I started off my tasting with the 2008 Pinot Grigio, made from
grapes grown in the Los Alamos area of Santa Barbara County. I’ve
always enjoyed this wine from Per Bacco, and it could be assumed
that the pressure is on to make an excellent house Pinot Grigio worthy
for the bar at Café Roma. The 2008 Edna Valley Chardonnay
reminded me of the first Per Bacco Chardonnay I’d ever tried, thus
proving that the same philosophy is running through Craig’s wine-
making process today. Judging by the dense, commanding pour of the
2007 Arroyo Grande Valley Pinot Noir, I knew I was onto something
special here. This is classic Central California Burgundy, with ample
weight, heavy fruits, and refreshing cool climate acidity. “2007 was a
great vintage for Pinot,” Grace said. Onto the Dionysus, with its hand-
some packaging and even darker colors and flavors, with an earthy,
savory complexity that comes on like a sleek black Benz out of the
showroom. It’s a Las Vegas style Pinot Noir, to be drunk alongside a
280 dollar Wagyu tasting flight at CraftSteak. Since Craig’s wine-
making resume includes a stint at Alban Vineyards in Edna Valley, it’s
no surprise that the winery is sold out of its Syrah and Petite Sirah,
though the 2005 Mani Cabernet Sauvignon is a true value and a fine
way to finish up the tasting. “Mani means hands in Italian,” Grace
pointed out, “and Craig’s three girls’ hand prints are on the label. It’s
the house Cabernet at Café Roma.”
Per Bacco Cellars is located at 1850 Calle Joaquin, San Luis Obispo
and is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information,

To many, the pairing of wine and beets may seem counter intuitive at first but
after some examination it is clearly a combination that makes sense. First the
obvious: beets and red wine both depend on natural pigments in the vegetable, or
grape, that give each their lively red color. Furthermore, both red wine and beets
are a source of antioxidants, organic compounds known to provide health bene-
fits, although they are less abundant in beets than in red wine. On the other hand,
beets and red wine differ in one significant, yet complementary way. Beets have
excellent detoxification properties, which could be of service on those occasions
when red wine’s potential to intoxicate has been realized.

ROBERT HALL WINERY

California’s 2010 Golden State Winery
By Kim Murphy-Rodrigues
Discover the Essence of Paso Robles,™ with a visit to Robert Hall
Winery. Tucked in the rolling hills near the region’s eastern gateway,
Robert L. Hall has realized a 40-year dream in building a winery and
hospitality center which has become a landmark for the Paso Robles
community.
Robert’s interest in the wine business was sparked during a family
vacation to France in the late ’70s. As he traveled throughout the
Rhône valley, Robert was captivated by the lifestyle and tradition of the
family wine estates he visited. Shortly after, Robert began developing
his idea for a premium-producing vineyard and winery and ventured
west with the goal of visiting each of California’s wine appellations to
explore optimum growing conditions for the
production of premium wine grapes, specifically
the Rhône varieties he enjoyed so much. In the
early-’90s, Robert and Margaret discovered the
perfect terroir in the Paso Robles AVA. Featuring stewards of the land, both the winery and vine-
soil rich in nutrients, coupled with warm days and yard practice natural resource conservation.

State Fair Wine Competition. Known as the
oldest and most prestigiously judged wine
competition in North America, this year’s event included nearly 3,000
wines from over 600 wineries, which were all blind tasted. Robert
Hall Winery’s ten wine entries garnered five “Best of Class” honors and
placed the winery in the position of being this year’s golden recipient
– a first time honor for a Central Coast winery. Robert L. Hall feels the
honor highlights the “quality of the fruit and winemaking in Paso
Robles” and is rewarded by the attention it is bringing to “all wineries
in the Paso Robles AVA.” Robert Hall wines are crafted by winemaker
Don Brady who joined the winery in 2001. A Texas native, Don was
recognized by his industry peers in 2006 by receiving the “Winemaker
of the Year” honors. Don’s goal in crafting Robert Hall wines is “to
bring the elements of the fruit from the Hall Ranch to the winey to
capture the exceptional color and flavor that is the essence of Paso
Robles.” While Robert Hall Winery is most known for their Cabernet

Riverbench Vineyard Celebrates Officially 'Going Green'

Santa Barbara Wine Country Vintner Receives Official Sustainability Certification
Riverbench Vineyard and Winery is green – and they’re making it
official. “Sustainability takes into account the bigger picture,” says
Laura Mohseni, General Manager of Riverbench. “It’s functioning in
ways that don’t take away the potential for future generations to enjoy
an economic, environmental and even social benefit. We started in
2007 by renovating a 1926 ranch home on the vineyard property to
become our tasting room. We feel very strongly about reducing our
carbon footprint, so we considered electricity use, water conservation
and waste.”
And it didn’t end there. Riverbench uses only recycled paper prod-
ucts for the offices and considers the environment in packaging their
wines. Mohseni reports that this not only reduces waste, but saves
them money most of the time, so it’s just good common sense.
There was, however, an even bigger consideration: Riverbench’s
420 acres of vineyard. Jim Stollberg, the Vineyard Manager, prepared
audits and paperwork for the Sustainability in Practice (SIP) Program,
one of the first certification programs in the country to recognize envi-
ronmental and human resource conservation throughout California.
The program, created by the Central Coast Vineyard Team, involves a

‘Holiday Weekend in
Wine Country’ to Offer a
Respite from Holiday Stress
Local merchants, vintners, hoteliers & restaurateurs showcase
Santa Barbara Wine Country’s small-town holiday spirit!
“The Holiday Season” conjures up images of happy shoppers
strolling by beautifully decorated store windows, smiling and jolly
Santas, twirling dreidels, crisp days and nights filled with song, and
friends and families coming together for a glass of cheer and a festive
meal. In reality, it can mean crowded malls, full parking lots, clogged
freeways and shops that all seem to carry the same things. No wonder
“Bah Humbug” is heard more than once. Here in Santa Barbara Wine
Country, the streets are decorated with twinkling lights, people gather
as a community for tree lightings and caroling, the eight days of
Hannukah are truly a joyous Festival of Lights, and the stores, restau-
rants, hotels and wineries are full of good, holiday cheer.
And one weekend during the holiday season epitomizes that spirit.
From December 2nd through 6th, wineries will be holding Open
Houses, local boutiques and shops will offer their unique ideas for gifts
(and often with discounts!), restaurants will create holiday meals and
hotels will offer special incentives to spend a long weekend. There will
be tree lightings, parades, menorahs, concerts, Santa, Aebleskivers and
holiday dinners. The entire community will come together to cele-
brate the Holiday Season. Enjoy streets without traffic, quaint family
owned shops instead of an impersonal crowded mall and an opportu-
nity to get back that small-town, festive holiday spirit.
Bring the whole family or whisk your partner away to wine country
for a weekend to remember. Why not give the gift of cherished
memories for the holiday season? Holiday Weekend in Wine Country
makes planning your trip easier than ever before.

A Wine Garden?
Outdoor Entertaining in a Whole New Way
A woman’s passion for gardening and her love for outdoor enter-
taining led to her invention, “The LEDGE.” A beautifully handcrafted
wrought iron table that easily attaches to garden pots and urns,
elegantly combining function and beauty.
Sharon Duncan, the inventor of “The LEDGE,” has always had a
passion for gardening and entertaining. Throughout the years Duncan
has hosted many events at her home in the California foothills. While
her desire was to create a botanical paradise in her sitting areas, she
found herself with limited table space. “While the sitting areas were
beautifully surrounded with lush pots and urns, I often found myself
and my guests holding our wine glass and appetizer plates, the need
for more table space was apparent.” For Duncan, eliminating her
garden in her sitting areas was not an option, thus, “The LEDGE” was
created.
Duncan created her business “Legendary Patio and Home Designs”
excited about the patio and home décor items they have planned for the
future. “I have always loved decorating, but often found difficulty in
finding “that” piece that completes the picture in my mind, so I ended
up making it.” With the creation of “The LEDGE,” also came an inspi-
ration of more ideas. “I am very excited about our future products.”

Unique, elegant and functional … it’s the perfect gift idea! Tall urns can be
