1. (a) Enumerate the different channel assignment strategies in cellular network. (6)

(b) Differentiate between soft and hard handoff techniques in mobile communication. (5)

(c) What are the concepts involved in improving the capacity of cellular system? (4)

(d) What is the significance of having a hexagonal shape of cellular structure? Give
reasons. (5)

2. (a) Write the evolution of mobile communication. (4)

(b) What are the various trends involved in cellular radio and personal communications? (3)

(c) Plot the spectral band of wireless, specify the frequency range for each and every
wireless applications. (5)

(d) What is the technique used to accommodate a large number of users in a limited
radio spectrum? Explain in detail. (8)

3. (a) Why do we use ERP instead of EIRP? Also say why dipole antennas are used
instead of isotropic antenna? (4)

(b) Find the Fraunhofer distance for an antenna with minimum dimension of one metre
and operating frequency of 950MHz. If antennas have unity gain, calculate the path
loss. (6)

(c) Illustrate Fresnel zones for different knife-edge diffraction scenarios. (5)

(d) Define scattering. What is its effect in cellular communication? (5)

4. (a) Calculate the Brewster angle, θ B for a wave impinging on poor ground, having a

permittivity of ε r = 5 at the frequency of 120MHz. Also calculate the same for typical

ground with permittivity of ε r = 15. (7)

(b) Log-normal distribution describes the random shadowing effect with same T-R
separation. Develop a scenario to describe the above. (7)

(c) Time dispersion due to multipath causes the transmitted signal to undergo either flat
or frequency selective fading. Justify the statement. (6)

5. (a) Estimate the power spectral density of MSK signals comparing it with QPSK and
OQPSK signals. Give explanations. (6)

(b) Derive the bit error probability for GMSK signal. (8)

(c) Illustrate the modulation technique, used in slow-flat fading channels. (6)

6. (a) Write about the modulation performance in fading and multipath channels. (4)

(b) Give the block diagram for coherent detection of FSK signal. (4)

(c) Derive the channel bandwidth of a coherent and non coherent M-ary FSK signal.
Also give its significance. (6)

(d) Find the 3-dB bandwidth for a Gaussian low pass filter used to produce 0.25 GMSK
with a channel data rate of Rb = 270Kbps. What is the 90% power bandwidth in the

RF channel? Specify the Gaussian filter parameter α . (6)

(c) What is the minimum mean square error for a DFE? Derive it. (6)

(c) Sketch the architecture to describe a Bluetooth network. What data rate does it

10. (a) In detail, elucidate the various types of forward channels used in IS-95. (4)

(b) Sketch the architecture of GPRS networks and describe its functions. (6)

(c) Compare and contrast the different generations of wireless standards. (6)

(d) 2.4GHz bandwidth spectrum is used by Bluetooth technology. Give the importance
of this spectrum. Do you suggest any other frequency band for Bluetooth? (4)
