8 Boustead Singapore Limited • Annual Report 2001

Corporate Profile
1828, a year to remember in Singapore’s corporate history, the year when a young Englishman,
Edward Boustead founded a Company that has survived and grown through wars, riots and political
upheavals, the birth pangs of separation and successive periods of recession and buoyancy. Trading
in natural resources, spices, coconut, tobacco, tin, tea and silk were the core businesses in the
early days when Boustead’s ships plied the China/Europe routes.

Over the years, many names and brands became synonymous

with the Company. These included CADBURY’s, JOHNNY
WALKER, HENESSEY, THOMAS COOK amongst others. The
Company itself grew and prospered.

By the 1900’s, the Company that had its roots in Singapore

had spread its wings all over South East Asia and Australia
and eventually back to the mother country, England.

Successive re-structuring resulted in the creation of separate entities in Malaysia, UK and Singapore,
carrying the same name, listed on their respective stock exchanges and all major corporations in their
own right. Today, the legacy of Edward Boustead continues in areas and businesses that he never
dreamed were possible.

BIH boasts a proud tradition of excellence in fired heater design and

implementation. R&D efforts are steaming ahead to revolutionise the way
companies design, manage and maintain fired heaters.

BIH’s Products
BIH design and supply the complete spectrum of fired heaters from natural draft vertical cylindrical
type with capacities as small as 5 MM BTU/Hr to large units complete with pre-heat systems up
to 1000 MM BTU /Hr. Skid-mounted modularisation is often adopted for off-shore applications
and difficult sites with poor logistics.

BIH’s Services
Our team of highly respected engineers are often called upon to modify existing units. Our services
include feasibility studies, design &/or project management services to:

• Increase Capacity of Existing Equipment

• Add Convection Section to a Radiant Heater
• Add Pre-heat system
• Upgrade Burners for Noise or Nox

Worldwide Network & Clientele

We service an international clientele through offices in the U.K.,
Spain, Singapore, Venezuela and the USA.

Boustead International Heaters (BIH)

Boustead International Heaters, better known as BIH, specialises in the design, manufacture and installation
of Direct Fired Process Heaters, waste heat recovery units and associated equipment for the oil and gas
industry. With over 150 senior man-years cumulative design and project management expertise, BIH
boasts an installed knowledge base of over 2,000 including some of the largest, most technically complex
and advanced projects ever constructed.

Computer-aided design using the latest 3-D software shortens the time taken from process requirement
finalisation to the completion of shop drawings where advanced project management techniques ensure
timely project completion. All QA procedures are duly accredited ISO 9001 by BSI and the latest European
Pressure Equipment Directive 97/23/EC.

Safety and Reliability

As the applications usually involve
hazardous and flammable products, human and
plant safety is of paramount concern in addition to
high efficiency and reliability.

All applicable API 1560, API 530 (ISO 13704 and

ISO 13705), NFPA, BS and TUV criteria are taken
into consideration in the design of the
heating systems and controls.

Relay-based controls have been replaced by advanced control

techniques utilising standard or fully redundant programmable
logic controllers approved to TUV AK4 or AK6 requirements
respectively. These enable fine-tuning of the control system to
maximise efficiency as well as guarantee high reliability, safety
and availability.

HMI and supervisory computers with full graphic process and

alarm management capabilities are available together with
interfaces to DCS, plant control systems or Maintenance
Management Systems. Historical trend data can be used for
analysis of heater performance.

Manned by multi-disciplinary
No project is too large or complex ; nor engineers of impeccable
any too small or simple. We succeed be- track record, BP prides itself
cause we provide a value added service on its ability to deliver high

It is our responsibility and concern to see this idea through

or to guide him through the maze ,to its final implementation
...and make that idea a viable reality.... in the shortest possi-
ble time and at optimal cost... while adhering to the highest
standards in respect of quality.

A brain storming session is a good place to start
