M3 STUART (ABILITIES)

The M3 Stuart was popular


among its crews for its speed and
maneuverability, but was soon
outclassed by German tanks.
However, it was much more
successful in the Pacific theater,
where its small size and light
weight proved to be an advantage
in negotiating narrow jungle
trails.
The 37mm gun of the Stuart
was able to fire the M2 canister
round, which proved extremely
valuable against the Japanese
in the Pacific. It was used
extensively for breaking up
massed infantry attacks and
clearing dense jungle.

Although it did not move as


fast as a StuG III, the special
ammunition used by the sIG
33b made it invaluable in urban
settings.
These special demolition rounds,
known as Stielgranate 42, were
high explosive shells designed
to bring down an entire building
with one or two well-placed
shots.

Built on a StuG III chassis, the


sIG 33b was heavily armored,
fully enclosed, and mounted a
150 mm howitzer. Developed
for urban combat in Stalingrad,
only about two dozen were
manufactured. Half saw combat
in Stalingrad; the remainder
were assigned to the relief of
the Germans trapped there. The
last operational sIG 33b was
assigned to the 23rd Panzer
Division; it was destroyed in
October 1943.
