Situation
Information
- Background chemicals
There were four chemicals leaking at the scene consist of Toluene, Sodium Borohydride and
Sodium Hydroxide solution, Polyurethane Coating, and Tetrachloroethylene 99.9% minimum
(Perchloroethylene).
1. Toluene UN1294
- Chemical formula: C6H5CH3; C7H8
These signs and the word “Danger” were mentioned on the label. The word “Danger” show
that this chemical can cause great severe hazard, and the signs represent flammable, affect
respiratory, and irritant respectively.
** 50 meters away from the leakage
- Properties
- Colorless liquid with a sweet, pungent, benzene-like odor.
- BP: 231.1° F at 760 mm Hg
- MP: -94.9 °C
- Hazards
- The central nervous system (CNS) is the primary target organ for
toluene toxicity for acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term)
exposures.
- symptoms: fatigue, sleepiness, headaches, and nausea
- causes irritation of the upper respiratory tract and eyes, sore throat,
dizziness, and headache
2. Sodium Borohydride and Sodium Hydroxide solution UN3320
- Chemical formula: NaBH4 (Sodium borohydride) & NaOH (Sodium hydroxide)
The sign on the picture indicate how severe the chemical effects on specific area. From the
picture below, it shows that this chemical highly affect on health (Extreme danger) and it is
unstable if heated, but it is not flammable at all. In addition, its specific hazard is corrosive.
** 50 meters away from the leakage
- Properties
- An off-white clear non-aqueous liquid with a slight hydrocarbon odor.
- Hazard
- Burns the skin, eyes and mucous membranes
- TOXIC; inhalation, ingestion or contact (skin, eyes) with vapors, dusts
or substance may cause severe injury, burns or death. Reaction with
water or moist air may release toxic, corrosive or flammable gases.
Reaction with water may generate much heat that will increase the
concentration of fumes in the air.
- Fire will produce irritating, corrosive and/or toxic gases
3. Polyurethane Coating UN1950
- Chemical formula:
These signs and the word “Danger” were mentioned on the label. The word “Danger” show
that this chemical can cause great severe hazard, and the signs represent flammable, affect
respiratory, and irritant respectively. So, it has the same effect as Toluene.
** 100 meters away from the leakage
- Properties
- Flammable liquid and vapor
- Hazard
- May be fatal if enters airway or ingested
- Causes skin irritation or allergic reaction
- Causes serious eye irritation
- Causes breathing difficulties if inhaled
4. Tetrachloroethylene 99.9% minimum (Perchloroethylene) UN1897
The color labels on the top right corner of the label means the same as Sodium Borohydride
and Sodium Hydroxide solution. Therefore, this chemical is stable; does not affected by
heat, and not flammable. However, it could cause hazardous effects on health. The toxic
sign with number 6 indicate that it is really dangerous.
** 50 meters away from the leakage
- Properties
- colorless liquid
- Hazard
- short-term:
- Breathing
- Dizziness
- Drowsiness
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Lack of coordination
- Irritation of eyes and respiratory tract
- Skin contact
- Irritation
- Redness and chapping
Long-term:
- Long-term exposure
- Mood
- Memory
- Attention
- Reaction time
- Vision
- Cancer
Resources
- Uses: These equipments are all essential use for work safely in workplace. Selecting
the PPE resources appropriately can reduce the hazard in laboratory. The purpose
are to provide and to identified the various types of resources.
How to clean
1. Evacuate area to 100m, may be fixed based on wind direction and speed (pic.)
2. Covers all of the drains in the area of 100m surrounding.
3. To isolate and stop chemicals to spread or leaking, using socks to arrange around.
4. Using hazmat plug kit to seal the hole, leaking ignition source.
5. Use mat to cover the chemicals to stop them from heating or evaporation.
6. Follow cleaning instruction by the following step required for each chemical (shown
below).
Addiotional Part;
1. Toluene
- Wear full PPE
- Keep out from heat, and flammable equipment.
- Keep away the barrier (ignition source), and stop leaking.
- Avoid chemical to flow to sewer.
- Absorb with an inert material (sand, earth) and put spilled material in an
appropriate waste disposal.
3. Polyruethen Coating
- Wear PPE
- Use vermiculite, dry sand, earth to absorb and placed into container.
- Dispose of in accordance with applicable local, state and federal regulations
4. Tetrachloroethylene
- Air out and isolate the spilled area
- Remember to wear appropriate PPE
- Recover the liquid as much as possible (into the container, barrel)
- Neutralized the solution by alkaline material (soda ash, lime), then picked up
them by absorb with inert material (such as sand, earth).
- NOTICES not to use combustible materials.
- Dispose of in accordance with applicable local, state and federal regulations
