5th Sunday In Lent
Lord’s Supper - Traditional
Lent is my favorite liturgical season. Holy Week is my favorite part of the Lenten season.
And Easter is my absolute favorite holiday. For some Christians, their faith rests on
Christmas, on God becoming flesh and living among us. For others, Good Friday is the focal
point, the death of Jesus as atonement for our sins. For me, both of these events are vital, but
the story is not complete without the resurrection.
However, Easter is not the same without Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. The
resurrection doesn’t mean as much without Jesus’ command to love one another as he loved
us, or his trial before the people, or his death on the cross. We like the Palm Sunday parade,
and we love the Easter celebration. But many would rather avoid what comes in between.
Ann Weems, the late Presbyterian poet wrote about this in her piece “Between Parades”
which is published in her book Kneeling in Jerusalem: Poetry for Lent and Easter. Weems
writes:
As we travel the road to Jerusalem, this year especially I invite you to take in all that is Holy
Week. Join us for our joint worship services for Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Reflect
on what the entire passion story means, not just the triumphant parts. Take some time for
rest, reflection, and prayer between the parades. Walk down the dark and difficult path
toward the cross. When we do this, our Easter celebration is that much sweeter.
Peace-
Rev. Leigh

Join us for our last night of Wednesdays on the Hill at 6 pm on April 10. We'll
have our spring indoor picnic with a pizza party, desserts, and a presentation of
Eight Amazing Days, the story of Palm Sunday- Easter. Songs, instrumental music,
drama! Be there to see what our wonderful volunteers have taught our kids this
winter. There is a sign up sheet on the door to the Music/Education office area.
Looking ahead: Mother's Day isn't just for mom. Honor all the significant women
in your life with a gift of homemade chocolate covered candied apples. Look no
further for the perfect gift! Watch your bulletin for order forms...
Nine volunteers served a St. Patrick’s day themed meal to 81
guests on March 13th. The menu was shepherd’s pie, dinner
roll, peaches or applesauce, a shamrock cookie, and a granola
bar. For information about how you can help, call Barb or Jim
Kamerer at 724.283.2248.
April 7th is the date for our baking date for “Meals On
Wheels”. We will have tables set up on the stage are
in the Fellowship Hall. We will deliver our baked
goods to Meals on Wheels on Monday, April 8th.
Please remember to omit nuts and frostings on your
cookies, cakes, quick breads, muffins, gingerbreads, angel foods, etc. Thanking each
of you in advance. Monetary gifts are accepted also. Make your check to Hill U.P.
Church with “Meals On Wheels” in the memo section. In years past we have always
surprised them with the nice quantity we take them. On behalf of Presbyterian
Women, Bea Welch - Moderator.
As in past years, our Layette Sundays are in May. This year the dates are May 12th
and 19th. We will have our baby crib set up in the Overflow area of the Church near
the Adult Library for all the beautiful baby clothing, blankets, quilts, etc. Many of you
enjoy knitting and crocheting caps, sweaters, etc. and others enjoy shopping. Your
generosity is always appreciated. On behalf of Presbyterian Women, Bea Welch -
Moderator.
Time for spring cleaning of the Church yard! Helpers are needed for pruning trees,
shaping shrubs, and removing several bushes. Later in the spring, we’ll be meeting
to edge and mulch. All are welcome to join in the fun on Saturday, April 6th at 9:00
a.m. Bring (if you have them) shovels, rakes, extension cords, trimmers, work
gloves, and willing hands. Questions? Contact Gerry Graham or Pete McElhaney.
