1. Students will be able to identify the identify the sections of the ACT and 
understand the formatting of the test 
2. Students will learn different test prep methods, including vocabulary and 
grammar prep to focus on and the best exam books to practice with 
3. Students will understand the type of writing on the writing section of the test, 
including what the essay prompts and sample responses look like 

Materials:

1. Powerpoint made by counselor- to include sections of ACT, sample questions,

sample essay prompts, sample essay responses, and test prep hints
2. Handouts of essay prompts and responses
3. Handouts with list of best books to utilize for ACT prep and lists of online resources
for vocabulary and grammar prep.
Procedure:
Students will be pulled from the first half of lunch during their VISA time to attend small
group. This will be done 2 consecutive days, which equals one hour altogether.

Day 1
1. Counselor will take a poll of which sections the students know are on the
ACT
2. Cousnelor will show a powerpoint that includes the sections and the amount
of questions on each section. Counselor will show students some sample
questions and have them work with partners to try to answer the questions
(1-2 minutes per question).
3. Counselor will go over the answers after each question and take a poll to
see who got which ones correct. Students who got correct answers will
explain to the group how they got these answers.
4. Counselor will review the best ways to prepare for the ACT, including the
best books to buy or rent and where they are available. Counselor will review
the types of vocabulary and grammar the students should be making
flashcard for and how to find the resources online (handout).

Day 2
1. Counselor will go over the writing portion of ACT (how much time allotted,
types of prompts, etc)
2. Counselor will read the different rubric scores/descriptions out loud
3. Students will use chart paper and markers to come up with what the score
entails in their own words
4. Counselor will hand out different essay samples ( one essay with score of 1,
one essay with score of 2, etc) and have students read each with a partner.
5. Students will discuss with partner which score they think their essay should
be and share with whole group
6. Counselor will display correct score and explain why it is that score.
7. Counselors and students will discuss any questions that remain about this
section.
 
 
  

Plan for Evaluation:​ How will each of the following be collected?   

Process Data​:
9 eleventh grade students- potential first generation college students  

Perception Data:
Needs Assessment Pre-Test:​ Students will circle from a list of topics related to the ACT 
that they would like to be discussed. 
ACT Pre-Test:​ Students will take a practice ACT test. 
ACT Post-Test:​ Students will complete another practice ACT test at the end of the small 
group meetings for the semester. 
Post-Group Feedback:​ Students will give feedback using an anonymous survey on the 
effectiveness of the group.  
   

Outcome Data:
Students ACT scores will be collected and compared to both ACT pre- and post-tests. 
  
The PSAT scores can also be compared to see general improvement in the comparable 
categories.  
 

Follow Up:
 
This group plan is part 2 of 5 sessions. The final follow up will be once the student 
receives their official ACT score. Counselors will pull them in to discuss score and if they 
meet the requirements for the college they want to attend. Counselor and student will 
come up with a plan of action for next year if student does not meet their goal.
