SERIES: N Series
MODELS AFFECTED: 580N Tier 4 , 580SN Tier 4 , 580SN WT Tier 4 , 590SN Tier 4
GROUP-SUBGROUP-DEFECT: 35 000
SUBJECT: HYDRAULICS MAKE A WHISTLING NOISE WHEN
BACKHOE FUNCTION IS OVER RELIEF AND/OR DURING
WORK CYCLES

DESCRIPTION

The size of the regulating orifice in the pressure reducing cartridge spool can be undersized on some manufactured
backhoe units between January 2013 and June 2014.

When the operator actuates the loader controls and / or the backhoe controls on units that have the pilot control
system or the loader clam system option, a high-pitched whistling noise can occur.
NOTE: The noise does not and will not affect the performance of the unit.

ACTION

PRODUCTION

The pressure reducing valve cartridge (part number 47761898) replaces the existing pressure reducing valve cartridge
(part number 85827997) in backhoe valve assemblies.
The pressure reducing valve cartridge (part number 47761897) replaces the existing pressure reducing valve cartridge
(part number 87739122) in all clam valve assemblies.

SERVICE

WARNING
Avoid injury!
Before you start any work on the unit:
• Park the unit on a hard, level surface.
• Apply the parking brake.
• Completely lower the attachments.
• Relieve all the hydraulic system pressure.
• Shut down the engine.
• Remove the ignition key.
• Secure the unit with wheel chocks.
• Turn the battery isolator switch to the OFF position.
Failure to comply could result in death or serious injury.

NOTICE: In an attempt to resolve the noise complaints, dealers received instructions to drill out the four pressure
inlet orifices in the cage of the cartridge. As a result, the noise is worse. Do not modify the pressure reducing valve
cartridge in any way.

Follow the service instructions below to replace:

1 EN
• The pressure reducing valve cartridge in the backhoe-valve assembly
• The pressure reducing valve cartridge in the clam-valve assembly
