CUTTINGS WEIGHING PROCEDURES AND REPORTING FOR WEST DESARU

DRILLING CAMPAIGN 2017

Systematically sample the drill cuttings return rate at the shale shakers, and use the data and trends,
along with torque & drag and ECD, to implement timely changes to drilling parameters and/or hole
cleaning practices in order to avoid problems caused by excessive drill cuttings build-up in the well
bore.
Procedure:
1. A drilled cuttings sample will be caught and weighed every 30 minutes while drilling and every
15 minutes while circulating (prior to wiper tripping or POOH). The mud logger will coordinate the
timing with the sample catcher and the mud logger will record the drilling parameters and pertinent
data in the Drilled Cuttings Measurement (DCM) Log Spreadsheet .
2. The drilled cuttings will be collected and weigh from a single shale shaker using a cutting
sampling tray suspended from a scale, and positioned at the shaker discharge. The relative flow
rate across the sample shaker and the shaker deck angle should be kept as consistent as
possible to ensure meaningful measurement. Avoid sampling just before, during, or immediately
after connections.
3. The shaker hand shall catch the drilled cuttings for one minute using the cutting weigher tray
(fabricated & installed recently on UMW Naga 5) and will pass this information to the Mud Logger
who will record it in the Cuttings Out Of Hole Monitoring Sheet (DCM). The cuttings out of hole
value will be automatically calculated in the log once the time and weight of the sample are
entered.
Note: cuttings out of hole can also be measured for 30 seconds, however the weight must be times by
2 to align with 1 minutes cuttings weight.

4. Record the Drilled Cuttings in kg/min, and display the data on a time log (Use actual bit
depth, Lag Depth is not necessary). Also, to assist in data analysis, the mud logger should
include his comments, as well as input from the mud engineer, relative to changes in drilling
parameters, formation changes, cuttings characteristics, shaker screen changes, sweeps, etc. on
the DCM spreadsheet.
5. The DCM is set-up such that it will automatically plot and graph the actual and theoretical drilled
cutting values (in MT) and other pertinent data, and the mud logger should report any
noticeable trends on the DCM Graph to the rig supervisor immediately.
6. Repeat steps 1 through 5 on a consistent basis while drilling. In addition, when circulating sweeps
(if sweeps are used) , the shaker man, with instruction from the driller and/or the mud engineer,
should catch a sample just before, during, and after the sweep to assist in monitoring sweep
effectiveness.

Roles and Responsibilities:

Drilling Fluids Supervisor
 Ensure the drilled cuttings weighing procedures are performed regularly while drilling
 Review and discuss the DCM and Graph routinely with the mud logger, the driller, and the
mud engineer
 Report drilled cuttings measurement (in KG/min) values on the daily drilling report
 Provide key learning's feedback to the drilling engineer.
 Ensure that materials are available for an adequate back-up of cuttings sampling trays,
scales, and associated hardware for all rigs

Drilling Engineer
 Review and analyze the DCM Logs and Graphs daily, and make recommendations as
deemed necessary
 Provide continued assessment of the procedures, data quality, reporting, and the overall
effectiveness of the cuttings weighing process
 Recommend changes and improvements as necessary to refine the cuttings weighing
process

Mud Engineer
 Oversee the cuttings sample weighing process to ensure that procedures are being followed
 Ensure that the DCM Log and Graph is being filled-in accurately, completely, and in a timely
manner.
 Provide input to the mud logger as to the physical description of the cuttings in each sample.
Descriptions such as large, small, fine, ground-up, soft, mushy, hard, rounded, angular, etc.,
will assist in hole cleaning analysis.
 Review the DCM Log and Graph routinely and discuss with the driller and the rig supervisor,
making recommendations as necessary wrt mud rheology, etc
 Provide continued assessment of the procedures, data quality, reporting, and the overall
effectiveness of the cuttings weighing process
 Recommend changes and improvements as necessary to refine the cuttings weighing
process
Mud Logger
 Maintain the DCM Log and Graph
 Coordinate with the sample driller so that the driller can instruct the shaker man when he
should catch and weigh a cuttings sample
 Record data on DCM Log including drilling parameters, drilled cuttings descriptions, lithology,
MW and comments
 Notify the rig supervisor routinely of the DCM values, and immediately if there are any
noticeable trends on the DCM Graph
 Provide an electronic copy of the DCM Log and Graph to the mud engineer and drilling
engineer daily to be submitted with daily mud reports

Shaker Man
 Conduct or participate in a JSA for cuttings weighing with the Driller and the Assistant Driller
at the beginning of each tour
 Catch and weigh cuttings samples using cuttings sampling trays and scales on the rig
 Inform the mud logger of sample weight (kilogram/min) and time (minutes and seconds) to
catch the sample (typically one minute)
 Remove the cuttings sampling tray away from the shaker after sampling, and clean and store
appropriately
