TITLE
One of the cheapest way of acquiring knowledge and information is through
reading. The Philippines’ rate in reading is rated at 66.33 percent from the National
Achievement Test (NAT) results in 2009. But the having this rate is still a low score sand
is only at the “near mastery level”. Having a low rate in the category which is “the true
backbone of most learning” as said in the article is quite disappointing. Since reading is
essential in getting into good jobs, in exercising the mind and its imagination, improves
memory, vocabulary and many more. But since then, the Philippines are using methods
or programs to improve the students’ skills in reading.
As the year 2019 approaches, people typically within our age are hard up on
allotting time to read books, articles, and other reading materials that serve as the very
backbone of most our learning. Especially that nowadays with the use of technology all
of the information that we may need is very accessible just by having a mobile device
that is connected to the internet. It is of paramount importance that even with the
existence of this kind of technology we still go back to the basic way of learning and that
is by reading. Taking the time to read and understand every detail, every concept and
basically everything that encompasses that material is very important in determining the
level of reading comprehension of a person because for a student as he or she goes up
the educational ladder it is usually required that as the level of difficulty increases the
student’s performance increases as well and does not decline or decrease. In our
country alone, the Philippines annually conducts National Achievement Tests (NAT)
administered to public schools that determines the reading skills of a student. Having
the skill to be good at reading enables a person to have advantage over any other
person because almost everything that we do requires us to use our reading skills like
for example when you are given a word problem in Mathematics you cannot just simply
derive the answer without having to read, analyze and understand the whole question.
That is why reading is basically the key to everything and it is just very heart breaking
and disappointing that people still need more practice and time to make the effort in
reading. One possible solution would be to give reading a decent amount of time and to
isolate it from other subjects because it takes real devotion and understanding to
achieve mastery. By making all of this possible there is a real chance that in the future
the Philippines would be able to produce extraordinary people that can face any
challenge given to them because they have more than enough knowledge and
understanding to execute any task given to them. Reading by simply being a subject in
school can turn people’s lives for the better and can forever develop into a lifetime habit
which actually means that students can inquire lifetime information and important
lessons in everyday life.
In conclusion, reading is an essential part of our lives. Reading, indeed is the key
to everything--the key to understanding, to learning, and most importantly, to success.
Reading has an impact on our overall being as it can shape who we are ultimately by
the way we understand, and the way that we derive meaning. This is ultimately why
reading is an important subject as without it, many would be considered illiterate. Indeed
reading is fundamental to function in today's society. Reading is vital in finding a good
job, it is how we discover new things--about ourselves and other people, it improves our
imagination and brings out our creativity, and it is fundamental in developing a good
self-image. With that being said, I believe that reading is a crucial part of learning and
that we cannot bring out our best selves if we don't learn how to read. As Rachel Anders
once said, the journey of a lifetime starts with the turning of a page.
