my

project is complete. Why? Because I want to shine a light on the issue as we go

through such a turbulent time.

Some things important on this topic are: recognition of the topic. How sensitive is it

and how should the writer go about describing the events surrounding the cultural

issue. Respect the culture. Writing insensitive remarks that may or may not be

opinionated is wrong. Acknowledging the culture, the sensitivity of the culture,

realize they have to be sensitive and be objective.

1. Description:

I want to explore the sensitive subjects’ writers come across and discover/shine a

light on the trouble’s writers go through when they write about certain topics. What is

their thinking? What do they consider when writing about topics important to them?

2. Outline:

Working thesis: Professional writers must consider a variety of things when they write

about certain sensitive topics.

3. Problems:

One problem I think I will have is finding sources. A lot of professional writers don’t

want to write about this topic. I’ll have trouble finding scholarly articles.
