Bahuvrīhi practice 1: Simple genitive and instrumental bahuvrīhis and their

analysis.
1. caturbāhur Hariḥ

• x = catur:- four (numerical)


• y = bāhu:- hand (masculine noun)
• z = Hariḥ:- 1st vibhakti singular, masculine, proper noun.

vigrahavākya: catvāraḥ bāhavaḥ yasya sa tathoktaḥ ||

(i) The so-called whose hands are four.

2. unmīlitalocanā Mahāsvetā

• x = unmīlita = opened widely (past passive participle)


• y = locana = eye (neuter noun)
• z = mahāsvetā = the great white = 1st vibhakti, singular, feminine noun.

vigrahavākya: (a) unmīlite locane yasyā sā tathoktāḥ ||


(b) unmīlitāni locanāni yayā sā tathoktāḥ ||

(i) The so-called whose both eyes are widely open.


(ii) The so-called by whom eyes [of the people] are widely open.

3. kṛtakṛtyo muniḥ
• x = kṛta = done (past passive participle)
• y = kṛtya = what ought to be done (kṛ+ kyap: potential (future) passive participle)
• z = muniḥ = a Sage, an ascetic, a person whose senses have quieten (1st vibhakti,
masculine, singular, noun)

vigrahavākya:- kṛtaḥ kṛtyaḥ yasya sa tathoktaḥ ||

(i) The so-called whose what ought to be done has been done.

4. dīghabāhur Janārdanaḥ

• x = dīrgha = long (adjective)


• y = bāhu = hand (masculine noun).
• z = Janārdanaḥ = Vishṇu or Kṛṣṇa (1st vibhakti, masculine, singular, proper noun)

vigrahavākya: dīghau bāhū yasya sa tathoktaḥ ||

(i) The so-called whose both hands are long.


5. piṅgalekṣaṇā niśācarāḥ

• x = piṅgala = yellow; radish brown (adjective)


• y = ikṣaṇa = eye; look; view (noun, neuter)
• z = niśācarāḥ = fantom; a night ghost (1st vibhakti plural, masculine noun).

vigrahavākya: piṅgalāni ikṣaṇāni yesāṃ te tathoktāḥ niśācarāḥ ||

(i) The so-called fantoms whose eyes are radish brown or yellow.

6. baddhāñjalir bhṛtyaḥ
• x = baddha = joined (ppp, adjective)
• y = añjali = palm together (in reverence) (masculine, noun)
• z = bhṛtyaḥ = domestic servant (1st vibhakti singular, masculine noun).

vigrahavākya: baddhaḥ anjaliḥ yasya sa tathoktaḥ ||

(i) The so-called whose palms are joined together (in reverence).

7. sarvaviṣyaṃ jñānaṃ
• x = sarva = all (pronoun; determiner)
• y = viṣaya = domain; subject; issue (masculine noun)
• z = jñānaṃ = knowledge; wisdom (1st vibhakti singular, neuter noun).

vigrahavākya:- sarvaḥ viṣayaḥ yasya tat tathoktaṃ ||

(i) The so-called whose domain is everything.

8. jitendriyo yogī
• x = jita = conquered; won (ppp)
• y = indriya = faculty; organ (neuter noun)
• z = yogī = the practitioner (1st vibhakti, masculine, singular, noun).

vigrahavākya:- jitaṃ indriyaṃ yena sa tathoktaḥ ||

The so-called by whom the faculty has been conquered.

9. namramukhī kanyā
• x = namra = soft or polite (adjective)
• y = mukha = mouth (neuter noun)
• z = kanyā = girl (1st vibhakti, feminine, singular, noun).

vigrahavākya:- namraṃ mukhaṃ yasyā sā tathoktā ||


(i) The so-called whose mouth is polite.

10. pauruṣabhūṣaṇo rājā


• x = pauruṣa = manly (adjective)
• y = bhūṣaṇa = embellishment; ornament (neuter noun)
• z = rājā = king (1st vibhakti singular, masculine noun).

vigrahavākya:- pauruṣaṃ bhūṣaṇaṃ yasya sa tathoktaḥ ||

The so-called whose ornament is manly??

11. sthiropadeśā Pārvatī


• x = sthira = firm; stable; constant (adjective)
• y = upadeśa = teaching; explanation; advise; instruction (masculine noun)
• z = Pārvatī = 1st vibhakti singular, feminine, proper noun.

vigrahavākya:- sthiraḥ upadeśaḥ yasyā sā tathoktā ||

(i) The so-called whose instruction is stable.

12. gṛhītavidyāḥ śiṣyāḥ


• x = gṛhita = gained; received (ppp adjective)
• y = vidhyā = knowledge (feminine noun)
• z = śisyāḥ = students (1st vibhakti plural, masculine noun)

vigrahavākya:- gṛhitā vidhyā yaiḥ te tathoktāḥ ||

(i) The so-called by whom the knowledge is gained or received.
