Intelligent Power Socket:

Tasks accomplished :
1. Power factor measurement:
- Used an Arduino NANO to compare and record the difference between the
zero-crossing instants of two sinusoidal signal which were passed through a
comparator to get a square wave.
- The difference along with the frequency were used to calculate the phase angle
- We achieved a precision of 5 degrees. It can be improved by using ensemble
average over a larger time interval.
1. Current measurement
- Used a small ferrite core to measure current at output of the transformer with
turns ratio 17:55.
- Observation for input current from mains and output voltage :

Current Voltage

56.9mA 9.3mV

100mA 15.5mV

236mA 21mV

622mA 42.4mV
3. Power Supply circuit for the arduino:
- Used a transformer with full wave rectifier with voltage regulator and capacitor to
obtain a constant DC value of 4.96V for powering the Arduino NANO.

Tasks to be worked on for Evaluation two:

1. Current Measurement:
- Use a differential amplifier circuit to increase the output voltage with a gain of 11
and common- mode gain ~ v.small and then observe the resultant current
output.
- Push the measurement value to 1 A mains current.
2. Voltage measurement:
- Pass the output of full wave bridge rectifier to potentiometer fives voltage range
in 5V
- Use single ended supply OP-AMP as buffer and give the output to the ADC of
Arduino, to measure voltage values. The maximum value can be detected and
used for calculation of RMS voltage.
3. Data Transmission using a Wi-Fi module.
- Choose wifi over bluetooth to have a better control on the data and to increase
the range.
- It also gives the option to have the data sent to multiple devices simultaneously.
