Benefits of a Multi-Device Classroom
Individualized Experiences

- When you have multiple devices in a

classroom you can easily adjust the activities
for your students or choose activities that
change based on student responses.

- The option to personalize activities can make it

easier to accommodate modifications from
IEP’s and the needs of other students.

Benefits of a Multi-Device Classroom
Special Needs

- If you have multiple students in your classroom that

have special learning needs, having multiple
devices can help you help them. For example, if you
have a student who needs information read aloud,
they could use the computer to hear articles while
the gifted student works on another computer
doing further research on a topic.

- The more devices you have, the more students you

could help.

Benefits of a Multi-Device Classroom
Participation

- Especially when you get closer to the 1:1 ratio

of students to devices, you can see an increase
in participation.

- Students are more likely to participate and

engage in activities when they have their own
device versus having to watch other students
do it on one device.

Benefits of a Multi-Device Classroom
Instant Assessments

- Multiple devices in the classroom provide the teacher

to use apps to ask questions and gauge
understanding of the class as a whole. The collected
data can be projected for the class to view as a whole
and see where they have strengths and weaknesses.

- This would not be possible in a single device

classroom. The more devices you have for students to
participate in the assessments, the more accurate your
results will be.

Benefits of a Multi-Device Classroom
Expense

- After the initial cost, a lot of money could be saved by

utilizing the devices. Textbooks could be downloaded
as e-Books at a lower cost. Simulations can be viewed
and manipulated online instead of purchasing all
materials for in-class demonstrations. Students typing
notes can save on pencils.

- There are so many things that you would not have to

purchase because digital devices can take care of that
need.

Drawbacks of a Multi-Device Classroom
Expensive

- Many schools do not have the funding to

purchase and maintain technology for
each student, meaning students would
have to share their device.

- Not having enough computers for

students could be a drawback as teachers
would be limited to only assigning work
that could be done in pairs or groups.

Drawbacks of a Multi-Device Classroom
Inappropriate Use of Technology

- Teachers would not be able to keep their

eyes on the screens of 20+ students to
make sure they are on staying on track
and being productive.

- Students might use the devices

inappropriately, or get easily distracted.

Drawbacks of a Multi-Device Classroom
Wi-Fi Issues / Concerns

- Laptops or tablets will need to use WiFi, unless the

program has been downloaded. Wifi issues could be
frustrating and would hinder students from
completing lessons/ activities in a timely manner.

- Having multiple devices connected to one Wifi

network could make this drawback worse as the
WiFi could become slower or even completely crash
with too much activity.

Drawbacks of a Multi-Device Classroom
Charging Issues / Concerns

- Laptops, tablets and mobile devices all need

charging in order to function properly and
for any duration of time.

- If a student forgets to charge their device or

a charger does not work properly it may
affect their, or another student's, ability to
use it the next day.

Drawbacks of a Multi-Device Classroom
Cheating

- It is easier than ever to communicate with others

through technology. There are plenty of
advantages to communicating by technology, but
a drawback could be cheating.

- Students have the ability to share answers as

quick as they are able to share ideas, which is not
the type of collaboration teachers want in the
classroom.

Examples / Practices
Mobile Devices - Justification

- Allow for all students to interact and engage in the

virtual world at once, making it easy for all
students to participate in an activity at once.
- Not purchased by the school, which makes use of
the student’s own technology in the classroom.
- Great for teacher-controlled interactions such as
Kahoot or Quizlet games, but also can be used for
individual research.

Examples / Practices Original assignment:
Reading a poem on a printed
handout
Mobile Devices - SAMR Model

- S- Mobile devices serve as a direct substitute for the printed handout as students read the poem
on their mobile device.

- A-Mobile devices serve as a direct substitute for the printed handout as students read the poem
on their mobile device, and also allow them to click on and define certain words.

- M- The poem read on the mobile device will allow for comments and additional markings to be
made to the text and shared with other students to add additional notes and ideas about the text.

- R- Instead of reading the poem, students will google multiple images to compile them into a
collage that they feel best represents the theme of the poem.

Examples / Practices
Smart Tables - Justification

- Smart Tables are just like Smart Boards, instead

multiple tables can be placed around the room allowing
multiple students to interact with the tables at once.
- The tables also are placed making it accessible for all
students and physical disabilities to use.
- Smart Tables encourage more simultaneous
interactions between students allowing for group work
to take place while using technology. They are also
easily monitored by teachers.

Examples / Practices Original assignment: Practicing
vocabulary on hand written flash
cards.
Smart Tables - SAMR Model

- S- The Smart Table serves as a direct substitute for hand written flash cards as students study
vocabulary on quizlet.

- A-The Smart Table serves as a direct substitute for hand written flash cards as students study
vocabulary on quizlet, and also allowing them to “star” cards that they find difficult and playing
matching games with the vocabulary terms.

- M- The quizlet set played on the Smart Table can shared with other students, allowing them to
interact with another student’s vocabulary cards to test their knowledge of those words.

- R- Instead of learning vocabulary on Quizlet, students demonstrate their understanding of their

vocabulary words by creating a Prezi personation with accompanying images to describe the
words.
