Placement Test for STAT

Statistics (STAT) students will take an assessment test comprised of the following themes presented at
the undergraduate level:

1. Calculus 1 (univariate) and 2 (multivariate; without divergence and curl applications)

2. Linear Algebra
3. Probability
4. Statistics

Details regarding these themes in both tracks follow.

1. Calculus 1:

Typical topics included are limits, derivatives, anti-derivatives, and definite integrals. The classes of
functions used to develop these concepts are: polynomial, rational, trigonometric, exponential, and
logarithmic. Topics also include methods of integration (by parts, substitutions, partial fractions,
approximation of integrals and improper integrals), infinite sequences and series, convergence tests,
power series, Taylor polynomials and series, and Taylor's Remainder Theorem.

Possible Reference Books:

Calculus 2:

Typical topics included are differential, integral and vector calculus for functions of more than one
variable. Topics also include line and surface integrals as well as divergence and curl applications.

2. Linear Algebra:

Topics include systems of equations, vector spaces, basis and dimension, rank of a matrix, determinants,
eigenvalues and diagonalization, similarity, and positive definite matrices, orthogonal and unitary
matrices and transformations, orthogonal projections.

3. Probability:

Topics include: basic probability models; combinatorics; random variables; discrete and continuous
probability distributions.
