Buqatha Ein Qenyah Majdal Shams
Map of Syrian villages and farms destroyed by Israel,
and the Israeli settlements built in their place,
in the Occupied Syrian Golan
Following Israel’s occupation of the Syrian Golan in 1967, approximately 130,000 native
Syrian inhabitants were forcibly transferred by the Israeli military or displaced by fighting,
from their homes and forbidden from returning. The Israeli military then began a wide-
spread campaign to demolish their homes, resulting in the destruction 340 villages and
farms and the town of Quneitra, considered to be the capital of the Syrian Golan. Israeli
settlements - considered illegal under international law - were then built over the destroyed
Syrian villages and farms, often using the same stones from the destroyed villages and
farms. Today, over 23,000 Israeli settlers live in 33 agricultural settlements and in the set-
tlement town of Katzrin – considered to be the ‘settlement capital’ of the Occupied Syrian
Golan.
Al-G'ager Masa'ada
The remaining Syrian population in the Occupied Syrian Golan is approximately 25,000
who live in five villages: Majdal Shams, Buqatha, Masa’ada, E’in Qenyah and Al G’ager.
Whilst the population of those forced to leave the Syrian Golan and their descendents is
more than 500,000, who mainly live in the surrounding areas of Damascus and the southern
Syrian city of Dara’a.
