ASSIGNMENT No. 1 Name ……………………………………

I.D. ……………………………………
Design of Tension Members
Date ……………………………………
Tutorial Sect. …...………………………..

Question No. 1

Figure 1 shows the connection of five members at a joint along the bottom chord of a truss.
Members 1, 2, 3, and 4 are in tension. Determine the tensile live load capacity T L at the service
load level for each of these members. The steel is G40.21-M350W and M22 bolts are used in
punched holes. If not shown, use standard gauge lines for the legs of angles. Assume the total
service load T consist of 30% dead load, 50% live load, and 20% snow load.

Question No. 2

The members of a truss in an industrial building meet at a bottom chord joint as shown in Fig. 2,
where the member end connections are welded to gusset plates. For the weld lengths shown,
determine the factored tensile load capacities Tf of tension members 1, 2, and 3. Assume G40.21-
M300W steel.

Question No. 3

Design a member for the top chord AB in the truss shown in Fig. 3 using a double C section
back-to-back. Use G40.21-M350W steel. The ends of member AB are welded to 18 mm gusset
plates. Horizontal bracing is provided at the joints. Assume that the weld length L along both
sides of the channels at ends A and B is L=1.25d, where d is the depth of the C section. The
service loads are shown in Fig. 3.
