INTRODUCTION

On the job training or OJT is one method by which students are given a

chance to apply the discussions they have learned in their respective schools within a

workplace suited for their chosen career. It helps the students to acquire relevant

knowledge and skills by performing in an actual work setting. Colleges and

universities require their students to undergo such training within a specific number of

hours as part of the curriculum.

For the students, an OJT or internship program provides opportunities to go

through the actual methodologies of a specific job using real tools, equipments and

documents. In effect, the workplace becomes a development venue for a student

trainee to learn more about his chosen field and practice what he has learned from

school.

On the other hand, an effective OJT program also benefits the companies who

accept trainees. First OJT or intern provides additional manpower for a less labor cost

than a regular employee. Most of them are all eager to learn the ropes so chances are

high that they will cooperate.

Employees can use this internship strategy as a method in recruiting new

employees. Since the trainer or the supervisor can follow the trainee’s progress, he

can gauge based on performance, behaviour and attitude if the trainee will make a

good recruit after the completion of his internship.

INTERNSHIP ACTIVITIES

Clarisse-joan B. Garma, a legal management student from BSLM-3A, had

completed a total of four hundred (400) hours of internship with Guzman Law Office

in RGT Bldg., Centro 10, Tuguegarao City, Cagayan from June 26, 2018 to October

12, 2018.

During the first day of her training, with her co-trainee, they were first

introduced to the head of office who is Atty. Raymund P. Guzman and also to the

other employees of the company. After that, they were given brief information on

how the office runs and what are the services they offer. On the first task they gave

her, she felt so nervous to commit mistakes because she was a newbie then and felt

afraid while having a conversation with her supervisor. But in that moment she

realized, she needed to prove that she is firm, flexible and versatile in any kind of

circumstances. As a result, she often showed them her best to make them amazed.

During her training days, she practiced myself to wake up early in the morning

just to be on-time and until now she was so proud of herself because she maintained

it. And in line with this, she always did accomplish the activities they wanted her to

do excellently. At first, they gave her light activities to handle in order for her to be

familiarized and be comfortable with the employees.

14
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus
Caritan Sur, Tuguegarao City

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

First week of her internship was her easiest week of training. Light activities

and works were given to her like entertaining clients while the employees are busy.

We had conversations with them and ask them what documents or papers they needed

like affidavits, special power of attorneys (SPA), deed of sales of motor vehicles,

lands, etc., transfer of titles and other documents. After asking them she forward it to

the employees to make it done as fast as they can while she continue talking to the

clients for them to not get bored while waiting for the documents. Her struggle here

before was some clients only give information or details of what happened and she

need to patch up those information they gave to come up with the documents they

need and being a newbie, she’s not yet informed on those problems so as what the

client informed her, she will also transfer the information to her supervisor and she’ll

explain to her what the client needs and tell the other employees to make or construct

it. But as time goes by, she also learned a lot until such time that even if she won’t

forward it to their supervisor and tell it directly to the employees to construct it.

She was also instructed to answer telephone calls. Here, her communication

and speaking skills were tested especially when the caller cannot speak native

languages and the medium of communication is English.

They also thought her how to use typewriters from the experienced workers in

the office for there are some documents that are already made and the only thing to do

is to fill up those blank spaces for the necessary things to be typed before notarizing

it. At first, she thought it was easy for being in the 20th century, they already know

15
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

how to use computers. As she tried to use it, it became more difficult to use and learn.

It has many twists and turns that computers do not have.

She was also tasked to receive forwarded communications like letters, special

orders (memorandums), court decisions, etc. But the challenge is she cannot sign the

receiving letter from the postman unless she check the documents inside the envelope

first thing if they are relative to the office or not especially when it is from the courts.

Even to the postman she also need to be polite at all times and act with respect and

kindness for sometimes the person who gives letters are not ordinary post men but the

sheriff from the Office of the Clerk of Court.

With her co-trainee, they were also tasked to docket the documents being

notarized. They instructed them how to do it and to whom ( the lawyer ) the

documents should be signed and sealed with for some documents are designated

which lawyer will sign the papers especially the cases that are raised to the different

branches of court. Documents being notarized needs to be docketed for court

purposes. Every documents being notarized have designated file number, page

number, book number and series to be easily located when documents are being

rechecked especially when the client lost his copy and needs another copy of it.

When they have spare time, they arranged or organized the cases in the

necessary shelf they need to be filed with. There is a different shelf for Civil Cases,

Criminal Cases, Ombudsman Cases, etc. They arrange them by the surnames of the

16
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

people being involved in the different cases to be located easily when needed. While

arranging those legal cases, their supervisor also let them read those cases for them to

be familiarized on how they are being processed in court. But the thing is they needed

to keep it confidential.

Every afternoon, before closing the office they needed to orderly file the light

documents being notarized through their docket number and give their updates to

their supervisor if there are problems or some documents being notarized are missing

and of course their daily learning in the office. They double checked the documents

every afternoon for them to easily file the documents per book (500 documents per

book) once it exceeds on it’s limit so they can start another book.

The following weeks became tougher, her supervisor started to teach her how

to construct light documents like affidavits of loss, support, death, legitimation,

ownership, etc. joint affidavit of two disinterested persons, contract of lease, deed of

sale of motor vehicle, and other light documents. At times or most of the time, her

supervisor gave the floor to her to check her abilities. As the client walked in, she

entertained him and having the information and analyzing what document he needs,

her supervisor let her construct it for the client and after she make it, she print it out

and her supervisor will review it to check if it has corrections and then let her docket

the case and pass it to the attorney in charge to notarize it.

17
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

Being done with the light documents, her supervisor started to let me handle

some hard cases under her advisory. With her age at around 52,, when she felt a bit

tired she would let her operate her seat and instruct her on what hard document she

will need to do. She experienced constructing documents needed for transfer of titles

(ownership), deed of sale of registered and unregistered lands, waiver of release and

quitclaim, desistance, and what she eager to learn the most were motion for

reconsiderations, petitions and position papers.

She also experienced being sent to different agencies like in the Regional Trial

Court (RTC) mainly to the Office of the Clerk of Court (OCC) to file petitions and

answers to different legal cases handled by their office, to Tuguegarao City Capitol

mainly to the Assessor’s Office to get different Tax Declarations. In Tuguegarao City

Hall where the head of office Atty. Raymund Guzman is to be found when he is not in

their office for he is also a government official of Tuguegarao. Going to Bureau of

Internal Revenue (BIR) for different business purpose and to different Banks along

Tuguegarao like Bank of Commerce, Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI), Banko De

Oro (BDO) and many more for different legal and business transactions and purposes.

She was also tasked to go to postal office to send different letters and documents.

As time goes by, the employees also permitted them to hear out different

confidential cases when there are clients going there and telling and filing cases like

annulment cases, murder, physical injury, road accidents, domestic violence and

18

many more. They let them express their impressions, ideas and some

recommendations about those problems in order to know if they learned something

from the different cases they have read from the shelves.

PERFORMANCE HIGHLIGHTS, EXPERIENCES

AND PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED

In entertaining clients, she learned that employees are needed to be friendly

and kind to all especially to the clients. It is one good factor to get the clients’ loyalty.

But at times, when there are too many clients especially at the office where she took

her internship (private law office), staffs are few and sometimes they cannot

accommodate all the clients at once especially during what they call “peak hours” like

9:00 in the morning until 3:00 in the afternoon. Some of the clients get bored while

waiting so as the clients get bored they should extend their patience and their moves

should be fast but prim and proper. The same with receiving forwarded

communications you should always move fast and act with respect.

While answering phone calls, she learned that patience, understanding and

politeness are highly needed especially when the client on the other line is impatient,

brat or has difficulty in anger management. They should listen well on what they are

trying to say so they can immediately respond to them. Mostly telephone callers are

from banks, hospitals, companies and other private businessmen. Most of them call

for they needed some of their documents to be notarized or some of their documents

are lost and needed some affidavits. Also transfer of titles for the properties they

acquired.

20
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus
Caritan Sur, Tuguegarao City

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

As to the use of typewriter, it has many twists and turns indeed that computers

nowadays do not have. The letters or buttons are needed to be pushed hardly to be

printed on the paper. They also need to be keen on typing because once they already

typed a letter they cannot delete it and it will make the documents untidy and

unprofessional to see. They also need to twist and turn the document up-side-down

and adjust the spacing before and after the line cautiously for it to be aligned. And as

she’s learning to use it, she felt like she travelled back in time to the years of her

grandparents especially her grandmother who is very expert in using typewriters for

being a government employee for more than 30 years. She realized the employees

hardships in typing documents way back time when there are no computers yet. Also,

she highly appreciate and respect them for employees at that time must be so

intelligent especially their vocabulary must be so wide for typewriters don’t have

autocorrect application, delete button, backspace button etc. She bow and hats down

for them.

As to constructing legal forms, case docketing and receiving forwarded

communications, she must be keen and sure with everything she do. She must do it

well and properly so it won’t waste time of the people involve because once she

constructed a legal form and some details are lacking or incorrect, clients will go back

and let it be change over and over again especially when the clients came from far

places therefore they need to go back to their office and pay for their ride once again

21
Republic of the Philippines

Andrews Campus

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

and also for the integrity of their office. If she do not do her job properly, it is not

only you who will suffer but the whole office as well.

Also in constructing legal documents, failures should not stop you from

doing what you love the most. At first, being a newbie she fail at times but her failures

didn’t brought down her spirit. It became her turning point to do better than what

she’s doing today. Until such time that her supervisor trusted and gave her confidence

to her that even without checking the document she constructed she just let her docket

it as soon as she printed it out and be notarized by the attorney in charge. She was too

happy back then that her supervisor trusted her abilities that much. Giving your best

performance lets you earn confidence and trust from your supervisor that tends to

give you the best result that you want and for her that is experiencing how to

construct petitions, position papers and other hard documents.

Being sent to different agencies and banks, she learned how to become

confident about herself. she gathered a lot of self-esteem. Before having the

internship, she was a very shy young lady and always afraid to talk to different

people. She was very timid back then but as she experienced this internship, her world

turned up-side-down and became colourful. Talking to different people with different

agencies are all new to her. For her, it’s a challenge that she have no choice but to

accept it. Going to different places that she have never been before and talking to

people she don’t even knew the faces before makes her heart race fast but at the same

time it excites her. Overcoming it, she became sociable and friendly to all people that

22
Republic of the Philippines
Cagayan State University
Andrews Campus
Caritan Sur, Tuguegarao City

College of Business, Entrepreneurship and Accountancy

she thought she would never be to. Until she enjoyed being sent to different places

already by her supervisor to experience and discover new things. She also learned that

in the real world, you cannot survive the world without any connections with different

people. If you’ll always be timid and shy, life will be harder for you. She also

experienced the hardships of passing petition to the Office of the Clerk of Court

(OCC), there was a time that she need to go back and forth from office and to the

OCC for some corrections of the petition before it was fully accepted. You should

review well the petition copies for you not to go back and forth especially when the

time is in the middle of the day or 12:00 for it was too hot and most of the time there

were no vehicles waiting at the gate of the Regional Trial Court (RTC) at those times

of the day.

Going to postal office gave her different experience also or should she most

probably say a privilege because not all youngsters nowadays experience going to

postal offices because we already have cellular phones. We can just text, call, chat or

videocall with them and eventually, every thing is already settled. She experienced

how to send letters to people for not instant but manually. It’s a great experience for

her. Just like learning how the use of typewriter is, sending letters through postal

offices also let her experience the olden time as well. It’s refreshing indeed.

Experiencing actual scenarios of complaints like murder, domestic violence,

etc., and not only viewed on televisions are unforgettable. She felt like she was

already one of those lawyers handling those different cases. It gave her more reasons

to give her best and pursue her dream to also become a lawyer.

REFLECTION ON THE INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE

Gruelling yet enjoyable. Enjoyable because she knew these are the works that

she may attain in the near future. And she hope it may come true.

As time went by, she learned to value intimacy and closed-knit relationship

with my co- trainee, supervisor and the other employees. Having a good relationship

with your co-workers makes your job easier and enjoyable. You also need to learn

how to adapt with the new environment. But adapting with the environment is not

enough. You should also adjust your mood, characteristics and traits with your co-

workers. She learned to handle her responsibilities and she also observed proper time

management and act with speed and urgency for she cannot able to accomplish her

tasks on time when she’ll just do it when she like. In the workplace you need to learn

to do your job as fast as you can.

Working to earn money and achieving and doing what you love and having

your dreams be in your hand is difficult. You need to pass many trials, and obstacles

before having it in your hands. In reality, especially in work, there are no such thing

as instant. You need to work hard, do your best and enjoy every moment.

Having and experiencing this internship is a great venture for her in achieving

her dreams in life. It gave her a lot of thoughts that she, must in order to fulfil it in the

near future. Knowledge is good to have but experiencing it is better. Real life

situations open up more ideas. That expanding of knowledge is not only within

the four corners of the classroom. Neither is it just within the vicinity of the school

nor can only achieve it by reading books or viewing it on televisions. Engaging on the

actual activity is the best way to learn and to deal with what is in the reality. What

they read on books, what they see on televisions, what their instructors or professors

told them are too perfect. In reality there are too many ups and down and twists and

turns to achieved every goal they want. Especially the money. One factor is financial

capability. Sometimes or most of the time it becomes an instrument for the employees

to lack professionalism that brings down not only themselves but the office or agency

they are working with as well.

she also learned to really act accordingly with her age. Childish personality is

not needed. She need to act as a true professional. She need to be modest, tidy, good

looking, always hold her heads-up and wear a smile everyday for it takes the bad

atmosphere away.

Now, She’s more equipped and ready to face and compete with the reality

after graduating her degree in college.

She will not forget her internship mostly the last day, which was on October

12, 2018. Yes, it was the day she ended her internship, but that was the day she

further significantly developed her personality and capabilities.

RECOMMENDATIONS

For herself:

She stated that having this internship as a requirement of their course, she

learned a lot and it helped her to become a good public servant in the near future. But,

she knew for herself that she still lack some things and needed more improvement.

She need to practice herself to be more vocal and to widen up more her english

vocabulary. She may know how to communicate through English language but she

should be more fluent. She should also learn to stand firm on her own knowledge and

not be affected to anybody as long as she knew that what she’s doing is good and

right but professional enough to be open for suggestions from others when she’s not

sure. Learning to be confident about abilities but humble enough to accept her failures

are also ways of loving and appreciating about herself.

For her agency:

She was very blessed and thankful for accepting and rectifying her flaws and

trusting her abilities. Inside this agency, all the employees are friendly and reliable.

They thought her so much things not only about work but also about life. They

welcomed her warmly and considered her as their family and friend. Being a newbie,

trainee and the youngest inside the office, they tried their best to cope up with her age

and so with her. She learned how to become more matured and professional because

of them. Seeing them deal with clients with confidence makes her excited and eager

to experience new things like what they do. They always guide her until the end of her

internship. And even her internship has already ended, they remained as her second

mothers and older brothers and sisters. Gaining new friends and having new

experiences is the best part of this internship aside from having more knowledge and

better skills. She knew to herself this is a perfect agency to learn things for they are

too hands on to their trainees. They made sure that before the internship of their

trainees end, they are well equipped with knowledge and experiences. The only thing

she can say is that for their office, she’s hoping that they will expand. Not because it’s

narrow and not fully equipped but for them to accommodate more people especially

clients and trainees. And as for their work, they should keep it up and accept more

trainees that will take their internship in their agency so they can help more students.

Her respect and gratitude will always remain.

For the future trainees:

Internship is not just a requirement for the course or curriculum for you to

fulfil. You should not take this internship for granted but seriously and of course

enjoy every bit of the moment as well. As for her, she also thought at first that it will

be boring for some of what she have heard from other trainees before was that you’ll

just be inside the office for the whole day, sitting and nothing to do. Some of her

classmates,

not to tell their names just randomly picked the agency they will render their

internship. They wanted the place where many students take their internship or what

they call the most famous agencies but as for her, having her characteristics before of

being timid and shy, she would better likely to choose the place that there are lesser

employees to interact with and lesser noise to hear so she chose a private law office

instead of government agency. Luckily, because of her characteristics she got the best

choice. She learned a lot about work and life. She gained friends and experienced new

things and gain as many knowledge as she can. She enjoyed her internship that much.

She realized that lesser employees, the more work or task will be given. You’ll not get

bored for you have many things to do. They let you interact with many clients, go to

different agencies to negotiate with and let you do the tasks what the employees really

doing there. They didn’t consider her as a trainee but as a true employee. They let her

do things as what I’ve said earlier, they scolded her when she didn’t do a good job

(they don’t take me lightly) and send me to different places to deal with the external

negotiations. Hoping that when you also experience internship, you’ll also scrap the

notion that “internship is boring” for internship is really enjoying and unforgettable

part of being a college student. Lastly, it helps you get ready for the nearing reality

about life and adulthood.

SUMMARY
I’m honoured being a student of Bachelor of Legal Management at Cagayan

State University – Andrews Campus. It opened up many great opportunities that I can

apply in my daily life and learned different laws that I can use in pursuing my degree

in Law in the near future. My internship might be short in time but it gave me so so

much learnings and skills from my hosting agency. My different law subjects gave me

knowledge for me to have advantage in taking up my degree in Law in the near

future. It makes me also confident to defend myself and others being discriminated

and being belittled by others for I know my every rights.
