Daily Lesson Objective: The students will work in pairs to complete a Venn diagram comparing and contrasting the
central message, main characters, plot and setting of the Three Little Pigs and the True Story of the Three Little Pigs and
use contextual features of the text to support their understanding. The students will provide at least three key details to
compare and contrast in each of the three headings: The Three Little Pigs, Both, The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.

previous days lesson to compare and contrast the main characters, setting, plot and central message with the content of
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs.

Activity Description of Activities and Setting Time


Students will gather on the carpet at the front of the classroom. The teacher
will ask students to share and discuss the key details of The Three Little Pigs

Story read on the previous day capturing the plot, setting, main characters,

Teacher says: “Today you will work with a partner and use the sticky notes
from yesterday’s reading and the ones you will write today to complete a

Pre-reading: Students will be shown the cover of The True Story of the Three
Little Pigs and asked to share their observations of what might be different
about this version of the story. Students will make predictions based on the
illustration on the front cover. Teacher says: “Do you think that A. Wolf’s
version of the story will be similar, different, or the same as the original
story?” Teacher then gives instructions for students to cup their ears to make
pig ears when they hear something in the text that is similar to the original
story and make pointed wolf ears when they hear details in the text that are

During Reading: Teacher will read text aloud to students. Teacher pauses
during reading to check for understanding as students recognize key details
that are similar and different.
After Reading: Teacher asks students to turn and talk with a partner to share
one detail that was the same and one that was different from the original

Students will be given access to texts, in digital, print and in
English and Spanish formats. Students who are having
difficulty remembering or recording key details from the texts
can have the text reread to them in a small group setting or
independently. Students who finish early will be given the
option to compose a letter addressed to either “A. Wolf” or
the third pig and stating an opinion as to why they believe
their side of the story.
Materials/Technology:
The True Story of the Three Little Pigs by A. Wolf, as told by Jon Scieszka. Smartboard, Whiteboard, Chart paper and
markers, Sticky notes for all students, Venn diagram activity sheets for paired groups.
