Self-Study Problems
MCQ1: A meter stick on a horizontal frictionless table top is pivoted at the 80-cm
mark. A force is applied perpendicularly to the end of the stick at 0 cm, as shown
in the figure to the right. A second force (not shown) is applied perpendicularly
at the 100-cm end of the stick. The forces are horizontal. If the stick does not move,
the force exerted by the pivot on the stick:
(A) must be zero Answer (B):
(B) must be directed opposite to and have magnitude | | + | | To prevent from rotating, and
must have the same orientation
(C) must be in the same direction as and have magnitude | | −
 the force exerted by the pivot on
(D) must be directed opposite to and have magnitude | | −
the stick is directed opposite to and
(E) must be in the same direction as and have magnitude | | +
has magnitude | | + | |
MCQ2: A spring of force constant 45 N/m is used to pull a block along a horizontal surface at constant speed.
The spring is observed to stretch 12.0 cm while supplying this force. How much force is applied?
(A) 5.4 N
(B) 6.2 N
(C) 7.8 N
(D) 9.8 N

MCQ3: Three identical ideal springs (X,Y,Z) are arranged as shown. When a 4.0-kg mass is
hung on X, the mass descends 3.0 cm. When a 6.0-kg mass is hung on Y, the mass descends:
(A) 2.0 cm Answer (E):
(B) 4.0 cm For spring X:  X
4 ∙ 9.81/0.03 = 1308 N/m
(C) 4.5 cm
(D) 6.0 cm For ZY combination: 2
(two equal springs in series)
6∙ .
(E) 9.0 cm  2 Y 2 = 0.090 m = 9.0 cm

MCQ4: A force of 5000 N is applied outwardly to each end of a 5.0-m long rod with a radius of 34.0 cm and a
Young’s modulus of 125 × 106 N/m2. The elongation of the rod is:
(A) 0.0020 mm Answer (D):
(B) 0.0040 mm ∆ ∆

= 5.5 × 104 m = 0.55 mm
(C) 0.14 mm ∙ ∙ .

(D) 0.55 mm
(E) 1.42 mm

MCQ5: Two supports, made of the same material and initially of equal length, are 2.0 m apart. A stiff board with
a length of 4.0 m and a mass of 10 kg is placed on the supports, with one support at the left end and the other at
the midpoint. A block is placed on the board a distance of 0.50 m from the left end. As a result the board is
horizontal. The mass of the block is:
(A) zero Answer (E): Both supports have the same Young’s modulus and length
(B) 2.3kg  after adding the block, to keep the board horizontal, they contracted
(C) 6.6kg by the same amount d and produce the same force on the board. It means
(D) 10 kg that (see free-body diagram). According to equilibrium
(E) 20 kg conditions, ∑ 0: 2 0 (1)
∑ 0: 0 or (2)
By substituting N in (1) with (2) we get: 2 = 20 kg

SP1: In Figure to the right suppose the length L of the uniform bar is 3.00 m
and its weight, Wbar is 200 N. Also, let the block’s weight Wblock = 300N and
the angle  = 30. The wire can withstand a maximum tension of 500N.
(a) What is the maximum possible distance d before the wire breaks?
Solution:
1. Let's make a free-body diagram showing all forces exerted on the bar.
2. Let's choose the origin of the coordinate system at hinge position. It will help
us to simplify the net torque equation.
3. Now, we can write the set of three equations:
∑ 0, = 0 (1)
∑ 0, = 0 (2)
∑ 0, ∙ ∙ /2 = 0 (3)

If :
∙ /
From Eq. (3)  = 1.5 m
(b) With the block placed at this maximum d, what is the magnitude of the force on the bare from the hinge?
Solution:
From Eq. (1), part (a)  = 500·cos30° = 433 N
From Eq. (2), part (a)  , = 300 + 200  500·sin30° = 250 N
So, = √433 250 = 500 N

SP2: Two blocks of masses m1 = 2 kg and m2 = 3 kg, made of the

same material and resting on a frictionless horizontal surface are
connected by a spring of spring constant k = 120 N/m.
(a) If a force of 15 N is applied to the 3 kg block, by how much will
the spring be stretched?
Solution:
For mass m1: , | | (1)
For mass m2: , | | (2)
By adding (1) to (2) we get  (3)
By substituting a in (1) with (3), and | | with ∆ , and by solving for ∆ , we get ∆ ∙ = 0.05 m = 5 cm

The block-spring system then encounters a rough horizontal patch with coefficient of kinetic friction, k.
(b) If the same force F is applied and the block-spring system slides along the patch with constant speed, what is
the coefficient of kinetic friction, k, between blocks and the patch?
Solution:
For mass m1: , , 0 (1)
For mass m2: , , 0 (2)
From (1) and (2)  , , 0 or
 = 0.31

Alternate Solution:
First, prove that the amount of stretch of the spring, ∆ , in both part (a) and part (b) is the same.

Then, from (1)  = 0.31
