Weekly workbook (part two)

10/25-10/29

1. Place the listed events in the correct order on the timeline (below) The dates on the
timeline are just there for support; you do not need to add any. You just need to
demonstrate you understand the order of events.

A sample is done for you (also shown on the timeline.)

! Sample event: Humans reach Chile in South America.

Put the following events in the correct order on your timeline:

! Humans in Southwest Asia learn how to plant the seeds of wild grasses; marks the New Stone
Age for some populations in the world.

! The domestication of plants and later animals is developed by many human populations.
! Humans learn how to control fire
! Humans learn how to build tools out of stone; marks the Old Stone Age.
! Humans begin to migrate out of East Africa into colder latitudinal regions.
! “Google” is invented

Domestication
of plants and animals is developed
by many human populations.
Please use your answers from the timeline for question 2.
2. How does this timeline show people are becoming more advanced? Use specific detail to support
your answer.
(Answers will vary.) Sample Answer: The timeline shows the advancement of humans, as you can see from
the data how humans are building off previous discoveries in order to make life easier and to improve the quality
of living, which are two indications of “advancement” (as we discussed in class.) An example that illustrates
this is how humans learn to plant wild grasses and later build off that knowledge to select the best seeds, a
process known as domestication of plants.
3. Approximately what year do you
see a huge population increase?
_1500AD. ________________

4. Predict what the cause for this

population increase could be:
(Answers may vary) Possible
Answers:
-Advances in Medicine
-New Agricultural Technologies
-Organized Governments

The following questions pertain to Chapter One, section Three in our Ancient World textbook, pages
24-25.
3(a)What is irrigation? Moving water from one
place (a fresh water source) to another.

3(b) How would irrigation improve farming AND

how could it benefit communities? It would
improve farming by supplying crops with water
to foster their growth. It would benefit commun-
ities that may not be as nearby a water source.
Therefore, they don't need to compete for land as
much in order to get water.

3(c) How does the picture show irrigation?

The picture shows irrigation because you can tell
the person is using a tool to work on building a
canal that is supplying water to crops; from the
picture, one can tell there are green plants, or crops,
in the background, the location where the canal
is opening up to.

What is a food surplus? How does food surplus

lead to a growing population?
A food surplus is when you have more food than
what you need. This could lead to a growing
population, since if you have more food, you can
feed more people. This allows bigger family sizes.
4. Characteristics of civilizations

Characteristic Details
1. Developed Cities

2. Organized • Advancements with technology (irrigation

Government system)
and a growing population resulted in a need for
an
organized government.
• Taxes were created to finance building
structures such as temples and palaces.

3. Formalized • Having a surplus of food allowed more leisure

Religion time for people to develop spiritual lives and to
worship.
• Priests had a lot of power; religion was often
closesly tied to the Government.
• Sacrifices (gifts) were given to please the Gods.

4. Specialization of Labor • As cities became more complex, different types

of occupations were a result.
• Irrigation systems made cities more complex.

5. Social Classes • Social classes developed as a result of the

increase of a division of labor.
• Having an organized government and religion
led to people being ranked according to social
statuses.

6. Record Keeping • Started out as keeping records of good

and Writing production and trade.
• Over time, developed into a more complex
writing system; more abstract concepts.

7. The Arts • Leisure time allowed people to spend more time

on creativity and self expression.
• Art reflected hero's, gods and goddesses, and
often times new inventions (i.e. bronze.)

6(a)Based on what you know about what places need to have in order for cities to grow, circle
locations you think might be good for people to settle. Label each location.
(Answers will vary.)

6(b) Look at the locations that you circled: Identify and Explain what physical features are nearby that
would lead to the growth of cities
LOCATION 1: I chose this location because it is near a river; a river is a fresh water source that
would be a quality source that supports life and trade. It would also allow the building of an
irrigation system.

LOCATION 2: I chose this location because it is located near the foothills of a mountain range;
this might allow snow that has melted in the higher altitudes to run off the mountain slops
and fertilize the topsoil nearby.

LOCATION 3: I chose this location because it is near a water source; this might also be a good
spot because it could develop into a trich rading center where people from nearby regions could
sea travel to.
