Journalism - is the activity of gathering, assessing, creating, and presenting news and information.

Functions

 Information Function - it covers all news regarding government politics, foreign affairs, weather,
accident, business, labour, education, however it does not include any information involving or
concerning the pursuit of leisure.
 Opinion function - In journalism people are not only informed, guided and entertained but they
all influenced to have their opinion on certain issues. In certain cases, the opinion of people is
diverted to another direction, sometimes, to negative and sometimes to positive direction.
 Education function – this educates people by providing guidance on various .issues through the
editorials and column.
 Laboratory Function - It serves as the teaching tool for budding journalists
 Documentation Function - Important school events and worthwhile student accomplishments
and achievements are recorded in the campus paper for posterity’s sake.
 Entertainment Function – Under this Function can be included all types of fiction like comic
strips stories amusing aspects of everyday life etc.
 Watchdog Function - The school paper serves as an eye for the readers to see what is
happening in the school and to guard the right of the young ones.
 Developmental Function - The developmental function of the campus paper doesn't only have
implications on the young one himself but also on the school as a whole.

Section/parts

 Local News - refers to coverage of events, by the news, in a local context that would not be an
interest of another locality, or otherwise be of national or international scope.
 Foreign News - it is a branch that deals with news either sent by foreign correspondents or news
agencies, or – more recently – information that is gathered or researched through distance
communication technologies, such as telephone, satellite TV or the internet.
 Dateline news - it indicates the city the journalist was in when he or she reported on the story.
 Weather news - helps people understand the world around them and make more informed
decisions for themselves.
 Index - an alphabetical list of names, subjects etc at the back of a book, with the numbers of
the pages where they can be found.

Other things:

 Nameplate - is its designed title as it appears on the front page or cover.


 Ears – is a space at the top of the front page on each side of the newspaper's nameplate.
 Banner - a large headline in a newspaper, etc, extending across the page, especially the front
page.
 Running head - is a short version of the paper title that is printed as a heading at the top of each
page.
 Headline - is the text indicating the nature of the article below it
 Deck - is old newspaper lingo for the short article summary that accompanies a headline. It
could be a phrase, a sentence or even two if they're very short
 News story - is a written or recorded (or, occasionally, live) article or interview that informs the
public about current events, concerns, or ideas.
 Lead - must convey essential information, set the tone and entice people to continue reading
 Column - is a recurring piece or article in a newspaper, magazine or other publication, where a
writer expresses their own opinion in few columns allotted to them by the newspaper
organization.
 Column rule - a rule usually of exact column length used between columns of a page or table.
 Fold - Above the fold is the upper half of the front page of a newspaper or tabloid where an
important news story or photograph is often located
 Byline - A line at the head of a newspaper or magazine article carrying the writer's name.
 Box - is a brief paragraph (occasionally there can be more than one) that summarizes the news
value of the story, sometimes bullet-pointed and/or set off in a box.
