Deep web;Dark web

The dark web is a part of the internet that isn't indexed by search engines. You've no doubt
heard talk of the “dark web” as a hotbed of criminal activity — and it is. Researchers Daniel
Moore and Thomas Rid of King's College in London classified the contents of 2,723 live
dark web sites over a five-week period a couple of years ago and found that 57 percent host
illicit material.

You can buy credit card numbers, all manner of drugs, guns, counterfeit money, stolen
subscription credentials, hacked Netflix accounts and software that helps you break into
other people’s computers. Buy login credentials to a $50,000 Bank of America account for
$500. Get $3,000 in counterfeit $20 bills for $600. Buy seven prepaid debit cards, each with
a $2,500 balance, for $500 (express shipping included). A “lifetime” Netflix premium account
goes for $6. You can hire hackers to attack computers for you. You can buy usernames and
passwords. But not everything is illegal, the dark web also has a legitimate side. For
example, you can join a chess club or BlackBook, a social network described as the “the
Facebook of Tor.”

Tor
All of this activity, this vision of a bustling marketplace, might make you think that navigating
the dark web is easy. It isn’t. The place is as messy and chaotic as you would expect when
everyone is anonymous, and a substantial minority are out to scam others.

Accessing the dark web requires the use of an anonymizing browser called Tor. The Tor
browser routes your web page requests through a series of proxy servers operated by
thousands of volunteers around the globe, rendering your IP address unidentifiable and
untraceable. Tor works like magic, but the result is an experience that’s like the dark web
itself: unpredictable, unreliable and maddeningly slow.

1. When you use TOR to access the Deep Web you become completely anonymous.

2.The Deep Web is the largest increasing category of information on the Web.

3.The Deep Web contains nearly 550 billion individual documents.

4. 95% of the Deep Web is publicly accessible information.

5. More than half of the Deep Web content resides in topic-specific databases.

6. The size of the Deep Web is 500 times larger than the Surface Web.

7. The currency used on the deep web is called Bitcoin.

8. The Deep Web contains 7.500 terabytes of information.

9.Normal currency can't be used on the Dark Web. Users regularly depend on bitcoin and other
cryptocurrencies to make market transactions. These are especially popular because they're virtually
untraceable.

10.Stolen credit cards are often sold on the Dark Web. Other pirates will use stolen credit cards to buy
gift cards and then sell them for less than their worth.

11. Sadly, one of the darkest parts of the Dark Web is human trafficking. Disturbing pictures of people
are taken, and these people are sold as property to the highest bidder. Authorities note that the Dark
Web is only a small portion of the trafficking that takes place in the world.

12. In a more bizarre twist, even child spirits are sold on the Dark Web. In Thailand and other eastern
countries, people believe voodoo masters can capture the spirits of babies that have been aborted or
miscarried and made to do their bidding. People buying these spirits want them to do stuff for them or
make their lives better.

13. Things get even more disturbing with the Cruel Onion Wiki. Supposedly on it are scantily clad women
crushing small animals under their feet. The site has been shut down frequently but always finds a way
to reappear.

14. In recent years, the Dark Web has been a big seller for illegal drugs especially among students. Even
with the recent bust of Silk Road, the biggest supplier of illegal drugs, sales have been strong and
growing.

15. Your identity is on sale on the Dark Web. Passwords for individual bank accounts can range up to
$160, and your entire identity could only cost around $1,200.

16. In the much darker parts of the Dark Web are places called "Red Rooms." Essentially, they're video
feeds of people in a room being tortured. It's said people will pay to watch them. While there hasn't
been much evidence they exist, a few cases have cropped up.

What is deep web?

Over the centuries, when the technology became advanced, humans built machines
capable of diving to the depths of the oceans. That’s how we were able to discover the
remains of RMS Titanic. The search engine crawlers do the same work as done by the
explorer submarines. They dive into the internet and take a note of whatever they find.

We might have found Titanic, but there is a lot to discover in the bottomless oceans.
Similar is the case of the search engine crawlers, they haven’t identified various parts of
the World Wide Web, and we call it the Deep Web.

For instance, the search engines won’t be able to access the servers and websites hosting
data about some government-led secret alien mission. But the deep web isn’t as
mysterious as it sounds. A private network, tagged as deep web, can be right next to your
house. It’s just the internet that isn’t within reach of standard search engine crawlers. For
instance, the network maintained by some paid streaming service. It is a type of deep web
or hidden web. Obviously, the search engines won’t be opting for a monthly subscription
to index the catalog of such websites.

What is Darknet?
Contrary to deep web, Darknet is better known to the people. It is an encrypted network
built on top of the existing internet, and specific software or tools are required to access
the darknet. It is possible, conventional protocols used on the internet might not work on
the darknet.

Darknet provides anonymity to the users. One such darknet is Tor or The Onion Router.
You require the Tor browser to enter into the Tor’s network.

Tor can be used to visit everyday internet websites, but it also has numerous hidden
websites and services which we can’t be accessed on the regular internet. Tor powers
them using its protocol known as Tor Hidden Service Protocol. And the websites limited
to the Tor network have a special .onion address. Due to this, Tor’s darknet is also
known as onionland.

Friend-to-Friend (F2F) networks are another kind of darknet. In this case, two familiar
people communicate with each other directly over the internet. They might want to share
some file over a P2P connection. Such networks, not accessible by other people, can be
encrypted or password protected. So, only the concerned people have the access.
