Nokia is one of the earliest leading mobile industry as we have known. Nokia
provided phones in our country in a very large scale since then. Starting with their bulky
but very durable phones until now where they were able to still compete in the android
market. We all remember our first nokia phone and feel nostalgic about. It has been a
shared joke among people that old nokia phones are considered to be indestructible.
Mobile phones back then were used only as a mode of communication through texts or
through calls. Well sometimes we make use of our phones as alarm clocks too. Of
course none of the communications will be established without the connection provided
by telco companies. Today, we thought that nokia stayed only being a phone industry.
But instead of being defeated by time, Nokia strived and ventured to other scopes of
work. Now, Nokia is one of the equipment providers of telco companies. They provide
microwave transmission machines to telco companies. They also lead a group of
research and development to ensure that they provide the most efficient equipments by
improving the designs to produce more bandwidth and faster data transfer. GMA
networks incorporated is also one of the top broadcasting station in the Philippines. I
guess no person with a television set would not know of GMA. Through its years of
service, GMA has provided the filipino people with information, entertainment, service,
and jobs. I can therefore say that GMA have been a part of our lives even though I
rarely watch television.
In our trip to nokia, we made a lot of roundtrips since we were able arrive at the
site in an earlier time. We were welcomed warmly at the site of nokia despite the
dampness of the environment. We did not enter the site’s transmission rooms where the
transmission equipment are placed because they are currently being used thus they are
continuing transmission. Going to those places would be dangerous to us due to the
radiation radiating from the machines and also it would be dangerous for the company
since we might trip a wire also and that may cause heavy problems to the site. Still we
are welcomed in a viewing room where we would learn about the history of Nokia and
how they work today. There we learned that Nokia was able to venture to other services
and not just continuing to provide mobile devices to people. Nokia was able to buy
different companies related to telecommunications and that helped expand expand their
company. Now they provide equipments in microwave communications for telco
companies. Not just they make mobile phones to serve as devices for digital
communications but also become providers for telco companies that allow the exchange
of data among mobile phone users. The Nokia staff told us about how they achieved
these feats. They also continue to develop more about mobile communications by
creating a group of people within their company that would operate research and
development. Their staff of brilliant engineers and technicians study, search for flaws,
and suggest improvements on the existing technologies in mobile communications.
Even though we were not able to enter the parallel site where there are the microwave
equipments, we were able to still visit through telepresence. They used a telepresence
and remotely controlled mobile robot to show us around the site that would give the
impression that we are actually walking inside the transmission rooms. After an
awesome lunch, we are able to visit the GMA broadcast station. Even with the rainy
climate, we are able to sustain are excitement since we may be able to meet GMA
actors there. Sadly, there were no tapings at the moment so we are not able to meet
any of the actors working there. The trip was still rewarding. We were able to visit
different studios which we only see on television. The studios may be disappointing to
see due to being in their bare form where there are no designs since some studio props
need to be replaced every time a new show is taped. Still the size is astonishing
because going there itself makes me realize that those studios were actually small
contrary on what would they really look like in the television screen. This is because
they use a specialized camera that would make the scenes more larger. We had a
picture taking on the 24hrs news studio since that studio does not require their props to
be removed every change of taping. We learned that some studios are ugly when there
are no special props placed since some studios require for props to be replaced every
taping of a different show. I also learned that Eatbulaga is not part of GMA but a partner
of it. The broadway belongs to Eatbulaga but since the two companies are partners,
they sometimes rent actors from each other with a corresponding payment of course. It
awesome to be on the place were many great newscasters have given us delicate
information. Also we were able to visit the barangay LS 97.1 broadcasting stations and
meet its DJs. The DJs were very welcoming and they even posed our pictures in their
barangay LS 97.1 facebook page.
To end, the trip was very cool. Even though I was not able to meet Mr. Willie and
acquire a jacket, I was still able to learn about the jobs of electronic engineers in the
GMA and Nokia sites. It is so shocking to learn that millions of pesos are earned
everytime there are television commercials. That explains the so many annoying
television commercials displayed in our television screens. The jobs of the engineers
and technicians were great. Keeping watch and making sure that there are no time lags
in broadcasting since a few seconds of downtime may cause great losses in the
company. In Nokia we learned that continually improving technology is a secret to a
success of a great company. Well it is fun to hear the saying that when you cannot beat
your competitors, then buy them. Nokia is a great display of an ever improving company
which always looks after the reliability and how would they serve well to their
consumers. This experience was very rewarding and enjoyable also because of the
food and company. I thanks Engr. Javel for providing us great sites for our field trip, and
also for being not so strict.
