Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres
within 55 km of Castlegar that would benefit from using their
Celgrow
  soil amendment. Pastures and hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a qualified professional per-
forming soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and
delivery costs of Celgrow soil amendment based on access with a
large truck/pup combination. Acreage should be able to accom-
modate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two major components of
Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping process
and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria
are a good source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible
for spreading and incorporating Celgrow into their soil.

 Spring Yard & Yardage 2019
The Slocan Valley Threads Guild’s annual Yard and Yard-
age sale will happen on Sunday, April 28 from 10 am to 2
pm. Come inside our schoolhouse off Highway 6 at Perry’s
Bridge Road to explore a treasure trove of fabric, notions,
patterns, yarn and craft supplies. Our members have been
collecting donations all year to offer at reasonable prices.

the work of members on display on the walls as you look
for bargains; we’ve had a productive winter at the Guild!
Outside the building, our yard becomes a garden centre
where you can find just the perennial or start you need
for your garden or home. Many books will be available to

Florence Zakordonski
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of
our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother
and great-great-grandmother, Florence Zakordonski who
passed away peacefully at Columbia View Lodge in Trail.
Florence was born in Glade, BC to Mike and
Lena Stoochnoff and was the youngest of four
children. At the age of 15, Florence worked
in Nelson at the McDonald Jam Factory,
where she bottled pop, and the 4X Bakery.
At age 17, Florence started working
at her uncle’s laundromat, which was
located at the Reno Motel, in Salmo.
It was there that she met her husband,
Basil. Shortly thereafter they bought
the Reno Motel and began sharing 65
wonderful years together.
Florence was well known for her cooking,
especially her Borscht, which was a
favorite for all who had the pleasure of
tasting it. She worked in many restaurants
in Salmo and worked at the Sheep Creek
Mine as a short order cook. Florence was a
loving, soft-spoken, compassionate person and
often stated “I love everyone.” This is what led her
to her career with the Nelson Home Support from 1992
until 1999 when she retired.
Florence travelled to California, Hawaii and across
Canada and in her early days enjoyed curling, square
dancing, golfing, playing music and bingo.
Later in life she became a member of the Old Time
Fiddlers and The West Kootenay Bluegrass Society. She
and Basil would spend many hours entertaining people
at countless events in many locations including senior
homes throughout the Kootenays.
Florence is survived by her four children Shirley (John)
Hudec, David (Theresa), Dwayne (Dena) and Sandi
(Tom) Oorthuis; her grandchildren David Jr, Celena
(Shane), Raycene (Tyler), Kaylee, Kyle, Brittany (Charles),
Sherri, Darcy, Mantis; and her great-grandchildren Jaxon,
Keegan, Madison, Shyanne, Lily, Bethany, Ruthie and
Paityn; and great-great-grandson Jackson.

will be used to support our Guild and the many classes we

beautiful singing brightened Mom’s days,

the nurses and care aids in the 200 wing
who took fabulous care of our mother
and treated her with love, respect and
dignity until she took her last breath.

Help Kootenay families
arm wrestle with cancer
Cancer is a taker. It wants everything from us – our
health, our confidence, our families. And it is relentless.
Statistics say one in three people arm wrestle with cancer,
but what about the other two people? Our job is to stand
in the gap. Fill the void with love, compassion and our
ability to GO when our friends can’t. This is what the 24
is all about.
A team of eight paddlers will set out on April 13 for
a paddleboard relay on Kootenay Lake in order to raise
money to help local families arm wrestling with cancer.
Team members, Dianna, Elaine, James, Jodee, Kristy,
Mo, Reta and Andras from the West Kootenay will
gather in Harrop to inspire their communities to not
let life pass them by, have fun and raise money through
micro-donations.
Where does the money go? Their goal is to offer a breath
of fresh air to families dealing with the wrecking ball of
cancer. It is a chance for them to feel ‘normal’ – even just
for a minute. Team Kootenay will give out donations in
$1,000 increments to families in need and how it’s used
is for the family to decide. This is not about research or
finding a cure, this does not go to a charity. This is cash,
in an envelope, put in the hands of folks who need it. It
could help pay the utility bills, or buy some groceries, or
maybe take the family away for a weekend to get a break
from the chaos.
About the Monster and Sea 24: The 24 started in the
early spring of 2015, when six people in Seattle, led by
Troy Nebeker, did a relay paddle for 24 hours to raise
some funds for families who were dealing with cancer.
Their goal was to stuff five envelopes with $1,000 each and
put those envelopes in the hands of people who were deal-
ing with cancer and could use some help at a really tough
time. Through generous donations and support, they blew
past their goal and raised over $7,000, helping seven fami-
lies in the process.
Since the first year, the Monster and Sea became a grass-
roots movement. By 2018, the event grew to 26 cities with
multiple teams across the US and Canada and after all was
said and done, as a collective group they raised $156,000.
This spring, on April 13/14 Team Kootenay will be
joined by more than 40 teams across the US, Canada and
the Cayman Islands. They will all gather together as a
community to paddle and say to cancer “You can’t take

Warm weather often gives rise to thoughts about spend-
ing time in the great outdoors. Decks can expand out-
door living spaces, making them popular home additions.
However, when it comes time to map out a deck building
plan, individuals may be unsure as to which deck mate-
rial will meet their needs. Wood and composite decks are
among the most popular choices today, and the popular-
ity of aluminum is growing steadily.
Wood
Wood is a versatile and attractive decking material. Some
people think that wood is too expensive and requires too
much maintenance. In fact, domestic softwoods can be
very cost-effective decking options. According to Remod-
eling Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” report, wood decks
retain considerable resale value.
In terms of maintenance, choosing a rot-resistant wood
can result in less maintenance. Durable woods include
cedar and redwood. Popular Mechanics says both species
contain tannins and oils that make them naturally resis-
tant to decay, rot and voracious insects. Periodic cleaning
and inspection/repairs will be needed, but wood can be
much more durable than people may think.
Composite
Composite decking and its close cousin, plastic lumber,
are some of the fastest-growing decking materials on the
market. Many products are made from polyethylene or
polyvinyl chloride. Some composites will be comprised of
recycled plastic and wood fibers to create a weather- and
stain-resistant material that doesn’t warp, rot or splinter.
Composite manufacturers continually experiment with
manufacturing processes to duplicate the look of natural
wood grain.
Homeowners are often drawn to composite decking
because such decks require little maintenance. These
decks do not need to be sanded, stained or refinished.
However, mold and mildew can grow in shady, damp
areas, so homeowners must realize that these products are
not completely maintenance-free.
Aluminum
Although aluminum decks are not seen that often, there
are reasons why this decking material is becoming more
popular. Power-coated aluminum does not need to be
replaced due to rotting, cracking or warped boards. Most
planks have interlocking edges that create gap-free, water-
tight decks. Aluminum also has the advantage of being a
very strong but lightweight material.
Some people may think that aluminum decks would
be hot underfoot, but the material actually stays cooler
in the sun because of its heat-dissipation properties. For
those who have green goals in mind, aluminum is totally
recyclable.
Various decking materials can meet the look, price
point and maintenance level homeowners desire. Take the
living space to last many years.
