Learning Objective(s):
1. The students will learn solutions for problems that exist in and outside of school
2. The students will be able to manage time effectively in order to regularly attend
school.

attending school.
Materials:

Procedure:
1. The students will complete a pre-test that asks students to describe ways in
2. The lesson should begin by reading a short article about the importance of
attendance in the workplace. Located on the back, “Steps for Maintaining Good
attendance at school.
3. Students will take turns reading paragraphs, and then the counselor will go over
the 5 steps (pulled from Fremont Unified School District) that students should do
regularly.
4. The school counselor should explain that all of the 5 steps are great ideas, they
5. The counselor will then ask students what might keep a student from attending
class regularly.
a. Students should feel free to call out answer while the counselor writes
6. The students should then get into a group of 3 to discuss ways that can lead the
students to come closer to fulfilling all 5 steps. The students should work
together to create at least 2 items per step that can help a person achieve that
step.
7. The student will then share their strategies, and students not speaking should be

b. Body Scan
c. Individual Counseling
9. The class will end with students preparing goals about their own attendance and
including strategies for how they will complete them. This will act as their post-
test.
10. The students will also take a perception survey to provide information about the
Process Data: All 11th graders, 423 students, will complete the lesson over the course of 3 days in
their ELA classes.
Perception Data: Perception data will be completed using a pre- and post-test assessing students’
abilities to find and use strategies that improve attendance. Students will also assess the lesson using a
perception survey at the end of the lesson.
Outcome Data: 78% of 423 11th graders will regularly attend classes.
Follow Up: Teachers will provide information about students that regularly miss class or are not
paying attention during class. These students will be pulled into small groups that can receive further
help. These small groups should help improve the overall attendance for the Junior class from 76% to
81%.
