Chapter 2

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter contains the literature and studies related to the impact of technological gadgets to the academic

performances of students.

Gadgets is designed to be more unusual and clever than other technologies. Gadgets are a kind of

technology that has specific functions and useful purposes. The use of modern gadgets are maximized in our

generation today. It is easier to finish gadgets-related works and people are able to work faster and with

efficiency. Noone can’t even imagine our life even without gadgets like cellphones, tablets, laptops and Ipods

(Tech Crates, 2012). Our gadgets today are used in every offices, classrooms, buildings, hospitals and in our

homes. Shy (2010) stated that gadgets did not only makes our life easier and faster but it also makes our life

luxurious. Indeed, gadgets really made a big difference in people’s lives and became a huge part of it.

Classrooms today are equipped with modern technologies that enhances student’s learnings Gammuac

(2013). But still, technologies are very controversial when it comes to school policies, but the Calgary Board of

Education actually encourages it as a learning tool of students. Queen’s University National Scholar and

Associate Professor Sidneyeve Matrix compared the happenings when calculators were first used in the

classrooms according to an interview with CTV. “We had a whole new level of computational skill, and now

we’re going to have a whole new level of mobile digital skills when we turn to mobile learnings on the

handhels.”

Teachers and students are a significant part of the trend today because technology owners are moving

towards being more modern. Lenovo, the world’s top PC vendor reported that they sold more smartphones and

tablets than PCs for the first time ever. Teachers and students are very popular with Calgary-based SMART

Technologies’ SMART Boards. Teachers can write, touch and interact with their contents and project

presentations into SMART Boards. A fun way for teachers to show creativity in dicussing topic is the use of

laptops being projected in a white board. Mp3 player is a common tool used for music wether a student is
listening to music while studying or a teacher assigned her students to download music. Mp3 is a useful for both

students and teachers at school (Gammuac, 2013)

In the 2000s on the impact of children’s intellectual development and various aspects of using such

technologies, a number of important studies and new media technologies were conducted. Many researchers

aimed to organize understanding the change that took place in using these technologies were also conducted. To

explore and discover the conversion in children’s behavior and focused to discover in what extent children feel

aggression and how they react by using these modern technologies; video games, mobile phones with different

applications embedded using via internet and Wi-Fi connections internet and video game consoles.

To improve the technology skills of teachers and students in both developed and developing world, one

must provide computers to school. Computer programs increase students’s attachment to academic works and

school activities, have positive effects of writing and improve students’ technology skills. Research in other

countries suggests that computer programs will be the most successful part of comprehensive initiatives that

makes changes in the curricula, assessment, teacher training and education goals. (Zucker & Light, 2009).

An analysis of technology effects found out that replacing teachers with computer-based projects

typically yield no learning benefits for at-risk students at school. Infact, blending leads to higher achievement

and learning gains (Darling-Hammond et. al., 2014). People are very frequent in using modern technologies and

media communication at work or at home and feels like hell when one has absence of technology and modern

communications as described by Gross (2009).

The learning practices of both individuals and organizations are designed, developed and test socio-

technical innovations that will be supported by the Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL). It is said to be an

application that generally covers technological gadgets that supports all forms of teaching and learning

activities. Since information retrieval (in connection to the searching of relevant studying resources to support

teachers or students) is an activity in TEL settings, as well as to highlight their particularities comparing to

recommender systems for other application domains (Koper et al., 2010).

One study was conducted to show the benefits of using Wiki technology.Wether Wiki technology would

improve students’ writing skills in college English as a foreign language writing class. Students were invited to

join a Wiki page wherein students would write 5 posts messages and then read and respond to the messages of

the other students. In using technology from participating in the study, reportet that their receiving immediate

feedback from the instructor was a great benefit to students. Students who participated in the study also

reported that their classmates’ works benefited them in learning vocabulary, sentence structure and spelling (Lin

& Yang, 2011).

Another study was conducted to increases students’ engagement and motivation was integrating and

peer-led discussions of literature. Wikis, online literature circles, and online book clubs are some technologies

used in these small groups of discussions of literature. Students were able to connect with readers from other

schools, states or even other countries with these kind of technologies. These kind of technologies is

motivational and an assessable way to expose students to ideas and cultures of other places or countries. Online

literature studies have the ability to create sense of community and foster positive social interactions (Coffey,

2012).

The use of technologies in academic performance greatly aided students in performing their school-

related activities. With utilizaton of mobile devices such as tablet, computer and laptops, the learning process

for the students became very fun and creative due to the user-interactivity and appealing visual presentation in

these kinds of learning tools (Clegg and Bailey, 2008). In additon to this, there are about 96, 000 educational

application available, and as a matter of fact, various collections of learning application exist for these mobile

devices (App Store Metrics, 2013). The subject areas covered by these applications, App in Education (2012),

includes Mathematics, Sciences, Grammar and Spelling and Arts and Humanities (Clegg & Bailey, 2008).

In the Philippines, President Benigno Aquino announced that the government officials are planning with

the use of tablet, computers in public schools in traditional textbook during the launch of the country’s K-12

curriculum (Enterprise Innovation, 2012). In addition to this, there are governments and non-government

organizations that aims to provide one laptop per student in a classroom. Students become more enganged and

involved in school-related activities with the presence of technological gadgets (Oquias, 2011).
Thomas and Cooper (2000) argued that college of education faculty should increase their use of

technology and provide their students with opportunities to use technology in instructions. Although, teacher

educators are using technologies with their university students and are not preparing preservice teachers to

integrate technology into instruction with K-12 students. Teacher educators preparing preservice teachers to

facilitate the use of technology by their K-12 students (Bolick et al., 2003).

The internet has proved its effectiveness in reaching out people around the globe. It has revolutionized

our way of communicating and conducting business within and outside our geographic boundaries. The internet

has become a necessity in the present age and computer have become mostly used in homes and part of daily

living for the Filipinos. Thanks to internet’ they can publish their contents online (Dennis Patino, 2014).

According to Useful for Life: ICT Computer Hardware Servicing, in the midst of the technological

advances, rapid industrialization and globalization, the DepED through K to 12 program provides an

opportunity for students to explore the field of composers. Filling up the knowledge of the students about the

use of technological gadgets such as smart phones, PCs, laptops that can help them improve their works in their

daily lives.

According to Computing for Life, at highschool level, you should have experienced the use of standard

school and office software, in order to prepare you for college or for employment after highschool. You must

learn to program computers since new programs give computers new usefulness. According to Developing

Useful Computers Application for Today’s World, technological gadgets contain useful and practical knowledge

and skills to allow the students to apply them in the real world.

Students will gain an academic gains by developing a proficiency in the use of computers as tools for

learning, productivity, creativity and entertainment. It aims to equip students with the computer skills and

knowledge needed to be competent individuals in the information age (D Whiz in Publication Management

2014).

Through gadgets, students will acquire the necessity problem skills and ideas in solving computing

problems related to electronics commerce. It also shows in accomplishing tasks. With the help of gadgets, the

presentation of the topics is done in a learner. It is also a way to allow the students to think ans do, hand-on
work instead of just reading the information. As a whole, it contains useful and practical knowledge and skills to

allow students to apply it by in the real world (Dennis Patina, 2008).
