EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

New Learning Environment is a newly encountered environment that a certain

person needs to adjust from what recently environment they experienced. It provides

new learning that can help to enhance new knowledge and values. It encompasses the

culture of a school or class. Its presiding ethos and characteristics including how

individuals interact with and treat one another. The students of the Sisters of Mary

School – Boystown, Inc., had once deal with it through the help of their mother-sisters,

helping brothers, etc. This study aimed to determine the different effects of the new

learning environment to the academic performances of the Grade 8 students of the said

school. A semi-structured interview was used to gather the data and the results of the

study show that there are positive effects (motivation) and negative effects (noisy

environment, busy schedules) that a new learning environment brings to the students of

the Sisters of Mary School – Boystown, Inc. To conquer the negative effects, the

teachers and the mother-sisters must help the students in coping up with the school

rules and monitor their performance regularly. Together with the school administrator,

they may be able to help the future Grade 7 in coping up with the new learning

environment in a small span of time.

CHAPTER 1
PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

INTRODUCTION:

New learning environment is the newly encountered environment that a certain

person needs to adjust from what recently environment they experienced. It provides

new learning that can help to enhance new knowledge and values. It encompasses the

culture of a school or class. Its presiding ethos and characteristics including how

individuals interact with and treat one another.

In the Philippines, there is a lot of high school that has been offered to the

students after graduating in elementary. Some of the instances that they encountered,

students find it difficult to cope up to their new learning environment and setting. Most

especially, those who are transferee from the other school whose place does not avail

high school. Here at the Sisters of Mary School – Boystown that is located in Tungkop,

Minglanilla, Cebu, they offer free education to those who belong to the poorest of the

poor and unprivileged students and whose parents cannot afford the payment of the

school. They did not only offer free education, but they also provide free food, clothing,

home, and other necessities of the students. The school provided entrance examination

to those students in Visayas and Mindanao.

The researchers conducted this study to determine the coping mechanism of the

grade 8 students with respect to their academic performances in the new learning

environment. The researchers selected the grade 8 students as the participants of this

study because they experienced a lot from their previous level. Aside from that, they can

also give us exact information for what we are asking are based on their experience.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

This study aimed determine the different effects of the new learning environment

in the academic to performances of the grade 8 students of the Sisters of Mary School-

Boystown, Inc. S.Y. 2018-2019.

This study wanted to answer these following questions:

1.What are the perceptions of the grade 8 students towards the new learning

environment?

2.How can it affects the grade 8 students especially in their grades?

3.What are the different ways that the grade 8 students made in order to cope up

the new learning environment?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION:

This research is conducted to determine the different effects of the new learning

environment in the academic performances of the grade 8 students of the Sisters of

Mary School-Boystown, Inc. S.Y. 2018-2019.

This study focuses on the new learning environment, if it really affects the

academic performances of the grade 8 students especially in their grades, whether it is

a good effects or bad effect. This research is for the Sisters of Mary School-Boystown

students only, mainly the grade 8 students, not the grade 8 students outside, not even

EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY:

This study was conducted through phenomenological study which tackles the

experience of an individual or a group in a given event. So, with the cooperation of the

of the grade 8 students we were able to determine the different effects of the new

learning environment to their academic performance. The following are those in respect

would benefit and acquire hints on how to help the future grade 7 students to cope up

with their new learning environment.

 THE ADMINISTRATOR- Specifically the school principal, because they

will be able to find solutions and better school rules that may possibly help

the next generations of grade 7 students to adopt the new academic

learning environment.

 THE SUBJECT TEACHER/ADVISER- Basically because they are the one

who has the longest time mingling with the students and they are the one

who could differentiate their behaviour with the topic discussed. This

research may help them to create more effective lesson plan to help the

students to adopt the new learning environment quickly.

EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

 FRESHMEN/STUDENTS-They are the future grade 7, where in fact they

need a guide on how to cope up with the new learning environment, so

this research is very beneficial to them since it will help them to be more

responsible in doing their daily duties in adopting with the new

environment.

DEFINITION OF TERMS:

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT-refers to the diverse physical locations, contexts,

CHAPTER 2
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

New learning environment refers to the new locations of places that allows the

student to learn. It means that the students coping up with new learning environment in

different ways. According to Feldman and Paulsen (1998), ‘a rich vein of the literature

focuses on the effects of classroom interactions between faculty and students as peers.

Pektas.S.&M. (2014). ‘Blended learning has already become an indispensable part of

education in many fields. However, the majority of existing research on blended learning

has assumed a homogeneity discipline. This study suggests that research highlighting

disciplinary effects and differences is much needed to effectively develop courses and

tools consonant with the characteristics if each discipline. To help close this research

gap, this paper focuses on design education and analyses student’s experiences in a

‘blended design studio’ that combine the model learning management system, live video

conferencing, and social networking media (Facebook) with traditional face-to-face

learning (design studio). Students perception of the methods and tools were elicited

through structured and open-ended questions and qualitative variations in responses

were categorized. Subsequent qualitative analysis revealed that the characteristic of

soft-applied field provides customizations in blended courses and educational system

design in several ways.’

New learning environment does not only refer to the new locations or places that

a student learns but it also refers on how the student managed their behavior toward the

12
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

new learning environment. According the Glossary of Education and Reform, 29 August,

2014, ‘learning surroundings refers to the various bodily locations, contexts and cultures

in which students learn… since novices ought to the learning, the goal is to create a

whole environment for getting to know that optimizes the capacity of students to learn.’

According to Robert (2009) ‘A Good Home Learning Environment. Practical

recommendations and ideas for practitioners to implement in the setting and share with

parents. The home is the single most significant environmental element in enabling

youth to develop to trust, mindset and abilities that will assist them to study and have

interaction positively with the world’.

CHAPTER 3
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

RESEARCH DESIGN

13
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

In this study, the researchers want to determine the different coping mechanism

of grade 8 students from their New Learning Environment.

The most fit qualitative study is phenomenology since it aims to study the

experience of a person or a group; and according to Stanford Encyclopedia of

Philosophy, ‘phenomenology is the study of structures of consciousness as experienced

from the first-person point of view’.

RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT

The venue of this study is at the Sisters of Mary School Boystown, Inc. located in

Tungkop, Minglanilla, Cebu. The participants are located at the building two, third and

fourth floor. The researchers chose the grade 8 students as the participant because

they already experienced in coping to the new learning environment from their more

than one year of staying here.

PARTICIPANT

The researchers select the grade 8 students as their key informants of this study,

because the grade 8 students are staying here in Boystown for more than a year so

they already experienced the different learning style in this institution.

RESEARCH INSTRUMENT

The researchers used semi-structured interview in gathering or collecting data,

so that the researchers could get the information from the key informants. Since the

semi-structured interview is used, then it would be easier for the researchers to explain

14
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

and give follow-up questions. The following questions would be answered by the

selected grade 8 students.

1. How would you describe the new learning environment here in the Sisters of

Mary School Boystown?

2. What is your performance in school?

3. What are the difficulties that you encountered in dealing with your new learning

environment?

4. What did you do to cope up with those problems?

5. Does your new learning environment really affect your performance academically

especially in grade? Cite examples of the effects.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

Applying the basic moral of the school, we first ask permission from our dearest

principal that she may allow us to gather data from our grade 8 key-informants for the

success of our research.

The researchers will begin the data gathering through making questionnaires.

We would make this every study time on weekdays. The answers of the selected key-

informants would be recorded through note-taking. Lastly, we will analyze the gathered

data and interpret it.

CHAPTER 4
DATA PRESENTATION AND ANALYSIS

16
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

New learning environment gives a lot of good effects especially in academic

performances, one of these is good grades. If a student is optimistic no matter what

learning environment brings. This is proved by one of our participants. He said “ dako

ang akong grado kay bisag unsay distraction kay maningkamot gihapon ko nga

modako ang akong grado.” (I have good grades because even there are distractions

still, I persevere to have good grades.)

New learning environment motivates a student to study well especially when their

learning environment is conducive for learning such as, silent study time, clean

environment and others. In fact, one of our participants proved this by saying,

“naganahan ko’g study kay hilom kayo during study time ug dili gubot ang mga

gamit.” (I am motivated to study because the things are in order and it is very silent

during study time.)

In some case the students find it hard to study the lesson discussed by the

teachers in some factors. As one of our participants said, “di ko ka-focus ug study

tungod kay saba ug distractive ang uban nakong dormates.” (I cannot focus on

studying because of the noise and distraction of my dormates.)

One respondent said, “low grades can really affect my mood and can change

my study habits.” In this statement, low grades have negative impact but the teachers

and the sisters are not responsible in that situation since it depends on the students on

how they will manage their studies to achieve higher grades.

Other participants said, “nag-encourage nako para makasabay ko sa mga

maayo sa among classroom.” (it encourages me, how to be more competitive with

17
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

others in the classroom.) in which the new learning environment makes him to be more

competitive with his top performing classmates. Which means that the new learning

environment makes his study challenging which is supported by another respondent

who said, “challenging man gud ang environment diri” (the environment here is

challenging).

“Di na ko maulaw sa klase kay kung mag-ulaw-ulaw ko sa klase basin

mabagsak ko sa P.T. or mga activity” (I am not anymore shy because if I will be shy

there’s a tendency that I will fail in P.T. or any activity) This is what one participant said.

Here we could come to a conclusion that the new learning environment enhance his

confidence in dealing to a certain activity which might affect his grades.

CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

SUMMARY:

18
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

This study was conducted to determine the different effects of new learning

environment in the academic performances of the Grade 8 students in the Sisters of

Mary School – Boystown, Inc, (S.Y. 2018-2019) on how they adopted to it and their

challenges in adopting it

The researchers purposively chose the top performing and the low performing

student of Grade 8 as the subject of the study.

Through semi-structured interview, the researchers found that the students find it

hard to adopt the new learning environment due to the difficulties they encountered

such as distraction and noise of their fellow students during study time, some of them

are losing their determination to study because of getting low grades, and instead of

studying they just think that they will just get low grades.

Some of them also faced difficulties in dealing with new learning environment but

they were able to persevere and continue to study their lessons no matter what are the

distractions made my others. Some also can focus on studying because of the

surrounding well organized that lead them to have good grades. Getting high grades are

also gained by some of the students because they challenge themselves to be

competitive as their classmates are also competitive.

In a certain family or group, we cannot really avoid of having or being with those

shy people. Those students who are shy really need to develop their self-confidence,

and it affects to their academic performances. Some students adopted the new learning

environment through developing their self – confidence in order not to fail in their

performance task or some group activity. And that lead them to have good grades.

19
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

CONCLUSION:

Based on the research done, the researchers found out that there are positive

and negative effects of new learning environment to the academic performances of the

Grade 8 students. In dealing with new learning environment, most students have

difficulties to study because of distraction and noise and that, if they will have a test,

they will be failed. Then there will be a tendency that they will get low grades. Indeed, if

they got low grades, it may fall them to discouragements. They will not be interested in

studying anymore. And that, the researchers concluded that getting low grades can lost

the interest of the students to study.

There are also students who got high grades because of new learning

environment. They challenge themselves to those students who are top – performing

students. That is how are they adopted the new learning environment; through

challenging themselves to get high grades. Some are doing their review study the

lesson discussed by the teachers, no matter what are the distractions. They made it

because of their determination to study properly, to have good grades. The researchers

concluded that some are getting motivated by their fellow students to study properly and

their willingness to study properly instead of getting irritated of some distraction.

Those students who are shy, they adopted the new learning environment.

through developing their self – confidence. Because of being afraid of failing in

Performance Task and some group activity, they need to have this self – confidence in

order for them not to fail. With that, the researchers concluded that the students are

making ways to adopt the new learning environment and to work for all the difficulties

they encountered.

20
EFFECTS OF THE NEW LEARNING ENVIRONMENT TO THE GRADE 8 STUDENTS

Some students excel because they belong to a family who has an organize

things that enhanced them to study properly. It really tells us that if the things that are

proper and organized, there is really good effects with it. One of those is they can study

properly that lead them to have good grades.

RECOMMENDATION:

The researchers want to recommend these following persons that they may help

and contribute to the future students in coping with the new learning environment:

 We would like to recommend to the school administrator (principal) to formulate a

new regulation that would later help the new Grade 7 students.
 Aside from the administrator, we would like to recommend to the subject teachers

and advisers to create lesson plans which may critically help the students in

coping with the school rules and at the same time complying with the given

module.
 The mother – sisters are very crucial in molding the students. So, we recommend

to them to constantly monitor the students and help them in coping by guiding

them to follow rules efficiently.

 Lastly for the future Grade 7, we would recommend to them to cooperate to

those who are higher than them that they might cope and adopt the new learning

environment in small span of time.
