Whole numbers
Whole numbers are numbers that do not need to
be represented with a frac on or decimal. Also,
whole numbers cannot be nega ve. In other
words, whole numbers are the coun ng numbers
and zero.

Examples of whole numbers:

4, 952, 0, 73

Integers
Integers are whole numbers and their opposites.
Therefore, integers can be nega ve.

Examples of integers:

12, 0, −9, −810


Ra onal numbers
Rational numbers are numbers that can be
expressed as a frac on of two integers.

Examples of ra onal numbers:

18
44, 0.12 , − , 36
5

Irra onal numbers


Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be
expressed as a frac on of two integers.

Examples of irra onal numbers:

−4π, 3

How are the types of number


related?
The following diagram shows that all whole
numbers are integers, and all integers are
ra onal numbers. Numbers that are not ra onal
are called irra onal.

If you were to take the diagram of


sets (circles) above and draw
another set to represent the real
numbers, it would encircle (and
therefore include) the two circles of
ra onal numbers and irra onal
numbers. Therefore, real numbers
are the set that includes everything
above.

That said, real numbers themselves


are part of a larger set/circle called
complex numbers, which (similar to
the "outlier" irra onal set in the
diagram) has an outlier set known
as the imaginary numbers. (These
aren't necessary to know un l later,
but I think it's kind of cool to get a
sense of the bigger picture as
you're learning.)

For lack of a diagram, here's a


rough sketch of a tree to see where
everything fits together:

Ra onal numbers can be expressed


precisely by any frac on. Irra onal
numbers can't ever be expressed
precisely by a frac on due to the
defini on that the decimal
precision of the number con nues
to infinity and the digits never form
a regular pa ern. If the decimals
ever terminated, the number could
be expressed by pu ng it over a
denominator rela ve to the scale of
the precision (eg. 4.57 = 457/100),
and a repea ng decimal can be
handled by expressing the rela on
of the number and a scalar of the
number as a system of equa ons
and solving for the arbitrary
variable. Eg. let N=1.234234234...,
then predictably 1000N =
1234.234234234..., and 1000N-N
= 1234-1, as the rest of the
decimals overlap exactly, then N =
1233/999.

I'm going to assume you are really


asking how 22/7 is classified.
Because 22/7 is a ra o of two
integers (with the second integer
nonzero), 22/7 is classified as
ra onal. This is true even though pi
is classified as irra onal.
You might be thinking "Wait a
minute! Pi is 22/7 so how can pi be
irra onal and 22/7 be ra onal?",
but remember that pi is not the
same as 22/7; 22/7 is only an
approxima on of pi.

so basicly ,
A real number that can NOT be
made by dividing two integers.
(Note: an integer has no frac ons.)
Its decimal goes on forever without
repea ng. Example: Pi is an
irra onal number (it can't be made
by dividing two integers) See:

They are numbers like pi, √2, etc.


When you express these numbers
in decimals, they never stop. These
are called irra onal numbers. Also,
infinity is also not termina ng.
(Technically, it's not a number. It's
just a statement that the number is
ge ng bigger.)

The only way a frac on can be an


integer is:
1) The denominator = 1 liked 5/1. It
simplifies into 5 because 5 divided
by 1 = 5.
2) The frac on simplifies into an
integer like 15/3 which reduced to
5.

Whole numbers are numbers which


are not FRACTIONS , DECIMALS
or NEGATIVES.
They are numbers from 1 to Infinity
and 0. [0, 1, 2, 3 ...]

While -5 is neither a FRACTION


nor a DECIMAL , it is s ll a
NEGATIVE for which it is not a
WHOLE number.

Nega ve Non-Frac onal,Non-


Decimal numbers are not whole
numbers.
Only Posi ve Non-Frac onal,Non-
Decimal numbers are whole
numbers including Zero.

Integers are the numbers which


include both WHOLE numbers and
their NEGATIVES (Non-
Frac onal,Non-Decimal Nega ves).
[... -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ...]
So -5 obviously falls under that
category.

Therefore,
-5 is an Integer , not a Whole
number !
