Report on training the farmers about safe use of chemical

BAYER SAFE USE AMBASSADOR is a program launched by
Bayer, to train the student in one day workshop in their respective
universities about the safe use of chemical. The train student are then
provided with personal protective equipment kits to train their village
farmers.I am one of them to deliver their message to my village Kota
Swat kpk. Our village is most famous for peach ,Apricot , tomatoes
and other vegetables.As fruit and vegetable need more pesticides so
there are high risks to the former regarding their health.
The main objective of the training was to provide information to the
farmers
 About the basic of pesticides
 The meaning of information such as precautionary statements
about human health hazards, and where
this information can be found in pesticide product labeling.
 Hazards of pesticides, including acute and chronic effects,
delayed effects, and sensitization.
 Routes by which pesticides can enter the body.
 Signs and symptoms of overexposure.
 Personal hygiene
 Using of PPE while dealing with pesticides
 Emergency first aid for pesticide overexposure
 Routine decontamination procedures, such as the need to
thoroughly shower with soap and warm water after an exposure
period
 Need for, limitations, appropriate use, proper storage, and
sanitation, of any required personal protective equipment.
 Safety requirements and procedures, including engineering
controls (such as enclosed cabs and closed systems) for
handling, transporting, storing, and disposing of pesticides
 Environmental concerns such as drift, runoff, and wildlife
hazards.
 Warnings about taking pesticides or pesticide containers home.
  That each trained farmer must train another farmer and that
trained farmer must another farmer and so on, so that this
message spread across the village.

First of all in the village kota, we discussed our message with

the leader of the village and then we arranged farmers gathering
consisting of 32 to 35 farmers (one farmer from each
family).we gave detailed lecture on pesticides their negative
effects on health and how to be safe when dealing pesticides. we
also demonstrated them how to spray and what PPE you should
be used and why it should be used. From views of the formers it
was concluded that Bayer was the first to explore the side
effects of pesticides to the farmer of this village. farmers were
convinced and some of them help us in our other training trips.
we also visited 20 to 25 different fields and trained the farmers
about the safe use of pesticides.
During visits we met with farmers who even did not know
about using of gloves mask and goggles .after detailed
conversation they were somehow convinced but still they need
more consideration.
we are also found farmers who were restricted to their ancestors
rules of spraying . it was the most difficult task to convince
them .
we met with farmers who were sowing green pea seeds with out
covering theirs hands. After showing them that these seeds were
treated with chemicals. We gave them our gloves for sowing
seeds. Others pesticide side effects and their safe use
informations was also given.

During visits we reached a field where use packet bottles 19 near

water channel I collected these used chemical packets and bottles
were lying near water channel. I collected these used packets and
bottles and showed to farmer the disposing of it by washing three
times and by burying in the ground .other information regarding
pesticides were also given. such useful information about safe use of
pesticides were given to farmers.we went to their home as well to
convey our message to them. Our farmers are regularly visiting
mosques and they give respect to the Islamic scholar of the mosque,
so we delivered our message to Islamic scholar of the mosques and
then he gave a detailed lecture on safe use of chemical to the farmer
after offering the prayer.
we visited different schools principal because most of farmer
children are studying in the school and we discussed with principal
about the need and importance of using personal protective
equipment, manual guides for dealing pesticide was also given in the
school .students were trained and principal really appreciated our
effort and promise to spread this message further. we also created
Face book page (BAYER SAFE USE OF PESTICIDES SWAT) for
bringing awareness in people about safe use of chemical, to answer
questions regarding side effects of pesticides and to spread the
message across the globe.
I had also trained my sister and then she visited farmer home to train
their wives ,daughters and sister, due to cultural concerns we cannot
take photos of women and cannot make videos of them. So we did not
mentioned them in our video .
We have trained more than 150 farmers in our village and online
registered farmers are more than 65 .
Personally I was really attracted by seminar in university since I took
safe used Ambassador program is one of my ambition of my life and I
will carry on this through my entire life I have planned to discuss this
message with our government authorities like state commissioner
member of national and provincial assembly to take bold steps for the
health and prosperity of the farmers
