CHAPTER-1

Introduction about website

Indian Railways (IR) is India's national railway system operated by the Ministry of Railways.

It manages the fourth-largest railway network in the world by size, with 121,407 kilometres

(75,439 mi) of total track over a 67,368-kilometre (41,861 mi) route. Forty nine percent of

the routes are electrified with 25 KV AC electric traction while thirty three percent of them

are double or multi-tracked.

IR runs more than 20,000 passenger trains daily, on both long-distance and suburban routes,

from 7,349 stations across India. The trains have a five-digit numbering system. Mail or

express trains, the most common types, run at an average speed of 50.6 kilometres per hour

(31.4 mph). In the freight segment, IR runs more than 9,200 trains daily. The average speed

of freight trains is around 24 kilometres per hour (15 mph).

As of March 2017, IR's rolling stock consisted of 277,987 freight wagons, 70,937 passenger

coaches and 11,452 locomotives. IR owns locomotive and coach-production facilities at

several locations in India. The world's eighth-largest employer, it had 1.308 million

employees as of March 2017.

In the year ending March 2018, IR carried 8.26 billion passengers and transported 1.16

billion tonnes of freight. In the fiscal year 2017-18, IR is projected to have revenue of ₹1.874

trillion (US$26 billion), consisting of ₹1.175 trillion (US$16 billion) in freight revenue and

₹501.25 billion (US$7.0 billion) in passenger revenue, with an operating ratio of 96.0

percent.

The first railway proposals for India were made in Madras in 1832. The country's first train,

Red Hill Railway (built by Arthur Cotton to transport granite for road-building), ran from

5
Red Hills to the Chintadripet bridge in Madras in 1837. In 1845, the Godavari Dam

Construction Railway was built by Cotton at Dowleswaram in Rajahmundry, to supply stone

for the construction of a dam over the Godavari River. In 1851, the Solani Aqueduct Railway

was built by Proby Cautley in Roorkee to transport construction materials for an aqueduct

over the Solani River.

India's first passenger train, hauled by three steam locomotives (Sahib, Sindh and Sultan), ran

for 34 kilometres (21 mi) with 400 people in 14 carriages on 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) broad

gauge track between Bori Bunder (Mumbai) and Thane on 16 April 1853.The Dapoorie

viaduct, India's first railway bridge, was built over the Ulhas River when the Mumbai-Thane

line was extended to Kalyan in May 1854.Eastern India's first passenger train ran 24 miles

(39 km) from Howrah, near Kolkata, to Hoogly on 15 August 1854. The first passenger train

in South India ran 60 miles (97 km) from Royapuram- Veyasarapady (Madras) to Wallajah

Road (Arcot) on 1 July 1856.

On 24 February 1873, a horse-drawn 3.8-kilometre (2.4 mi) tram opened in Calcutta between

Sealdah and Armenian Ghat Street. On 9 May 1874, a horse-drawn tramway began operation

in Bombay between Colaba and Parel. In 1897, lighting in passenger coaches was introduced

by many railway companies. On 3 February 1925, the first electric passenger train in India

ran between Victoria Terminus and Kurla.

The organisation of Indian railways into regional zones began in 1951,when the Southern (14

April 1951), Central (5 November 1951) and Western (5 November 1951) zones were

created. Fans and lights were mandated for all compartments in all passenger classes in 1951,

and sleeping accommodations were introduced in coaches. In 1956, the first fully air-

conditioned train was introduced between Howrah and Delhi. Ten years later, the first

6
containerized freight service began between Mumbai and Ahmedabad. In 1986, computerized

ticketing and reservations were introduced in New Delhi.

In 1988, the first Shatabdi Express was introduced between New Delhi and Jhansi; it was

later extended to Bhopal. Two years later, the first self-printing ticket machine (SPTM) was

introduced in New Delhi. In 1993, air-conditioned three-tier coaches and a sleeper class

(separate from second class) were introduced on IR. The CONCERT system of computerized

reservations was deployed in New Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai in September 1996. In 1998,

coupon validating machines (CVMs) were introduced at Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji

Maharaj Terminus. The nationwide Concierge system began operation on 18 April 1999. In

February 2000, the Indian Railways website went online. On 3 August 2002, IR began online

train reservations and ticketing. Indian Railways announced on 31 March 2017 that the

country's entire rail network would be electrified by 2022.

Problems in existing system

1. Its present railway network is overburdened and inadequate to meet the new challenges of

a fast developing economy.

2. Some regions are beyond the reach of railways due to unfavourable geographical

conditions. These areas need to be opened to railways for removing regional inequalities in

economic growth.

3. Railways are facing stiff competition from road transport and thus its share in passenger

and goods traffic is declining.

7
4. Railways are overburdened with surplus staff on its regular pay roles. This burden hinders

the further development of railways.

5. The railways have to develop uneconomic projects due to political pressures and

interferences.

6. Railways have huge outstanding payments to diesel and electric power supply companies.

7. The State Electricity Boards and NTPC increase the tariffs arbitrarily and thus adds to the

burden of railways.

8. Railways are the largest consumer of diesel. Any increase in the rates of diesel, adversely

affect the financial resources.

9. Most of the equipment used by the railways are now obsolete and need immediate

replacements.

10. There is mounting deficit due to non increase in fares and tariffs by the Government due

to political reasons.

Objectives of proposed system

Improved management of the flow of traffic through bottlenecks to minimise track

occupancy times. This will be addressed through improved timetabling techniques and

real-time traffic management.

To reduce overall delays through improved planning techniques that provide robust and

resilient timetables capable of coping with normal statistical variations in operations and

minor perturbations.

8
To reduce overall delays and thus service dependability through improved traffic

management techniques that can recover operations following minor perturbations as well

as major disturbances.

To improve the traffic flow throughout the entire system by providing effective, real-time

information to traffic controllers and drivers, thus enhancing system performance.

To provide customers of passenger and freight services with reliable and accurate

information that is updated as new traffic management decisions are taken, particularly in

the event of disruptions.

To improve and move towards the standardisation of the information provided to drivers

to allow improved real-time train management on international corridors and system

interoperability; whilst also increasing the energy efficiency of railway operations.

To better understand, manage and optimise the dependencies between train paths by

considering connections, turn-around, passenger transit, shunting, etc. in order to allocate

more appropriate recovery allowances, at the locations they are needed, during timetable

generation.

To provide a means of updating and notifying actors of changes to the timetable in a

manner and to timescales that allows them to use the information effectively.

9
Data collection

Primary data collection

Primary data is data that is collected by a researcher from first-hand sources, using methods

like surveys, interviews, or experiments. It is collected with the research project in mind,

directly from primary sources.

Secondary data collection

The Secondary data will be mainly collected from different books, magazines, Journals,

company’s Literature, Newspapers, Internet and from the company personnel.

As the data’s will be of various types such as comparing based on value as well as the relative

comparison, hence both the tools are to be use for the proper analysis of the data’s.

PROJECT PLANNING:

Project planning is part of project management, which relates to the use of schedules such as

Gantt charts to plan and subsequently report progress within the project environment.

Initially, the project scope is defined and the appropriate methods for completing the project

are determined. Following this step, the durations for the various tasks necessary to complete

the work are listed and grouped into a work breakdown structure. Project planning is often

used to organize different areas of a project, including project plans, work loads and the

management of teams and individuals. The logical dependencies between tasks are defined

using an activity network diagram that enables identification of the critical path. Project

planning is inherently uncertain as it must be done before the project is actually started.

Therefore the duration of the tasks is often estimated through a weighted average of

optimistic, normal, and pessimistic cases.

A Gantt chart is a horizontal bar chart developed as a production control tool in 1917 by

Henry L. Gantt, an American engineer and social scientist. Frequently used in project

management, a Gantt chart provides a graphical illustration of a schedule that helps to

plan, coordinate, and track specific tasks in a project.

CHAPTER-2

SYSTEM DESIGN:

System design is the process of defining the architecture, modules, interfaces, and data for a

system to satisfy specified requirements. Systems design could be seen as the application of

systems theory to product development. There is some overlap with the disciplines of systems

analysis, systems architecture and systems engineering.

Systems design services firms plan and design computer systems that integrate computer

hardware, software, and communications technologies. They help clients select the right

hardware and software products for a particular project, and then develop, install, and implement.

The term system is one that is universally used. A system is a purposeful set of interrelated

components that form an integrated whole and work together to achieve some objective.

Systems are usually hierarchical and so include other systems. These other systems are called

sub-systems. Some systems share common characteristics which may include behaviour,

structure.

ER DIAGRAM

An entity relationship diagram (ERD), also known as an entity relationship model, is a

graphical representation of an information system that depicts the relationships among

people, objects, places, concepts or events within that system. An ERD is a data modeling

Technique that can help define business processes and be used as the foundation for a

relational database.

14
BLOCK DIAGRAM:

A block diagram is a diagram of a system in which the principal parts or functions are

represented by blocks connected by lines that show the relationships of the blocks. They are

heavily used in engineering in hardware design, electronic design, software design, and

process flow diagrams.

Block diagrams are typically used for higher level, less detailed descriptions that are intended

to clarify overall concepts without concern for the details of implementation. Contrast this

with the schematic diagrams and layout diagrams used in electrical engineering, which show

the implementation details of electrical components and physical construction.

The physical design relates to the actual input and output processes of the system. This is

explained in terms of how data is input into a system, how it is verified/authenticated, how it

is processed, and how it is displayed. In physical design, the following requirements about

the system are decided.

1. Input requirement,

2. Output requirements,

Physical design, in this context, does not refer to the tangible physical design of an

information system. To use an analogy, a personal computer's physical design involves input

via a keyboard, processing within the CPU, and output via a monitor, printer, etc. It would

not concern the actual layout of the tangible hardware, which for a PC would be a monitor,

CPU, motherboard, hard drive, modems, video/graphics cards, USB slots, etc. It involves a

detailed design of a user and a product database structure processor and a control processor.

15

16
DATABASE DESIGN:

Database design is the organisation of data according to a database model. The designer

determines what data must be stored and how the data elements interrelate. With this

information, they can begin to fit the data to the database model.

Database design involves classifying data and identifying interrelationships. This

theoretical representation of the data is called an ontology. The ontology is the theory

behind the database's design. A table is a collection of related data held in a structured

format within a database. It consists of columns, and rows.

A Railway Reservation Sytem service is an online service,
platform, or site that focuses on building and reflecting
of social networks
or social relations among people, who, for example, share
interests and/or activities and
people with similar or somewhat similar interests, backgrounds
and/or activities make their
own communities. A social network service consists of a
representation of each user (often a profile),
his/her social links, and a variety of additional services. Most
social network services are web-based
and provide means for users to interact over the Internet, such as
e-mail and instant messaging. Online
community services are sometimes considered as a social network
service, though in a broader sense, social
network service usually means an individual-centered service
whereas online community services are group-centered.
Social networking sites allow users to share ideas, activities,
events, and interests within their individual
networks.
