CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the study

Pechay , brassica rapa is a popular table vegetable in the Philippines. Also known

as snow or Chinese white cabbage. It is consumed as raw and cooked. Ideally, it is taken

raw to prevent loss of its nutritional value when heated.

Organic and Inorganic Fertilizers are essential for plant growth. Organic fertilizers

have been used for many centuries where Is chemically synthesized inorganic fertilizers

were only widely developed during the industrial revolution. Inorganic Fertilizers has been

estimated that almost half the people on the earth are currently fed as a result of artificial

nitrogen fertilizer.

Fertilizer is a substance added to a soil or land to increase its fertility. There are two

kinds of fertilizer. There is organic and inorganic fertilizer. Organic fertilizer are fertilizer

derived from animal matter animal excreta and vegetable matter naturally occur organic

fertilizer that includes animal waste (manure) . A chemical (synthetic) fertilizer that

releases nitrogen quickly into the soil compared to organic fertilizer such as manure which

release nitrogen more slowly as it decomposed.

Fertilizer is essential element for the successful plant growth and fertilizer are good

source of nutrients that may be lacking in the soil. However too much of anything is not a

good thing. Using the correct amount of fertilizer is important to optimize the production

of crops. Since many chemical/inorganic fertilizers are concentrated and very soluble, it is

easier to apply too much and damage your plants. If you apply too much fresh, non-
composted manure, you can damage your plants as well, because some manures contain

harmful amounts of salts in addition to plant nutrients. Non-composted manures can also

be a source of weed seeds.

Organic fertilizers release nutrients only when the soil is warm and moist, which

tends to correspond with your plants’ times of greatest need. However, they rely on soil

organisms to break down organic matter, so nutrients are released more slowly than they

are from inorganic fertilizers. This slow-release method reduces the risk of nutrient

leaching, but it takes time to supply nutrients to plants.

According to FACT SHEET PHILIPPINE agriculture plays a significant role in the

Philippine economy. Involving about 40 percent of Filipino workers, it contributes an

average of 20 percent to the Gross Domestic Product. This output comes mainly from

agribusiness, which in turn accounts for about 70 percent of the total agricultural output

(CIDA-LGSP, 2003).

Civilization as it is known today could not have evolved nor can it survive, without

an adequate food supply" -Norman Borlaug (the father of Green revolution)

Statement of the problem

This study aims to the determine the effect of fertilizers to the growth of plants.

Specifically, this study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the effects of using inorganic and organic fertilizer in the growth of

plant?

2. What are the effect of inorganic and organic fertilizer to soils fertility?

3. What are the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer to the production of

crops?
Significance of a study:

This study aims to provide sufficient information of the effects of organic and

inorganic fertilizer in the field of farming. This study will beneficial to the following

individuals.

The outcome of this study will be beneficial to the farmers. Wherein they can be

more knowledgeable about using organic and inorganic fertilizers in applying to their

plants. Also it will be there basis to be more productive with their work.

The result of this Research will be Beneficial also to the parents Who Have A

Business In terms Of Agriculture. It will help them To Identify whether what Is more

effective if it is Organic or inorganic In the Growth of their agricultural crops.

The outcome of this Research Will be useful for the Future Researchers Who Will

Be having a research also. It will provide them information with their study and to

strenghten their research paper.

Scope and Delimitation:

The main focus of this research is to determine what is the best between organic fertilizer

or inorganic fertilizer in planting. This study was conducted at Quezon National High

school To determine if what is more effective in terms of using organic or inorganic

fertilizers in applying to the growth of crops . This school year 2017/2018.

The research sample is composed of thirty (30) plant sample. 15 plants for organic

fertilizer and 15 also for inorganic fertilizer. The primary data gathering method used was

observation to determine the effectiveness of organic and inorganic fertilizer.

Definition of terms:

*Fertilizer – according to Merriam Webster defines fertilizer as a substance (such

as manure or a chemical mixture) used to make soil more fertile.

*Organic Fertilizer– are fertilizer derived from animal matter, animal excreta

(manure), human excreta, and vegetable matter (e.g. compost and crop residues).

*Inorganic Fertilizer- also known as mineral or commercial fertilizer, is

fertilizer mined from mineral deposits or manufactured from synthetic compounds.

*Agricultural Industry- which includes enterprises engaged in growing crops,

raising fish and animals and logging wood , encompasses farms, dairies, hatcheries, and

ranches.

*Soil-the upper layer of earth in which plants grow, a black or dark brown

material typically consisting of a mixture of organic remains, clay and rock particles.

*Pechay- better known as mapa cabbage or chinese cabbage in the united states.

-It’s a sub species of the plant having the scientific name BRASSICA

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

According to Raffa (2013) article entitled The effects of fertilizer on plant growth.

Fertilizer will have a positive effects on plant growth. And also a needs of plant includes

photosynthesis and nutrients . Just like people plants needs nutrients in able to survive .

Growing crops is an extremely important for sustaining life on earth because it is also

our needs we need food for our daily life in able to live in this world, some environments

of plants do not provide plants with all the proper nutrients which is why fertilizer are

added to soil because by providing plants with proper nutrition , we are able to allow

them to grow in the best conditions.

Holy(1980) soil as one of the main resources of the biosphere. According to

Okigbo (1991) soil is the important factor in the production of agricultural crops, forestry

and horticulture..

Govinda and Gopala (1971) states that fertile soil may be defined as on which has

Good supply of available plant nutrients throughout their growth . This definition describes

the quality and ability of soil to provide the essential elements in adequate amount and in

proper balance for the growth of specified crop or plant agriculture.

However we must consider the other needs of the plant we must consider the

reasonable amount or in suitable balance. We must consider the location of where the plant

is . The climatic zone which provide the soil moisture , light and heat that plants needed

also(DFID,2002) and (GSST,2006)

Soil sustainability is important in the matter of increasing agricultural output and

to achieve those we need. Soil management according to Wild(2003) states that sustainable

soil management can also maintain the reduce of the risk of output falling and minimize

the irresistible damage to the environment and degradation.
