Squire
I am Carlum Amico and work as a squire, my surname is a medieval
name from Messina, Sicily. I chose it because it is my surname. In both
medieval and current Italian it means friend. It is currently mainly in
used in Sicily and also a bit in other southern Italian regions.
I might live in a manor or a castle, depending on the wealth of the
knight I am serving. Castles in Sicily were usually built with rocks in top
of very high mountain cliffs. Sicily in the medieval times was
predominantly Christian so both castles and manors usually had
private chapels. Manors also are made out of rocks and there is usually
at least one per each village to keep order between the peasants and
serves. Manors could be as small as a normal house or bigger than some
castles, of course this can depend only on the knight’s wealth and how
close he was to his lord. I spent most of time at the knight’s house
cleaning or taking care of his fighting equipment and rarely went to
demonstrate my skills so the house is an important place to me. The
rooms that the knight (so also me) owns are usually at least one living
room, rooms for me, him and other serves living in the house,
bathrooms, kitchen, chapel, small prison (depending), garden and much
more depending on the type, kingdom and time it was built in.
My daily life is a bit like a student at university, I live with my knight
from when I am 14 and at that time my job is helping my knight do
house related small things like washing the dishes and cleaning his
room. When I grow up and am around 16 I start my training, who is
really hard for me to finish. If I pass my training and the lord declares
me a knight then I am going to also own a squire, but later on in time
new knights were not needed so you actually had a small chance of
becoming one. My job is really hard, the knight could come back all
covered with blood from a battle and I would need to clean him,
sometimes the knight could die in front of my eyes. If he died then I will
need to go back to the village and keep on living my normal life. I would
not accompany my knight in his battles most of the time but when I did I
carried the flag, this is the most honourable job I could get, this would
only happen if I get the knight’s trust. If my knight was poor and had no
slaves than my job would be really bad, I would need to clean the toilets
and the whole manor as well as doing the jobs regarding my owner’s
job.
My coat of arms is yellow with a blue stripe in the middle of it
obliviously, it also has a black bird on the top right corner. It is very
simple, this probably symbolizes that my family isn’t that wealthy
