Boom Drift Reduction Valve

SMCS - 5059-010; 5059-017

Remove & Install Boom Drift Reduction Valve

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance,
testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools
And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in
Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Cap and plug
all connectors, lines, hoses and tubes to prevent the loss of oil and keep foreign material from entering
the system.

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the
pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick, bucket, and
swing), the travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the breather cap
before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Remove the filler plug only when the engine is stopped and the filler
plug is cool enough to touch.

1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows:

a. Stop the engine.

b. Place the engine start switch key to the "ON" position without starting the engine.

c. Move the control levers for the fore boom, bucket, stick, and swing to all full stroke positions. Push
down on the front and rear of the stub boom pedal (the first pedal to left of the steering column)
several times. This will release any pressure that may be present in the pilot system.

d. Slowly move the travel pilot control pedal to "FORWARD" and "REVERSE" travel positions. This
will release any pressure in the travel circuit.

e. Slowly loosen and remove the breather cap on the hydraulic tank to release the hydraulic pressure.

f. Reinstall and tighten the breather cap on the hydraulic tank.

g. The pressure in the hydraulic system has now been released. Lines and components can now be
removed.

2. Put identification marks on hydraulic hose assemblies (3) for installation purposes. Disconnect hose
assemblies (3) from boom drift reduction valve (1). Plug the hoses and fittings to prevent the loss of
hydraulic oil and to keep dirt out of the hydraulic system.

3. Remove the four bolts from two half flanges (5). Remove the half flanges to disconnect hose
assembly (4) from boom drift reduction valve (1). Plug the hose and fitting to prevent the loss of
hydraulic oil and to keep dirt out of the hydraulic system.

4. Remove two bolts (6) that hold boom drift reduction valve (1) to pipe assembly (7). Remove boom
drift reduction valve (1) from pipe assembly (7). Plug the fitting to prevent the loss of hydraulic oil
and to keep dirt out of the hydraulic system.

NOTE: The following steps are for the installation of the boom drift reduction valve.

5. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in the hydraulic hoses and fittings that were
disconnected. If any of these seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement.

6. Install the boom drift reduction valve in the reverse order of removal.

7. Fill the hydraulic oil tank with oil to the correct level. Refer to the Operation & Maintenance
Manual for the correct filling procedure.

before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools
And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in

NOTE: Drain all fluids in a suitable container for storage or disposal.

1. Thoroughly clean the boom drift reduction valve before disassembly.

NOTE: Put identification on all fittings, cartridges, plugs and valves for assembly purposes.

2. Remove O-ring seals (1) and (2) from valve (3).

3. Identify the orientation of fittings (4) and (5) for assembly purposes. Remove fittings (4) and (5)
from valve (3). Remove the O-ring seals from the fittings.

4. Remove plugs (6) and (7) from valve (3). Remove the O-ring seals from the plugs.

5. Remove relief valve group (8) from valve (3). Remove cartridge group (9) from valve (3).

6. Remove check valve (10), spring guide (11), spring (12), O-ring seal (13), back-up ring (14) and O-
ring seal (15) from valve group (8).

7. Remove check valve (22), spring (19), O-ring seals (16), (18), (21) and back-up ring (17) from
cartridge group (9). Remove O-ring seal (20) from check valve (22).

NOTE: The following steps are for the assembly of the boom drift reduction valve.

8. Check the condition of all O-ring seals used in components that were disassembled from the boom
drift reduction valve. If any of these seals are damaged, use new parts for replacement.

9. Assemble the boom drift reduction valve in the reverse order of the disassembly.

NOTE: After the boom drift reduction valve is installed in the machine, it will have to be adjusted.
For the proper procedure see the topic "VA Boom Drift Reduction Valve Check And Adjustment" in
"Testing & Adjusting M318 Excavator Hydraulic System", SENR6261.
