Rizal’s Life, Works and Writings

1. To the Filipino Youth

This work is beaming with strong messages to convince readers, the


youth in particular, that they are the hope of the nation. He also stresses
the importance of education to one’s future.

2. To the Young Women of Malolos

The idea behind this letter sparked after he was impressed by the women
of Malolos who won the battle they fought. Rizal advises women to
educate themselves, protect their dignity and honor, and live with good
manners, setting up as a role model.

3. Kundiman

This piece reflects his high hopes that one day, the Philippines would be
free from treachery and injustice. At the time, the country faced great
threats while he was in Europe. And, through this work, he voices his
hopeful thoughts despite being far away from the country.

4. Noli Me Tángere

In this revolutionary book, pointed out the issues that the true citizens of
Philippines faced under Spanish rule and the need to take decisive action
to liberate themselves from oppression. His actions resonated well with
that of his countrymen and eventually the people decided to rise up and
defend their rights and freedom.

5. Sacrifice for Martyrdom

This is another factor wherein Rizal ultimately paid with his own life the
unfair tactics of factions who accused him falsely of belonging to
sectarian movements. He sacrificed his own life for the sake of our
country.

6. “The pen is mightier than the sword.”


Through his literary masterpieces, he voiced strong opposition to the
abuse of Spaniards and conveyed messages that he hoped would inspire
his fellow countrymen. We round up his best works and uncover the
underlying meaning behind them.

7. Junto Al Pasig

Its theme highlights the Christianity, good vs. evil, and paganism.
The Philippines’ national hero wrote it in honor of the Our Lady of Peace
and Voyage of the UST, and the play was staged on December 8, 1880.

8. El Filibusterismo

The novel also portrays the abuse, corruption, and discrimination of the
Spaniards towards Filipinos, it was also banned in the country at the time.
Just like what happens in our country right now.

9. Medical Doctor

Rizal was intelligent, charismatic, and loved by the people. Those are the
main characteristics of a true leader, that all of us must possessed them
all. This means that he could also make a great study on leadership styles.
He was a warrior without the need for war, and his fight against the
injustices committed against his country were both truthful and worthy.

10. Man and Woman

Rizal represents the Man and Woman who has ever lost their own lives to
the consequences of the very cause that they tried to go against.
Ultimately, it took a long time to get to where the Philippines finally got
their independence from Spain. Therefore, Rizal's influence over the
independence movement was both symbolic and necessary for this
significant and historic change to happen.
