Background

Parker & Co Consulting Scenario

Parker & Co Consulting started 30 years ago in 1983 and been growing ever since. Parker & Co
Consulting is a Law firm specialising in trademark Law.
The firm started of small in the Western suburbs of Sydney and after a number of successful big
contracts and an increase in staff they have decided to move to the CBD and open branch offices in
Melbourne and Auckland.
As part of the move they have decided to completely redesign their network and server
infrastructure.
They currently have 60 staff containing Lawyers, Accountants, Receptionists, IT staff and Managers.

Design Considerations
Even though Parker & Co have an in-house IT department they would like to outsource the Design,
initial installation of the network and server upgrade to a company specialising in this area due to
time constraints. After the new network is installed the in-house IT will maintain it.

Servers

The New server/s are to replace the old existing ones, but existing data should always be
maintained, available and accessible.
Users in remote offices should be able to logon to their server and work even if there is no
connection to the head office.
Along with the new addressing scheme they would like all addressing in the network to be
automated.
Unlike the previous setup Parker & Co would like centralised management of the company’s users
and storage systems. Also they are thinking of implementing an internal website and FTP Server.
Both the Web and FTP site should have easy to remember and logical name for accessing them.
Due to the amount of PCs in the company Parker & Co would like to implement a quick and efficient
way of setting up new PCs and resolving issues with current PCs. Also they would like to implement
an easy update system for their PC updates.
Parker & Co are very serious about security and would like to implement a Business Anti-virus
solution.

Network

After a number of consultations Parker & Co would like the following LAN/WAN implementations:
 All branch offices should be able to communicate with each other
 Network monitoring is to be implemented.
 An Internal web server will need to be access over the internet. Only web traffic is allowed
to this server.
 They want key staff to be able to establish a secure connection to the company network
from home.
 All ping traffic is to be blocked.
