Classic Sandwiches

The sandwich is an important food in our lives. It is simple, portable, and

elaborate. But how was it invented? Why was it named as Sandwich?
What did it look like in traditional way? It is interesting to look at the
answers of these questions.

People started eating sandwich since 1st Century. People put meat mixed nuts
and herbs between two pieces of bread. And In the Middle Ages, people
placed cooked meats and vegetables in thick slices of stale bread called
'trenchers'(para.2).

According to Grosley(1766), the name 'sandwich' came from John Montagu,

the 4th Earl of Sandwich who ate “a bit of beef, between two slices of toasted
bread” at a gambling table. The historian Rodger (1994) agreed that the Earl of
Sandwich was the real inventor of the sandwich, but he thought the Earl ate it
at office’s desk instead of a gambling table. The word ‘sandwich’ became very
popular after that.

Weaver (2003) states that the sandwiches became some intimate evening
supper foods, teas, and picnics, then an ideal fast food which could be sold in
train stations. (p. 235-6)

According to Mrs. Webster (1844): ”Cut, and spread neatly with butter, slices
of biscuit, placing between every two pieces, a very thin slice of tongue.
