Video editing with Windows MovieMaker

Work through a series of tasks to create a short video called “Cities and Biodiversity”. Watch the

All files used in this project have been released under creative commons licences. Download the files
for this project from the VLE and unzip to C:/user files.

Step 1: Import and trim video clips in MovieMaker


1. Open MovieMaker (Start > All Programs > Multimedia & Graphics > MovieMaker)
2. Click Add videos and Photos and locate cities_and_biodiversity_outlook_640x360.mp4 and
interview_kirstin_miller_640x360 (3).mp4 and click Open to import the files
into MovieMaker.
3. Select the cities_and_biodiversity clip in the timeline and click Edit and then
Trim tool
4. Use the play / pause button to pause the video clip just before the speaker
says “for the next 40 years” (around 44 seconds in)
5. Click on the Set start point button
6. Use the play / pause button to pause the video clip just after the speaker says
“…manage urbanisation in a more sustainable way” (around 1: 38)
7. Click on the Set end point button
8. Click the Save Trim button – you should notice that the clip becomes shorter in the timeline.
9. Select the second clip in the timeline (interview_kirsten_miller) and click Edit and Trim tool
10. Set the Start point to 95.50s and the End point to 134.22s and
then click Save Trim
11. Right click on the second clip in the timeline and choose Copy
and then right click in a blank space in the timeline and choose
Paste. You should now have two versions of the Kirtsen Miller
clip in the timeline.
12. Click on the final interview clip and choose Edit > Trim Tool
13. Set the End point to 316.27s and the Start point to 274.17s (you will need to do the end
point first) and then Save Trim
14. You can use the zoom in tool at the bottom right of the screen to
see your project timeline in more detail
15. Click on the final video clip and select Animations select a Transition to cover the jump
between the two video clips (you can click on the drop down button at the edge of the
Transitions window to see all available Transitions, choose the Crossfade transition within
the Dissolves section)

16. Set the transition Duration to 0.50

Step 2: Create a photomontage using images, captions, transitions,


animations & music
1. Click the Home tab and import the bus, crowd, skyline and aerial images into your project
2. Drag the new clips in the timeline so they are at the start of your project in the following
sequence: bus, crowd, skyline, aerial
3. Select the 2nd image in the sequence and click on Animations and select a Transition to
move from the 1st image to the 2nd image
4. Add Transitions between all the images and a “Blur through black” transition (within the
Dissolves section) between the final image and the opening video clip
5. Click on the first image and select a Pan and Zoom option (click the more button to see all
options)

6. You should notice icons have been placed on your clips in the timeline to indicate that they
have got a transition or pan and zoom effect applied to them

7. Select the first image and click Home > Caption. Enter the following text in the
text box;
 “For each new resident, rich countries add an average of 355 square
meters of built-up urban area.”
8. Format the text so it is large enough and uses a bold type face
9. Click Outline size and select Narrow and then change the Outline colour to black
10. Add the following captions to the next three images, ensuring the captions are
appropriately formatted;
 In 2005, cities occupied 2% of Earth’s surface, but the inhabitants used 75% of the
planet’s natural resources.
 In 1950 there were only 2 megacities with 10 million inhabitants or more. Today
there are 21 megacities.
 Urbanization is a major contributor to the loss of prime agricultural land.
11. Click on the Home tab, select Add music and locate the soundtrack.mp3 file
12. Drag the imported audio in the timeline so that it starts playing at the start of your project

13. Click the Options tab and move the playhead in the timeline (the black line that moves along
the timeline when the project is playing) to a couple of seconds into the first video clip and
click Set end point
14. Set Fade in and Fade out for the audio to medium

Step 3: Add opening title and closing credits


1. Move your playhead to the start of the project and select Home > Title
2. Enter Biodiversity and cities as the title of the video
3. Click on Format and choose an Effect for the title

4. Move your playhead to the end of the project and select Home > Credits
5. Enter your name and details of the video project into the text box.

Step 4: Save your project and export your completed video


1. Click on the MovieMaker tab in the top left of the screen and select Save Project.
Make sure you save your project in the same location as your source clips, images
and audio
2. Click on the MovieMaker tab and select Save Movie > Recommended for this project (there
are a number of other export settings that you can explore) and save the movie you are
going to export to your PC
