ADIOS version 2.0.12

--------------------

------------
Introduction
------------

Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills (ADIOS) is an initial oil spill
response tool for emergency spill responders and contingency
planners to use on either a Macintosh or Windows-compatible
computer. The program looks the same on either type of computer.
ADIOS integrates a library of approximately one thousand oils with a
short-term oil fate and cleanup model to help you estimate the
amount of time that spilled oil will remain in the marine
environment, and to develop cleanup strategies.

ADIOS calculations combine real-time environmental data that you

enter yourself, such as wind speed, with carefully researched
chemical and physical property information in its oil library. The
program provides you with best-guess answers for selected spill
properties.

-------------------------------
How to Install ADIOS in Windows
-------------------------------

Earlier Versions

If you have an earlier release of ADIOS 2, please uninstall it before

installing this release.

In Windows XP/Vista/7:
Open 'Programs and Features' by clicking the 'Start' button, clicking
'Control Panel', clicking 'Programs', and then clicking 'Programs and
Features'. Select ADIOS2 in the list of programs and click 'Uninstall'.

In Windows 8:
Right-click in the screen's bottom-left corner and choose the 'Control
Panel' from the pop-up menu. Choose 'Uninstall a Program' from the
'Programs' category. Select ADIOS2 in the list of programs and click
'Uninstall'.

----------------------------------------
What You Need To Know Before Using ADIOS
----------------------------------------

Be careful when interpreting ADIOS's predictions, especially if your

spill involves:

- Very low or very high wind speeds or sea states

- Very large or very small spills
- Areas nearshore or areas with complicated current regimes

Emulsified Oil

It is also important to note that many oil weathering processes

depend on the extent of the oil's emulsification. Data for
emulsification are very scarce. If ADIOS2 results contradict observed
oil property changes, try modifying the emulsification constant.

Open Water Conditions

ADIOS assumes that oil spreads unhindered in open ocean conditions

due to winds, currents and gravity effects. Once the spread of the oil
is dominated by land boundaries or surface current shears, ADIOS's
answers may not be accurate. For fresh oil contained in booms, use
the contained release option.

Changing Oil Temperature

ADIOS assumes that the temperature of the oil remains unchanged at

the user-entered sea water temperature. If the temperature of the
oil changes due to solar radiation, sea-air interactions, or any other
process, ADIOS results may not be accurate.

Spatially Varying Winds

Many oil weathering processes are sensitive to wind speed. Be

careful when using observations and forecasts for locations other
than the spill site.

Long Term Predictions

ADIOS will make predictions for a maximum of five days. For periods
longer than this, other processes, such as biodegradation and photo-
oxidation are important. The program does not model these
processes.

------------
New Features
------------

The latest version of ADIOS contains several new options for

inputting and calculating the oil leak rate from the source of the spill.
The user may build and modify a custom library of specific oils in
addition to using the standard library. Many of the weathering
algorithms have been improved and new processes such as
sedimentation and airborne benzene concentration estimations have
been added. There are new user inputs that allow decisions on the
application of standard cleanup strategies such as skimming
(mechanical), in-situ burning, and chemical dispersion. ADIOS2 now
estimates the reliability of its output based on expected input
uncertainty.

Known Bugs
----------

LEAKING TANK

You must put the water level either completely above the hole or
completely below the hole. Water level values between the top and
bottom of the hole will give incorrect answers.

If you set the water level too high or the oil level too low, it is
possible that no oil will come out of the tank.If you have the
hydrostatic head higher on the outside than on the inside of the tank,
the model will predict (correctly) no oil flow out of the tank but you
may get incorrect answers when you hit the solve button.

CHEMICAL DISPERSION

If you start dispersant spray operations at the same hour as an

instantaneous release, you may get answers different from what you
expected. This is due the the fact that the instantaneous release is
treated by the program as a release over an hour while the
dispersant operation bases its calculation on the first model time step
in the hour. We recommend that you move the dispersant operation
to the hour after the instantaneous release.
