What is Data Mining?

Sophisticated algorithms indulge mediocre while technology arises in some point
of existing virtual engagement. However, while it is true that sophistications polish a
technologically advanced society, there are still more to gather and improve. In due time,
remnants from the past activities, interactions, communications, or transactions in and
out the information superhighways will be consolidated as new source of inkling. Not as
concrete as what it seems, but a glimpse of it can be a weapon of change.

The world is transitioning from primitive to extraordinary kind of living and yet
knowledge hasn’t reach its full potential nor end. That reflects the idea of creating a
collection of facts, series of information and detailed category of records. People
nowadays, rely on computerize work. We do job especially paper works in computers.
Searching almost every thing in the internet. However, due to the process of excessive
information, leakage might bring destructive demand of peoples’ security and privacy.
Communication exists in everyday life activities and everything we input lies inside the
world of internet. In the same manner, interaction exists from time to time.

Business companies use automated data savings on daily basis. Their past sales
saved in the computer storage and somehow backed up on a yearly routine. This will add
to the constant collection of data that can be used in the future needs. Internet of things
or IoT can be a great help in storing data. This technology is a trend to every modern
institution. More of that, schools adapt change to in line themselves in the current world
development. Information and Communication Technology as one of the major inputs for
change and easy way of productive life. Researches of graduate or undergraduate
students may sometimes rely in data collection for study purposes and for analysis. This
will give them a conclusion that might contribute in world knowledge. And for some
reason, a small say can be a great of help. The next generations might somehow indeed
a constant beneficiary in producing them a quality, competitive and productive future.

“We are living in the information age.” quoted from Morgan Kauffman book a
popular saying emphasizing information. However, it is in the data age where we live. The
information consists of data poured to our computer networks and some various data
storage devices every day from different institution or businesses, society, science and
engineering, medicine, and almost every other aspect of daily life. Combining all data
from physical devices and cloud storage may seem to be a place where everyone is “who”
and anybody can be “where”. Pointing the significance of each saved data may be helpful
for a goal of determining certain problems especially in records or information which goes
from data mining to data analysis. Data mining transforms large collection of data into
knowledge. Which viewed as a result of natural evolution of information technology.

a. Data mining is not hype. Instead, the need for data mining has arisen due
to the wide availability of huge amounts of data and the imminent need for turning such
data into useful information and knowledge. Thus, data mining can be viewed as the result
of the natural evolution of information technology.
b. No. Data mining is more than a simple transformation of technology
developed from databases, statistics, and machine learning. Its involves integration rather
than a simple transformation of techniques from multiple disciplines such as database
technology, statistics, machine learning, high-performance computing, pattern
recognition, neural networks, data visualization, information retrieval, image and signal
processing, and spatial data analysis.

What is Data Mining?

c. Database technology began with the development of data collection and

database creation mechanisms that led to the development of effective mechanisms for
data management including data storage and retrieval, and query and transaction
processing. The large number of database systems offering query and transaction
processing eventually and naturally led to the need for data analysis and understanding.
Hence, datamining began its development out of this necessity.

d. The steps involved in data mining when viewed as a process of knowledge

discovery are as follows:
1. Data cleaning – for removing noise and inconsistent data.
2. Data integration – for combining multiple data sources.
3. Data selection – retrieval of data.
4. Data transformation – consolidates forms appropriates for mining.
5. Data mining – intelligent methods used to extract data patterns.
6. Pattern evolution – identify truly interesting patterns representing knowledge
based on interesting measures.
7. Knowledge presentation – presentation techniques are used.

This represents that data mining in general is just part of the whole data
process. It can also be viewed as or referred to as entire knowledge discovery process.
Therefore, we adopt a broad view of data mining functionality as the process of
discovering interesting patterns and knowledge from large amounts of data from different
sources like database, data warehouse, the Web, other information repositories, or even
data that are streamed into the system dynamically. The processes are considered and
define.
