GENERAL ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

PROFESSOR

A. (i) An eminent scholar with Ph.D. qualification in the discipline concerned/relevant


discipline and published work of high quality, actively engaged in research with evidence of
published work with a minimum of 10 publications as books and/or research/policy papers.

(ii) A minimum of ten years of teaching experience in university/college, and/or experience


in research at the University/National level institutions/industries, including experience of
guiding candidates for research at doctoral level.

(iii) Contribution to educational innovation, design of new curricula and courses, and
technology-mediated teaching learning process.

(iv) A minimum score as stipulated in the Academic Performance Indicator (API) based on
Performance Based Appraisal System (PBAS) set out in the UGC Regulation
(www.ugc.ac.in).

OR

B. An outstanding professional with established reputation in the relevant field, who has made
significant contributions to knowledge in the discipline concerned/relevant discipline (to be
substantiated with credentials).

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

(i) Good academic record with a Ph.D. Degree in the discipline concerned/relevant discipline.

(ii) A Masters Degree with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale
wherever grading system is followed).

(iii) A minimum of eight years of experience of teaching and/or research in an


academic/research position equivalent to that of Assistant Professor in a University,
College or Accredited Research Institution/ Industry excluding the period of Ph.D.
research with evidence of published work and a minimum of 5 publications as books
and/or research/policy papers.

(iv) Contribution to educational innovation, design of new curricula and courses, and
technology-mediated teaching learning process with evidence of having guided doctoral
candidates and research students.

(v) A minimum score as stipulated in the Academic Performance Indicator (API) based on
Performance Based Appraisal System (PBAS), set out in the UGC Regulation
(www.ugc.ac.in).

The Ph.D. Degree shall be a mandatory qualification for the appointment of Professor and
Associate Professor.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce, Education, Languages, Law,


Journalism and Mass Communication

(i) Good academic record with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale
wherever grading system is followed) at the Masters Degree level in a relevant subject
from an Indian University, or an equivalent degree from an accredited foreign university.

(ii) Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National
Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC
like SLET/SET.

(iii) Notwithstanding anything contained in sub-clauses (i) and (ii) to this Clause, candidates,
who are, or have been awarded a Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the University Grants
Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D. Degree)
Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum eligibility
condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment as Assistant Professor or
equivalent positions in Universities/Colleges/Institutions.

(iv) NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for
which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted.

MUSIC AND DANCE DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) Good academic record with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale
wherever grading system is followed) at the Masters Degree level, in the relevant subject
or an equivalent degree from an Indian/Foreign University.

(ii) Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, candidates must have cleared the National
Eligibility Test (NET) for Assistant Professors conducted by the UGC, CSIR, or similar
tests accredited by the UGC.

(iii) Notwithstanding anything contained in the sub-clauses (i) and (ii) to this Clause,
candidates, who are, or have been awarded Ph. D. Degree in accordance with the
University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Ph.D.
Degree) Regulations, 2009, shall be exempted from the requirement of the minimum
eligibility condition of NET/SLET/SET for recruitment and appointment as
Lecturer/Assistant Professor or equivalent positions in Universities / Colleges /
Institutions.

(iv) NET/SLET/SET shall also not be required for such Masters Programmes in disciplines for
which NET/SLET/SET is not conducted.
OR
A traditional and a professional artist with highly commendable professional achievement
in the subject concerned, who should have:

(a) Studied under noted/reputed traditional Masters and has thorough knowledge to
explain the subject concerned;

(b) A high grade artist of AIR/TV; and

(c) Ability to explain the logical reasoning of the subject concerned and adequate
knowledge to teach theory with illustrations in that discipline.

BUSINESS MANAGEMENT / ADMINISTRATION DISCIPLINE

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

(i) Consistently good academic record with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a
point scale wherever grading system is followed) in Masters Degree in Business
Management / Administration / in a relevant Management related discipline or first class
in two year full time PGDM declared equivalent by AIU / recognized by the AICTE /
UGC.
OR
First Class graduate and professionally qualified Charted Accountant / Cost and Works
Accountant / Company Secretary of the statutory bodies concerned.

(ii) Ph.D. or Fellow of Indian Institute of Management or of an Institute recognized by AICTE


and declared equivalent by the AIU.

(iii) A minimum of eight years experience of teaching / Industry / Research /Professional at


managerial level excluding the period spent for obtaining the research degree.
OR
In the event of the candidate being from industry and profession, the following
requirements shall constitute as essential requirements:

1. Consistently good academic record with at least 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in
a point scale wherever grading system is followed) in Masters Degree in Business
Management / Administration / in a relevant Management related discipline or first
class in two year full time PGDM declared equivalent by AIU/ recognized by AICTE /
UGC.
OR

First Class graduate and professionally qualified Charted Accountant / Cost and Works
Accountant / Company Secretary of the statutory bodies concerned.

2. A minimum of ten years experience of teaching/ industry / research / profession, out of


which five years must be at the level of Assistant Professor or its equivalent excluding
the period spent for obtaining research degree. The candidate should have Professional
work experience which is significant and can be recognized at national / international
level as equivalent to Ph.D. and ten years managerial experience in industry /
profession of which at least five years should be at the level comparable to that of
Lecturer / Assistant Professor.

(iv) Without prejudice to the above, the following conditions may be considered desirable:

a) Teaching, research, industrial and / or professional experience in a reputed organization.

b) Published work, such as research papers, patents filed/obtained, books and / or


technical reports, and,

c) Experience of guiding project work /dissertation of PG / Research Students or


supervising R&D projects in industry.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) Essential:

1. First Class Masters Degree in Business Management / Administration / in a relevant


management related discipline or first class in two year full time PGDM declared
equivalent by AIU / accredited by the AICTE / UGC.
OR
2. First Class graduate and professionally qualified Charted Accountant / Cost and Works
Accountant / Company Secretary of the statutory bodies concerned.

(ii) Desirable:

1. Ph.D. in Business Management / Administration / management related discipline

2. Teaching, research, industrial and / or professional experience in a reputed organization;

3. Papers presented at Conferences and / or published in refereed journals.

EDUCATION DISCIPLINE

PROFESSOR

(i) A Masters Degree in Arts / Humanities / Sciences / Commerce and M. Ed. each with a
minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system
is followed),
OR
M. A. (Education) with 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever
grading system is followed) and B.Ed. each with a minimum of 55% marks (or an
equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed);

(ii) Ph. D. in Education; and

(iii) At least ten years of teaching experience in a University Department of Education or


College of Education of which a minimum of five years at the M.Ed. level with published
work in the area of specialization.

ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR

(i) A Masters Degree in Arts / Humanities / Sciences / Commerce and M. Ed. each with a
minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system

OR
M. A. (Education) and B. Ed. each with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade
in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).

(ii) Ph. D. in Education; and

(iii) At least eight years of teaching experience in a University Department of Education or


College of Education, with a minimum of three years at the M.Ed. level and has published
work in the relevant area of specialization.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A Masters Degree in Arts / Humanities / Sciences / Commerce and M. Ed. each with a
minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system
is followed).
OR
M. A. (Education) and B. Ed. each with a minimum of 55% marks (or an equivalent grade
in a point scale wherever grading system is followed).

(ii) Besides fulfilling the above qualifications, the candidate must have cleared the National
Eligibility Test (NET) conducted by the UGC, CSIR or similar test accredited by the UGC
like SLET/SET.

COMPUTER SCIENCE DISCIPLINE

PROFESSOR

Please refer to General Essential Qualifications for the post of Professor.

CRIMINOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A Masters Degree with 55% marks in M.Sc. Cyber Forensic Science and Information
Security or M.Sc. Forensic Science or M.C.A., or M.Sc. Information Technology or M.E.
Computer Science and Engineering or M.E. Electronics and Communication with
specialization in Network Security or Cyber Crime or Cyber Forensics or Information
Security. In addition, the International Certificate in Cyber Forensics and Information
Security and related areas is preferable.

(ii) Candidates possessing 55% marks in M.E. Computer Science and Engineering or M.E.
Electronics and Communication with specialization in Network Security or Cyber Crime
or Cyber Forensics or Information Security and Candidates with International

Certifications in Cyber Forensics and Information Security and related areas are exempted
from the qualifying NET Examination.

POLYMER SCIENCE DISCIPLINE

PROFESSOR

Please refer to General Essential Qualifications for the post of Professor.

Specialisation in Polymer Science. Proven teaching experience in any area in the


subject of Polymer Science. Proven research experience/contribution in any area in the field of
advanced Polymer Science, in terms of publications and major research projects
completed/sanctioned.

ANATOMY DISCIPLINE

PROFESSOR

(i) M.Sc. with Ph.D. or D.Sc. in Anatomy/M.S. with Ph.D. or D.Sc. in Anatomy.
(ii) Five years of teaching and research experience as Reader/ Associate Professor in a
Medical/Dental/Research Institution.

ENDOCRINOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

A first or high second class post-graduate degree with M.Phil. and Ph.D. degree in the
subject and a pass in State/UGC/CSIR/National level screening test. Three years of teaching/
research experience with publications of research papers in accredited national and International
Journals.

GENETICS DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

A first or second class in M.Sc. in any branch of life sciences with


State/UGC/CSIR/National level screening test or Ph.D. in Human Genetics/Molecular
Genetics/Quantitative Genetics with Biostatistics edge/Computational Biology/Genetic
Epidemiology with not less than three years of teaching / research experience.

MEDICAL BIOCHEMISTRY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A first or second class post-graduate degree with State/UGC/CSIR/National level


screening test qualification or Ph.D. in the subject concerned/related interdisciplinary
subject with not less than three years of teaching / research experience.

(ii) Besides, candidates with a Post-graduate Degree in Medical, Veterinary and other
professional faculties in the subject concerned with not less than three years of teaching /
research experience are also eligible.

MICROBIOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A first or second class post-graduate degree with State/UGC/CSIR/National level


screening test qualification or Ph.D. in Microbiology/related interdisciplinary subject with
not less than three years of teaching / research experience.

(ii) Besides, candidates with a Post-graduate Degree in Microbiology in Medical, Veterinary


and other professional faculties in the subject concerned with not less than three years of
teaching / research experience are also eligible.

NATIONAL CENTRE FOR ULTRAFAST PROCESSES

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

M.Sc. Chemistry/Physics/Photonics/Biochemistry with a minimum of 55% marks with


State/UGC/CSIR/National level screening test qualification.

Desirable: Ph.D. in Chemistry/ Physics/Photonics/Biochemistry.

PATHOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

M.B.B.S with M.D. Pathology / Ph.D. / D.Sc. in the subject concerned.

PHARMACOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL TOXICOLOGY DISCIPLINE

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A first or second class post-graduate degree in Pharmacology, Environmental Toxicology


with not less than three years of teaching / research experience.

(ii) In the case of Post-graduates in the Faculty of science, State/UGC/CSIR/National level


screening test qualification or Ph.D. Degree in the subject concerned or a related inter-
disciplinary subject is essential.

PHYSIOLOGY DISCIPLINE

PROFESSOR

A first or second class post-graduate degree with Ph.D. in the subject concerned/related
inter-disciplinary subject with not less than 10 years of post-graduate teaching and
research experience and a proven academic record with creditable publications and
evidence for active independent research guidance.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR

(i) A first or second class post-graduate degree with State/UGC/CSIR/National level


screening test qualification or Ph.D. in the subject concerned/related interdisciplinary
subject with not less than three years of teaching / research experience.

(ii) Besides, candidates with a Post-graduate Degree in Medical, Veterinary and other
professional faculties in the subject concerned with not less than three years of teaching /
research experience are also eligible.

UNIVERSITY LIBRARIAN

(i) A Masters Degree in Library Science /Information Science/Documentation with at least


55% marks or its equivalent grade of B in the UGC seven point scale and consistently
good academic record.

(ii) At least thirteen years as a Deputy Librarian in a University Library or eighteen years
experience as a College Librarian.

(iii) Evidence of innovative library service and organization of published work.

(iii) Desirable: M.Phil./Ph.D. Degree in Library Science / Information Science /


Documentation / Archives and Manuscript-keeping.

UNIVERSITY DIRECTOR OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

(i) Ph.D. in Physical Education.

(ii) Experience of at least ten years as University Deputy Director or fifteen years as University
Assistant DPEs/College (Selection Grade).

(iii) Participation in at least two national/international seminars/conferences.

(iv) Consistently good appraisal reports.

(v) Evidence of organizing competitions and conducting coaching camps of at least two week
duration.

(vi) Evidence of having produced good performance teams/athletes for competitions like
State/National/Inter-University/combined Universities etc.

ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT THE UGC - ACADEMIC STAFF COLLEGE

The qualification shall be the same as applicable to the post of Assistant Professor in
Arts, Humanities, Sciences, Social Sciences, Commerce, Education, Languages, Law,
Journalism and Mass Communication

PERCENTAGE EQUIVALENCE OF GRADE POINTS FOR UGC SEVEN POINT
SCALE:

It is hereby clarified that wherever the University/College/Institution declares results in grade


points on a scale of seven, the following mechanism shall be referred to ascertain equivalent
marks in percentage:

For avoidance of doubt, it is hereby clarified that:

1. If Class or Division is not declared at the Bachelors or Masters Degree levels, an aggregate
of ≥ 60% or equivalent Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is to be considered as
equivalent to First Class.
2. In respect of CGPA awarded to the candidates on a 10 Point Scale, the Table of equivalence
shall be provided by the University concerned for determining the Class obtained by them as
per (1) above.

SCALE OF PAY:

1. Professor Rs.37400-67000 with an AGP of Rs.10000

Directly recruited Professor shall be fixed at Rs.43000 in the above pay band with an
AGP of Rs.10000

2. Associate Professor Rs.37400-67000 with an AGP of Rs.9000

Directly recruited Associate Professor shall be fixed at the minimum of the above pay
band Rs.37400 with an AGP of Rs.9000

3. Assistant Professor Rs.15600-39100 with an AGP of Rs.6000

Candidates who satisfy the above requirements may download the application form from

Demand Draft for Rs.500/- towards the cost of application. The Demand Draft shall be drawn
in favour of the ‘The Registrar, University of Madras’, payable at Chennai. The fee prescribed
for SC/ST candidates is Rs.250/-.

Candidates from abroad may attend the interview for the above posts through Video Conference
on payment of an additional fee of US $500 either by Demand Draft drawn in favour of “The
Registrar, University of Madras” along with the application form or by payment made in swift
A/c “SBININBA”-University of Madras A/c No.01100060111”. Such candidate should furnish

Contributory Pension Scheme

As per G.O.Ms.395 Finance [Education] Department, dated 16th September 2003


adopted by the Syndicate at its meeting held on 13th November 2003 for its employees and
amendments/rules and regulations issued/amended by the Government of Tamil Nadu from
time to time, Contributory Pension Scheme shall be applicable to the newly recruited teachers
of the University.

SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS

A candidate should have obtained a Bachelors Degree from a recognised


University, under 10+ 2 + 3 system.

If the candidate is applying for more than one post he / she has to submit separate
application for each post.

The period of time taken by the candidates to acquire M.Phil. and/or Ph.D. shall
not be considered as teaching / research experience to be claimed for appointment to the
teaching positions.

RELAXATION

1. A relaxation of 5% shall be provided from 55% to 50% of the marks, at the Masters
level for the SC/ST, and differently-abled categories (physically, visually and other
differently-abled) for the purpose of eligibility and for assessing good academic record.

2. A relaxation of 5% shall be provided from 55% to 50% of the marks to the Ph.D. degree
holders who have passed their Masters degree prior to 19th September 1991.

COMMUNITY CERTIFICATE

Permanent Community Card Certificate obtained from the under mentioned authorities
on or before the last date for submission of Application Form is necessary for candidates
claiming reservation benefits.

N O T E:
