pasará la mayor parte de su vida. Sin embargo, es
común encontrar que en las perspectivas teóricas
existentes en el área ocupacional, se presenta
una confusión entre el abordaje tradicional, de
predominancia negativa y en todo caso reactiva,

L
a conceptualización de la salud y la enfermedad se han abor-
dado desde diversos contextos, aproximaciones y criterios, con
normas y estándares dinámicos, que a decir de Jahoda (1958) se
modifican con el tiempo, el lugar, la cultura y las expectativas de la so-
ciedad; sin embargo, tradicionalmente la conceptualización de la salud
en general, se ha enfocado principalmente de manera negativa, ya sea
como ausencia de enfermedad o como recuperación de la normalidad,
asociándola primordialmente a indicadores negativos de salud, y en
este sentido, homologando indicadores de salud a indicadores de en-
fermedad.
Siguiendo con esta idea, comúnmente es homologado el término
de “salud mental” al de “enfermedad mental”, en este sentido, la salud
mental se ha estudiado principalmente a partir de la identificación de
trastornos mentales o psicopatologías, así como en el desarrollo de sus
indicadores. Sin embargo, la salud mental no debe ser homologada a la
enfermedad mental; incluso, la salud mental tampoco debe ser consi-
derada como la ausencia de enfermedad mental.
Al respecto señala Nordenfelt (2000) que la simple ausencia de
enfermedad no garantiza la existencia de salud, por lo que debe exis-
tir otra clase de salud, una que no esta asociada a la enfermedad; en
otras palabras, la salud conceptualizada desde un enfoque positivo, no
se encausa a la enfermedad, sino que se centra en indicadores positi-
vos de salud.
Al respecto, en 1992 la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS)
señala que la salud mental es un constructo que implica la capacidad
que tiene un individuo, para establecer relaciones positivas con otros y
participar constructivamente en la modificación del ambiente, implica
también la capacidad para enfrentar conflictos y desarrollar estrategias
adecuadas para manejar el estrés, además de una percepción de au-
toeficacia, buen autoconcepto y adaptación al trabajo; la misma OMS
(2001) describe a la salud mental como un estado de bienestar en el

cual el individuo se da cuenta de sus propias aptitudes, puede afrontar
las presiones normales de la vida, puede trabajar productiva y fructífe-
ramente y es capaz de hacer una contribución a su comunidad.
Asimismo, menciona Pando (2012) que son pocos los autores que
aportan al concepto de la salud mental positiva, pero además son es-
casas las concepciones aplicadas a la salud ocupacional. Situación que
requiere ser modificada, ya que el trabajo es una de las principales acti-
vidades humanas y a la que se le dedica gran parte de la vida. En el caso
particular de los docentes esto cobra gran trascendencia, ya que su
intelectualidad y capacidad para la realización de funciones dependen
del grado de salud mental que estos posean.
A pesar de que existen algunos acercamientos por estudiar la sa-
lud mental positiva, la evidencia aun es escasa, por ejemplo, Amar et
al., (2008), compararon la salud mental positiva en menores que traba-
jaban y no trabajaban, los hallazgos indicaron que más que el trabajo,
el problema mayor fueron las precarias condiciones en las que vivían
los menores.
Se conoce poco de los factores referentes a las condiciones de
trabajo, específicamente de los docentes, que pueden ser predictivos
de salud mental positiva, ya que de acuerdo a la Organización Interna-
cional del Trabajo (OIT), éste debe ayudar a las personas a desarrollar
sus potencialidades y a lograr su bienestar.
En los últimos años, ha habido un importante avance hacia un
posicionamiento teórico que tome en cuenta indicadores positivos en
el trabajo que ayuden al incremento de la salud mental. Es por eso que
este estudio se fundamenta en un modelo teórico de abordaje autén-
ticamente positivo, basado en la psicología positiva, que tiene como
objetivo la promoción de la salud (Seligman y Peterson, 2003), es así
que aborda aspectos como bienestar y fortalezas personales, así tam-
bién recupera aportaciones del humanismo como son el desarrollo de
capacidades y potencialidades humanas (Maslow, 1954, 1962; Allport,

consta de 40 reactivos en escala tipo Likert, aborda aspectos positivos
de la salud mental ocupacional como son el bienestar personal en el
trabajo, la filosofía de vida laboral, las relaciones interpersonales positi-
vas en el trabajo, la inmersión en la tarea, las fortalezas personales en el
ámbito laboral, y el empoderamiento en el trabajo (figura 1), distribuidos
en cuatro dimensiones: cognitiva, socioafectiva, comportamental y es-
piritual, la forma de calificación fue por medio de puntuación z, distribu-
yendo de manera igualitaria los puntajes obtenidos para esta población,
asignando niveles: bajo, moderado, alto y muy alto.

Análisis de datos
Por medio del programa SPSS versión 22, se elaboró una base de da-
tos la cual se validó para cuidar la calidad de la información, posterior-
mente se aplicó estadística descriptiva a variables numéricas, como
frecuencias simples y porcentajes. A los puntajes del instrumento, se
les aplicó cálculo de puntuación z para obtener niveles.

en segundo lugar con un 41% se encuentra la inmersión en la tarea,
seguida del empoderamiento en el trabajo (36%) en tercer lugar, asi
como las relaciones interpersonales positivas en el trabajo (33%) y la
filosofía de vida laboral (33%), mientras que la frecuencia más baja
con un 20% fue para las fortalezas personales en el ámbito laboral
(ver tabla 1).
