Busy as I was with the cartoon exhibition I missed the birthday of the most famous
rodent in the world on 19 September 1928 Mickey Mouse made his first appearance on
screen in the film Steam Boat Willie -the first film that combined simultaneously
picture and sound.
The world wide popularity of the mouse has caused endless discussions as to what he
really stands for, about his ideology and his influence on children. Some say that
Mickey shows an innocent face which hides his main objective to transform childhood
dreams into merchandize or that Mickey speaks the international language of
consumerism and cultural imperialism. Some one else will say that he is a charming
blend of culture, politics and economics.
Whatever the case, I never really liked Mickey. A smart ass, too proper, a petite
bourgeois who, though he lives in a puritanical country (until not too long ago, at
least) he lives with Minnie out of wedlock and while he has no children, brother(s)
or sister(s) he has three nephews of unknown parents that live with him. As for a
steady job... well, he never had one and no one knows how he makes a living.
To make a long story short, me, I am a Goofy fan.

A funny story now. On the day of Mickey�s 31st birthday, 19 September 1959,
Disneyland did not allow entrance to the 1st Secretary of the Communist Party and
Premier of the USSR Nikita Khrushchev, on an official visit to the USA.
