Section A: Inorganic Chemistry-4 (30 Lectures)
UNIT-1: Organometallic Compounds : (18 Lectures)
Definition and Classification with appropriate examples based on nature of metal-carbon bond (ionic,
s, p and multicentre bonds). Structures of methyl lithium, Zeiss salt and ferrocene. EAN rule as
applied to carbonyls. Preparation, structure, bonding and properties of mononuclear and polynuclear
carbonyls of 3d metals. p-acceptor behaviour of carbon monoxide. Synergic effects (VB approach),
MO diagram of CO can be referred to for synergic effect to IR frequencies.
Applications of Grignard reagents, organolithium, organoaluminium, organotin compounds in organic
synthesis. Their Industrial, agricultural and biological applications.
Preparation, properties, bonding and applications of Metal alkyls and aryls of Li, Al, Mg.
Metal ethylene complexes, the nature of bonding in metal carbonyls.
UNIT-2: Bio-inorganic Chemistry: ( 12 Periods)
Essential and trace elements in biological processes, Biological functions of Na, K, Mg, Ca, Fe, Cu, Zn
, Mn, and P. Role of metal ions present in biological systems with special reference to Na+, K+ and
Mg2+ ions: Na/K pump. Role of Mg2+ ions in energy production and chlorophyll. Role of Ca2+ in
blood clotting, stabilization of protein structures and structural role (bones).
Metalloporphyrins with special reference to haemoglobin and myoglobin, their biological functions,
Cooperative effect. Biological role of alkaline earth metal ions with special reference to Ca2+,
Nitrogen fixation and nitrogenase.
UNIT-3: Hard and Soft Acids and Bases & Non-Aqueous Solvents:
Classification of Acids and bases as hard and soft. Pearson’s HSAB principle and its limitations, acid-
base strength and hardness and softness. Symbiosis, theoretical basis of hardness and softness –
electronic, bonding theory, Drago- Wayland theory. Electro negativity and hardness and softness,
donor- acceptor number.
Non-aqueous Solvents:
Physical properties of a solvent, types of solvents and their general characteristics. Reaction in non-
aqueous solvents with reference to liquid NH3 and SO2. Properties of Solvated electrons.
Section B: Organic Chemistry-4 (30 Lectures)
UNIT-4: Polynuclear and heteronuclear aromatic compounds:
Polynuclear hydrocarbons: Synthesis, Properties, electrophilic substitution and structure eluciditation
of Naphthalene and Anthracene.
Heterocyclics: Synthesis, properties, basic character, molecular orbital pictures and aromatic
characteristics of Furan, Pyrrole, Thiophene, and Pyridine.
Condensed Heterocyclics: Synthesis of Indole by Fische - Indole Synthesis and Iso-quinoline by
Bischler-Napieralaski synthesis, Quinoline-Skraup synthesis, reactions, structure eluciditation.
UNIT-5 : Synthetic Polymer:
Addition or chain growth polymerization: Free radical and ionic Vinyl polymerization, Ziegler – Natta
polymerization. Condensation or Step growth polymerization: Polyester- Preparation and uses of
Dacron and Glyptal . Polyamides – Preparation and uses of Nylon-66 and Nylon-6 (Perlon). Phenol
formaldehyde resins- Preparation and uses of Novolak and Bakelite, Urea formaldehyde resins.
UNIT-6: Chemistry of Natural Products:
Alkaloids and Terpenes: Sources, classification, characteristics, isolation and general method of
structure elucidation of alkaloids. Structure eluciditation and synthesis of Nicotine.
Sources, classification, characteristics and isolation of Terpenes, Isoprene rule, special Isoprene rule
and Constitution and synthesis of Citral.

3. Preparation of following complexes and measurement of conductivity:
(i) Tetraamminecarbonatocobalt (III) nitrate
(ii) Tetraamminecopper (II) sulphate
(iii) Potassium trioxalatoferrate (III) trihydrate
(iv) Sodium trioxalato ferrate (III), [Na3 (Fe (C2O4)3]
(v) Cis- and Trans- bisoxalato diaqua chromate (III) ion
And others possibly by green methods
4. Compare the conductance of the complexes with that of M/1000 solution of NaCl, MgCl2 and LiCl3.

elements using Green Reagents, identification of functional group, melting point, specific test and
preparation of one derivative. Separation with saturated NaHCO3 solution or Water

protons, Position of signals - shielding and deshielding of protons, Peak area and proton counting ,
Chemical shift, units, scales, δ values of different types of protons, factors affecting δ., Splitting of
Signals - Spin – Spin Coupling ,coupling constants, magnetic equivalence of protons, Applications of
NMR Spectroscopy. Interpretation of PMR spectra of ethanol, acetaldehyde, ethyl bromide, n-propyl
bromide, isopropyl bromide, 1, 1-dibromoethane, 1, 1, 2- tribromoethane, etyl acetate, toluene,
benzaldehyde and acetophenone.
