Safety Instructions

Safety Instructions
Before using the CPOL, carefully read the following safety instructions. It is not
recommended that the CPOL be used without understanding the information in
this manual. If some points of the safety instructions are unclear, please contact
OMICRON electronics.

Principle Use According to Regulations

• The CPOL should only be used in a safe manner, mindful of the dangers
while paying attention to the reference manual, and when it is in a technically
sound condition and when its use is in accordance with the regulations. In
particular, avoid disruptions that could in turn affect safety.
• The CPOL is exclusively intended for the application field specified in
”Designated Use” on page Polarity Checker CPOL-4, section 2.
Any other use is deemed not to be according to the regulations. The
manufacturer/distributor is not liable for damage resulting from improper
usage. The user alone assumes all responsibility and risk.
• Following the instructions provided in this manual is also considered part of
being in accordance with the regulations.
• Do not open the CPOL housing.
• Opening the CPOL invalidates all warranty claims.
• If the CPC 100 does not seem to function properly, do not use it anymore.
Please call the OMICRON hotline.
• Use the CPOL in conjunction with original OMICRON equipment only.

Operator Qualifications and Primary Responsibilities

• Testing with the CPOL should only be carried out by authorized and qualified
personnel. Clearly establish the responsibilities!

Safe Operation
• Voltage with reference to earth must not exceed 300Vrms on either
measuring probe of the CPOL.
• Never operate the CPOL with an open battery compartment. A life-
hazardous voltage level may occur in the battery compartment if the CPOL’s
probes touch a test point with high voltage potential !

Polarity Checker CPOL

Polarity Checker CPOL

Designated Use
The portable and easy-to-use polarity checker CPOL is designated to check a
series of test points for correct polarity.
Any use of the CPOL but the one mentioned above is considered improper use,
and will not only invalidate all customer warranty claims but also exempt the
manufacturer from its liability for repair or exchange.

Danger to life:
Voltage with reference to earth must not exceed 300Vrms on either measuring
probe of the CPOL.

Function
In order to check a series of test points for correct polarity, the OMICRON test
set injects a special polarity test signal at a certain location. This signal can
either be a voltage or a current signal, and has a signal characteristic similar to
a saw-tooth signal with a different steepness for the rising and the falling slope.
The OMICRON test set can be a CMC or a CPC 100 test set and is controlled
by the respective software, the CPC 100 or the Test Universe software.

Polarity Checker CPOL

☺ If the CPOL detects the same signal characteristic at a test point, it considers
the polarity as OK, and lights up the green LED.
If the signal characteristic is inverted or distorted, the CPOL considers the
polarity not OK, and lights up the red LED.

☺+ If the CPOL detects a signal that is too low, both LEDs light up at the same time.
Remedy: increase the signal magnitude.
Note: If you detect a wrong polarity in the current path, turn off the OMICRON
test set first. Only then disconnect the terminals.

If you are in doubt whether your measurement is correct, you can confirm it by
reversing the probes of the CPOL. In that case, the other LED should light up.

The CPOL in Conjunction with Software

The CPOL hardware cannot be used without a software. Depending on the used
test set, this is either the CPC 100 or the Test Universe software.
To learn how to use CPOL in conjunction with the respective software, please
refer to the CPC 100 user (or reference) manual or to the Test Universe online
help item "Polarity Checker".

The Batteries of the CPOL

The Batteries of the CPOL

☺+ If the capacity of CPOL’s battery gets low, the LEDs start flashing. As long as
flashing the LEDs are flashing, the CPOL’s batteries provide sufficient power to continue
working. However, the batteries should be changed as soon as possible.
Never operate the CPOL with an open battery compartment. A life-hazardous
voltage level may occur in the battery compartment if the CPOL’s probes touch
a test point with high voltage potential !

Changing the CPOL Batteries

1. Open the cover of CPOL’s
battery compartment using a
screwdriver.

2. Remove the old batteries

and dispose of properly.

3. Insert the two lower batteries first (next to the covers’ "—" symbol), and push
them all the way in. Make sure you insert them with the "plus" pole going in
first, the "minus" pole pointing towards the compartment’s open cover.

Then insert the two upper batteries (next to the covers’s "+" symbol), and
push them all the way in. Make sure you insert them with the "minus" pole
going in first, the "plus" pole pointing towards the compartment’s open cover.
4. Close the battery compartment’s cover tightly until it snaps into position.
5. Press CPOL’s ON push-button. Both polarity LEDs ☺ + should light up
steadily, and the red LED above the product designation CPOL flashes
shortly.
